Day 4 lower division results

Recommended Posts

Mongolian Shironoryu won against young Takayasu to make it three rikishi at 2-0 in the juryo promotion zone as some of the new faces in juryo next basho begin to materialize. Aoiyama lost to Sotairyu and quickly loses his longshot chance for a promotion from Ms15w. Mongolian Takanoiwa suffered three consecutive make-koshi after the high sandanme yusho in Kyushu 2009, but he seems to be back on track as he is 2-0 with a win against Kotomisen.

Jd43w Tamakishin (1-1) yorikiri Jd43e Yatsurugi (0-2)

Jd40e Juban (1-1) yoritaoshi Jd41e Takeda (0-2)

Jonidan rikishi Juban made news today, in a bout he wasn't even directly involved in. In the bout between Tamakishin and Yatsurugi, Yatsurugi did utchari on his foe, and the gyoji awarded him the victory. However, the eagle-eyed Juban, sitting at ringside, noticed that Yatsurugi's foot was actually outside of the dohyo when he finished his move. So Juban raised his arm and called for the mono-ii, something he is entitled to do yet something that is rarely ever actually done, especially in the Jonidan ranks.

After the match, Juban said "Everyone is out there gambarizing their hardest, so I thought it best to not leave the match with such an unpleasant aftertaste." Tachitagawa-oyakata was also surprised. "I was about to raise my hand, but he had already raised it!" The victorious Tamakishin also said "I am grateful for his assitance."

EDIT: And according to a post on the Sumo ML, Juban is withdrawing from the basho from Day 5. After winning his match and giving interviews? Strange... All is fine. Rock on, righteous Juban! (Laughing...)

I didn't know about this, I didn't notice it sitting right there.. but as a friend of both Juban's and his sister and mother I'm very excited by this news!!!! (Laughing...)

strange indeed!!! I've already sent an email to him to find out what's up! I hope Yatsurugi didn't attack him, or sick a bunch of angry yakuza on him for calling the monoii....

The mystery is solved! It is Takeda who is withdrawing, not Juban. ・東序二段四十一枚目 武田(鳴戸部屋) Juban just emailed me back to say he was fine, and had a match tomorrow.... Takeda was injured badly in the match. He had to be carried from the dohyo and taken to the hospital.

The Sumo ML (Laughing...) , where you go for the facts.. Did they also mention that Juban lives in Azabu? (Holiday feeling...)

I admit to being too lazy to double check the Kyokai site! And I would have gotten away with it, if it weren't for those meddling kids...

Having not witnessed either incident, does anyone know if the rikishi who calls for the monoii gets to participate in the monoii itself?

He does get invited to the party afterward, though.

You know, Japanese readings are tough, even for people living there... in the May "Sumo" magazine is a cartoon with an announcer botching the readings of all ozeki. Anway it's this guy.

Ah, Minatofuji! No wonder the other guy was quicker on the draw... I do miss him.
