Day 2 results and day 3 pairings

Hakuho's win streak stopped at 63 wins, just six wins short of matching the legendary 69 from Futabayama. The honour of stopping the streak deservedly goes to Kisenosato who gave a strong fight from the start, never letting Hakuho doing his own sumo. The win also was his third career kinboshi, and the first time Hakuho allowed a second kinboshi against the same rikishi. This was the fifth kinboshi given up from Hakuho who now is 130-5 against maegashira opponents as a yokozuna. For comparisons sake Asashoryu was 250-26 against maegashira in non-fusen bouts.

Baruto and Kakuryu now are the only undefeated sanyaku as Tochiozan and Kotooshu suffered first losses as well. Baruto escaped Aran with a harimanage win and Kaio slapped Kotoshogiku down with tsukiotoshi, but Harumafuji is in early difficulties at 0-2, losing to Tochinoshin. Several maegashira rikishi are doing surprisingly well with Aminishiki beating the second ozeki already and Tochinonada downing Goeido and Miyabiyama.

Takarafuji is off to a nice start in his second juryo basho, beating Hochiyama for his second win, while Brazilian Kaisei also is 2-0 in his third juryo basho (a 15-15 record moved him up from J12 to J6, not bad). Two of the four shin-deshi also are 2-0 with Takayasu and Akiseyama (former Fukao). 31 years old shin-sekitori Tsurugidake got his first loss at the hands of Daido while the youngest sekitori Masunoyama is down to 0-2. Masatsukasa won the juryo yusho with 13-2 just two basho ago but missed last basho with an injury - he seems to suffer still as he is 0-2 now. Kakizoe is plainly disappointing lately as he had a respectable 6-9 in the joi-jin in Hatsu followed by two 7-8. But the last two basho but were dismal 3-12 scores and now in juryo he is down to 0-2 with a loss to Tosanoumi today.

Got home to sit down and watch the sumo I had recorded, and my son, who doesn't even like sumo that much opened his big mouth and said, "you know what happens don't you?" When I gave him an incredulous "no." he tried to cover it up but it was too obvious what must have happened. It was still pretty exciting actually finally seeing it. Baruto's perseverance and actually turning the tables on Aran, someone even near his size, was a great highlight (especially since I already knew who was going to win the next bout...)

Kids, eh?:-)

Glad the run was ended by a good performance from a quality rikishi and not a cheap henka or anything like that. Congrats to Kisenosato; as Doitsuyama said he never let Hakuho dictate the match and that was the key to his victory. I wonder also if there was just a hint of complacency from Hakuho against an opponent who he'd beaten eleven times in a row.

Hakuhou looked very tense and robotic and even in a dazed Zombie-like state during his shikiris yesterday and today. If anyone has it recorded, watch how he goes to the salt veeeery slowly- not confident-slowly but apprehensive-slowly. At least, that is what I saw.

Yes, he lost his game mentally. And he's not yet a wooden rooster. But his father was. He hasn't learn from him good enough.

Watching the bout, Kisenosato played it perfectly. He got in on the left quickly, and refused to let Hakuho get his left in. He was tenacious, aggressive, and just did everything perfectly, which is what was needed.
