ryafuji 814 Posted August 13, 2010 Anyone know what happened to Stefan Gelow's sumo site? It seems to have disappeared. His makuuchi database was indispensable for me because it's the only place I've been able to find information such as what rikishi listed as their favourite kimarite. Kofuji 0 Posted August 14, 2010 Pages for the site still seem to be in Google's cache but the dates are in June, so the site may be gone. Going by the cache, it would appear that the site hasn't been updated in 10 years. I'm surprised that you couldn't find what you wanted in the Sumo Reference). At the moment it appears to be the only updated source other than the NSK site. If you have any specific things you want to query, someone may be able to help you set the query up. I know it hasn't been updated in a while, but I still found it very useful. Sumo Reference has a lot of things, but not (yet) rikishi's favourite techniques (not necessarily the same as kimarite they use most often to win). It also doesn't indicate whether a rikishi favours migi or hidari yotsu.
Asashosakari 19,320 Posted August 14, 2010 (edited) prommain.zip That reminds me, I ought the grab the pre-1909 tournament 'winners' pages from the cache before they disappear... Nope, gone already. Gotta scour archive.org, I guess. Edited August 14, 2010 by Asashosakari

It also doesn't indicate whether a rikishi favours migi or hidari yotsu. If that's what appears in the NSK site's favourite grip/techniques like here: after July Hakuho Heya : Miyagino Name : Munkhbat Davaajargal Ring Name History : Hakuho Date of Birth : March 11, 1985 Place of Birth : Mongolia Height : 192.0cm Weight : 154.0kg Career Record : 546-145-21 Makuuchi Division Career Record : 452-97-21 Makuuchi Division Championships : 15 Juryo Division Championships : 1 Outstanding Performance Award : 3 Fighting Spirit Prize : 1 Technique Prize : 2 Kinboshi : 1 Favorite Grip/Techniques : migi-yotsu/yori Then I have it scraped historically since Aki 2001. For some reason, until just now, I never put together that before the / was the grip and after was technique. Since I have the information, it may not be too hard for Doitsuyama to stuff it into the Sumo Reference. Glancing through some sample data, it looks like once a rikishi reaches makuuchi, the information is put in the database and not changed again, although it did for Tochiazuma. Asashoryu added the yori to favourite techniques a couple years into my recording. Looks like the database has the data for most rikishi even lower division ... Asashosakari 19,320 Posted August 14, 2010 (edited) Looks like the database has the data for most rikishi even lower division ... I doubt it's most of them. I can't speak to how they did it in the early days of the Kyokai DB, but nowadays lower-division rikishi get this field added (and their height/weight updated with current values) when they do something publicity-worthy, i.e. normally when they start a basho 6-0 and get to compete for a yusho on Day 13. For rikishi who somehow manage to reach the higher levels without ever figuring into a yusho race it's typically added upon their juryo debut, though as you've noted there may be some rare changes to the data subsequently. (I imagine Asashoryu's changed shortly after his promotion to yokozuna, when he started winning a lot more by yorikiri.) In any case, ryafuji's interested in the data for all historical makuuchi rikishi, which is what was available on Yubiquitoyama's site. Kofuji 0 Posted August 15, 2010 For interest, here's what I have in my database for techniques. The file contains the rikishi's rank at Nagoya if they were still on the Banzuke and each real change in technique with the basho it was first noted. Punctuation and spaces were stripped to ensure the change wasn't just cosmetic. Shikona history wasn't originally available from the NSK data page so is missing on some records. You will see that some rikishi have duplicate entries in the NSK database. Hope this is useful to someone ... Technique201007.zip
Yubiquitoyama 4 Posted August 16, 2010 I'm glad someone actually noticed it disappeared despite there being so much newer and better sources nowadays. I have all of it somewhere on my harddrive, so if anyone would like something, please PM me. My internet provider stopped providing personal homepage space and therefore I just let it disappear... There are a couple of terms that I don't recognize, however, can someone tell me what they mean? On Munakata's (1140) entry: mae-mitsu, kuisagari. On Ichinotani's (1097) entry: ryo-sashi/yori.
