Day 1 results and day 2 pairings

Recommended Posts

Tochiozan managed the surprise of the day, beating ozeki Harumafuji quite straight forward and convincingly. No other surprises among the sanyaku, even the loss of sekiwake K-Shog to Kyokutenho is following the head-to-head numbers, now 9-7 for the tall Mongolian.

Shin-makuuchi Gagamaru had to meet fellow Georgian Kokkai of all people, with Kokkai winning the bout. All three Georgians in Ozumo are in makuuchi now, a tidy 100% rate which (with at least three rikishi) happened before only in Nagoya and Aki 2000 when all three Americans Akebono, Musashimaru and Sentoryu were in makuuchi.

The four promotees to juryo all lost today, among them the two shin-juryo Sadanoumi and Kaisei. Kachi-koshi in the upper juryo half might see makuuchi promotions at a discount rate this basho, making them more valuable than usual, and Chinese Sokokurai is off with a good start, beating Sagatsukasa with a nice uwatenage. No other non-former makuuchi rikishi in the upper half though, so makuuchi debuts will be scarce, except a big basho from Tokushinho, Matsutani or Hoshikaze, but only Tokushinho got a win today.

You know, this would be an excellent time for an exciting three-way yusho race between Hakuho, Baruto and Kisenosato.

I was thinking Kotoshogiku, but that was before today's match, of course... (Applauding...)
