Harumafuji survived another scare to get his second win, but the other three ozeki as well as yokozuna Hakuho had easy wins, all displaying their style of sumo, to make it the first day with all yokozuna and ozeki winning. Kisenosato won the sekiwake battle against Kotoshogiku, a difficult opponent for him. Kakuryu and Homasho stayed undefeated, the latter showing off henka's finest.

Masatsukasa improved to 5-0 with a win over Sakaizawa while only three of the six pursuers were able to stay one win behind with Asofuji, Tokushinho and Kasugao. Both shin-juryo Sadanoumi and Kaisei won, but Masuraumi from Onomatsu-beya is down to 0-5, and looks poised to make room for another promotion from makushita.
