Doitsuyama 1,178 Posted May 22, 2010 Hakuho yoritaoshi'ed Kotooshu to run his newest winning streak past 30 consecutive wins and get within one win of a second consecutive zensho yusho, something which only Futabayama, Taiho (three times), Chiyonofuji, Takanohana and Asashoryu have done in 15 day basho. It never has been achieved for three consecutive basho, though Chiyonofuji came close, losing to Onokuni on day 15 in the third basho. Kaio okuridashi'ed Aminishiki for his 999th career win to give another storyline for senshuraku, and possibly into next basho. But foremost he and fellow ozeki Kotomitsuki (with a win over Harumafuji) managed to get the kachi-koshi and avoid kadoban. Baruto now is the leading ozeki at 10-4 and with another win he can secure the top ozeki position on the next banzuke already. Kisenosato easily beat Hakuba to finally get the kachi-koshi and stay sekiwake. Komusubi Tochiozan avoided make-koshi for a third time and can stay in sanyaku with a win over Tokitenku tomorrow. That would suit the banzuke makers just fine I suppose as the sanyaku promotion candidates are showing signs of weakness, Tochinoshin for example losing to Tokitenku to stay at seven wins. Bushuyama is the sole juryo leader and if he beats demotion candidate Sadanofuji tomorrow he can avoid a playoff. No less then five rikishi at 9-5 are hoping that he'll lose though to lead to a possibly crowded field at 10-5. There are news on the demotion side, but Sadanofuji, Wakatenro, Kanbayashi and surprisingly Futeno (with five straight losses now) need to win tomorrow. Asashosakari 19,150 Posted May 22, 2010 I have no idea what happened to Futeno this basho. He looked quite good in the first week even after his initial four-win streak was over - still lacking a lot of power compared to two years ago, but his agility and ring sense seemed to be much improved over the last few tournaments. But somewhere around the middle weekend he completely lost the plot again. (Laughing...)
