Guess Kisenosato's Aite

Recommended Posts

hmm. tricky, but fun. After reading the pro's thoughts in this game, rookie me has to change his mind.

And, as my plane just hit Fukuoka airport and I'd love to see a ketteisen live for the first time I go for

Day 15 Toyonoshima

apologies for switching again

yo kin shatta (Fukuoka dialekt greetings)

While everyone marches to their KK or better, so ends my most miserable of bashos. At least I don't have to sweat laboring over my final day pick. That being said, I really don't think they'll give Toyonoshima a shot at yusho without first going thru Hakuho. In March 2000 they forgot about the Musashimaru-Akebono yokozuna match-up to give Akebono a shot at yusho-leading M14 Takatoriki, so bypassing Hakuho-Kotooshu and matching Hak with Toyonoshima should not be a problem.

Of course every hunch I've had this time has proven incorrect, so one more will not be surprising. In any case:

Day 15 - I'll join the Tokusegawa mini-bandwagon.

Asashosakari, thanks for doing the special prizes.

Deadline has passed...Predictions by the yusho contenders:

Kotoviki (10-4): Toyonoshima

Asashosakari (10-4): Yoshikaze

Hidariashiyama (9-4-1): Toyonoshima

Oshirokita (9-3-2): Toyonoshima

XiaoTan (9-5): Toyonoshima

That's easy enough...with Toyonoshima it's Viki's yusho, with anybody else it's Asashosakari's. (I suppose I didn't need to agonize over Yoshikaze versus Tokusegawa after all...)

Sansho Panza preview...

Shukun-sho:

5 players had 5-day winning streaks early in the basho (Hidariashiyama, Kofuji, Kotoviki and Kuroimori to start, XiaoTan from Day 3-7), but Asashosakari has reeled off five straight wins just now - if Yoshikaze is correct for senshuraku, he takes the prize outright, otherwise it's a six-way share of the award.

Gino-sho:

XiaoTan earned 3 points by being the only one to get Tochiozan correct for Day 6. Oshirokita and Shimodahito (Asasekiryu Day 8) and Gernobono and Kotoviki (Homasho Day 9) have 2 points each. Today's rare picks: Yoshikaze by Asashosakari and Kameumi - neither has any points yet so this will not be enough to pass XiaoTan. And Tokusegawa by Gernobono, Jejima and Yaochoyama - Gernobono can score his 3rd point to take a share of the prize. If so, he can thank Andonishiki for changing his pick and making Tokusegawa points-eligible. (Yusho winner...)

I believe it is.

Not sure who's supposed to post the final standings in a "gyoji free-for-all" basho, so at the risk of a rijicho scolding I'll just go ahead:

Kisenosato's final opponent will be yusho contending Toyonoshima, providing a fitting finish to a rather successful basho for Kisenosato. (BTW, I'm curious how many of us will actually be rooting for Toyonoshima in that bout.) Exactly half of us got this correct, the other 9 went astray with Yoshikaze, Tokusegawa and Goeido. Final results:

Yaochoyama (Y1E 5-10) Y1

O1 Profomisakari (O1W 8-7)

Jakusotsu (S1E 9-6) S1 Gernobono (S1W 8-6-1)

Maguroyama (S2E 6-9) S2 Jejima (S2W 7-8)

Kotoviki (K1E 11-4) K1 Hidariashiyama (K1W 10-4-1)

Asashosakari (M1E 10-5) M1 Holleshoryu (M1W 7-8)

Kuroimori (M2E 8-6-1) M2 Chisaiyama (M2W 8-7)

Oshirokita (M3E 10-3-2) M3 XiaoTan (M3W 10-5)

Kofuji (M4E 7-7-1) M4 Kameumi (M4W 3-11-1)

Andonishiki (M5E 8-7) M5

Mae-zumo

Shimodahito (mz 7-6-2)

Kisenosato's aites: 1. O1W Baruto, 2. Y1E Hakuho, 3. O2E Harumafuji, 4. O2W Kaio, 5. O1E Kotooshu, 6. S1E Tochiozan, 7. S1W Kakuryu, 8. M2W Asasekiryu, 9. M3E Homasho, 10. K1E Aran, 11. K1W Tochinoshin, 12. M1W Kotoshogiku, 13. M2E Aminishiki, 14. M8E Tamawashi, 15. M9W Toyonoshima

Quickly summarizing the Kyushu 2010 Special Prizes again:

Shukun-sho: The prize for the longest winning streak goes to no less than six players this time who all achieved five straight wins. To wit: Hidariashiyama, Kofuji, Kotoviki, Kuroimori (all Day 1-5), XiaoTan (Day 3-7), Asashosakari (Day 10-14).

Kanto-sho: The prize for the shortest longest losing streak is awarded to Kotoviki for her four single losses. Based on Yaochoyama's note at last basho's prize announcement, I believe this is the very first time for a player to survive a basho without any consecutive loss days.

Gino-sho: Bonus points for successful rare picks can be earned towards this prize (3/2/1 points for being among 1/2/3 players with the correct pick), which goes to XiaoTan this basho. In a rather predictable basho rare picks were hard to come by (at least those who turned out correct!), and XiaoTan barely clears the minimum hurdle of 3 bonus points thanks to his unshared pick of Tochiozan on Day 6.

Congrats again to Kotoviki for her yusho! (Spooky TV program...) The jun-yusho is shared fourways between (in descending banzuke order) Hidariashiyama, Asashosakari, Oshirokita and XiaoTan.

Over to Jejima for announcing the KK and OQ lines, which may be of particular interest to our kadoban ozeki...

It's just totally ironic that the most exciting basho in, I can't remember how long, is being played out to a half-full stadium with only one or two sold out days so far! Whenever Kaio retires, they should drop the Kyushu basho entirely and give Osaka two or add a 4th for Tokyo as Fukuoka just can't be a money maker for the Kyokai, but that's fodder for another thread.

It just doesn't make sense not to give a potential Yusho winner a shot against the expected Yusho winner so I will go with:

Day 15: Goeido

I second your motion!!! I like adding another Tokyo basho myself (Spooky TV program...)

Thank you so much everybody!!! Really I am excited!!!! (Spooky TV program...) (Applauding...) (Applauding...) (Applauding...) (Clapping wildly...)

I was watching tv in my car at about 5:20 I guess. They were still saying "Toyonoshima will face either Kise or Giku" and I thought... when will they decide!???

When it finally came up I was so excited!!!

I really love this game, even when it is frustrating. And it is one thing that keeps me coming to the forum during a basho especially those except kyushu when I'm there every day and exhausted! I do better when I'm not at the basho, so maybe I should sit out January so I can do well in this game? haha!!!

And I'll reply first as to who I will be cheering for in this bout! I'd say 97% of the time I cheer Kise without hesitation. I NEVER ever will cheer against Baruto even for Kise and not before for Asashoryu either.

It was the one day I didn't cheer for Toyonoshima when he fought Baruto. However Toyonoshima is an actual friend and for Kise, we have only talked a few times casually. He has always been nice but I know he can't even remember my name.. whereas Toyo-chan never forgets me! Even when my elementary school students go to him and say "Viki is my teacher" he always gives them a nice autograph and picture and later gives me tegata for them. So no matter how cute Kise is of course I will cheer for Toyo-chan!!! I wish Kise could get a better record.. but I want Toyo-chan to get the yusho or at least a chance at the ketteisen with jun-yusho! He really has earned that this basho.

You know in September after the gambling scandal and the day he got the yusho he told me that he felt so bad for being suspended and demoted to juryo, that he fought hard for the yusho in juryo to get back to makuuchi. He said that day that maybe the gambling demotion was the best thing that happened to him because he really felt he had to work harder. After seeing him this basho I think it may have been the best thing for him! I am really proud of him!!! (Showing respect...) uuhh but still a little angry he beat Baruto (Shaking head...)

Thank you again everyone for my yusho!!! If I told you I was so happy I had tears in my eyes at first would you believe me?? (Yusho winner...)

(Showing respect...)

Yes, Kotoviki's 11 wins sets the record. And as Asashosakari alluded to, she is also the first to limit her losing streaks to a single day.

This basho set all kinds of records. Up until this now, there were only two instances of 10 wins in the history of the game; this time alone we had 5 players with double digit wins.

We also had 6 different winners for the 6 tournaments in 2010 - Maguroyama, Gernobono, Holleshoryu, Asashosakari, Yaochoyama and Kotoviki.

I think Kofuji should get extra credit in the shukun-sho for predicting days 1-5 correctly before the basho even started! (Showing respect...) Would have had a real KK if I hadn't fallen asleep at the switch one day ...

Profomisakari is no longer kadoban.

Thanks Jejima for setting KK not higher as 8-7 !!

So I can lucky hold my ozeki rank.

But it was a hard fight, especially as I must made my pics for the last 4 days with an (very complicated?) algorithm.

Because of them especially thanks to Bob (Kofuji) and Pierre (Asashosakari) for the correct interpretetion of my picks.

Next basho I hope my competitors are not so good as this time and I can be better.

Have a good Christmas time!

Profomisakari
