shoutenzan 0 Posted May 20, 2010 Hakuba sure looked good today. It made me think that if he remains consistent and eventually reaches Yokozuna, would they call it the Haku-Haku era? (Laughing...)
Gusoyama 95 Posted May 20, 2010 he better get there quick. He's 2 years older than Hakuho...
Achiyama 1,223 Posted May 20, 2010 (edited) Hakuba sure looked good today. It made me think that if he remains consistent and eventually reaches Yokozuna, would they call it the Haku-Haku era? (Laughing...) Isn't it too early to talk about Hakuba becoming an Yakozuna? Come on, he has only 3 Maegashira basho behind his back, hasn't been a Sanyaku yet and you are talking Yakozuna. Wins over Harumafuji and Kotooshu don't make him a pick for Yokozuna. Moreover, he is well known with his henkas. He is not called Henkuba for nothing (Sumotalk comments)! And, it is a common knowledge that, it is unforgivable an Yakozuna to use henkas. Am I right? Edited May 20, 2010 by Achiyama
Asameshimae 220 Posted May 20, 2010 Hakuba sure looked good today. It made me think that if he remains consistent and eventually reaches Yokozuna, would they call it the Haku-Haku era? (Laughing...) Anything to liven things up. I know that the pundits want a strong, consistent Yokozuna who wins and wins. It is also boring as hell. I didn't watch sumo as much as I usually do during Asashoryu's really dominant period, and with Hakuho's more level headed plodding way of winning and winning, I fear I am going to lose interest in even following the makuuchi yusho race. Baruto could have at least made it interesting yesterday by putting up a fight against Hakuho and showing everyone we have someone who is going to make Hakuho work for his future yusho, but nope, not this time. I totally agree with you. I am, also, against single domination by one person, in this case Hakuho. I'd like to see 3-4 aggressive rikishi, who could beat anybody and in this way to spice up the Basho. So, you won't know who will win the next basho. It will be much more interesting to watch and harder to predict. My point in my comment was that let Hakuba prove himself as a consistent warrior before praise him as an eventual next Yokozuna. Too strong words for me. That's all. Edited May 20, 2010 by Achiyama

I thought henkas were frowned upon by Ozeki as well.

Although winning is important, losing with style has a certain class. Today, Kitataiki did some very nice sumo against Baruto, but lost anyway. Baruto's sumo is looking quite bad overall, but he got his 10 wins. Should he be proud? I guess. Shin-Ozeki is a tough job.
Kris 0 Posted May 22, 2010 It looks like Baruto is completly exhausted and can't wait when this basho ends. No energy. Just look his tachi-ai today. Hopefuly after this basho he can rest mentally and physically. Rest well and start to prepare for Nagoya basho. Like shoutenzan said, Shin-Ozeki is a tough job and credit to him. Speaking of Hakuba bout today, really liked Kisenosato sumo. Smart and strong. Hakuba tried to sidestep a little, but Kisenosate made smart tachi-ai, didn't storm foolishly, used momentum well. Its easy to cheer for him. (Laughing...)

Yeah, Kisenosato is one of my makuuchi favorites. Tochiozan and Goeido also looked good today. I'm hoping Okinoumi will have a better basho in Nagoya. Asameshimae 220 Posted May 22, 2010 "kachi wa kachi" I totally agree with this. If pundits don't like henka, make them illegal, either that or keep quiet about it. I suspect this has never been done is because they know that determining what is actually a henka and what isn't is too difficult. I was there the day a few basho back when Kaio got an early and surprising hold of Hakuho's arm and pulled an upset win that help solidify Asashoryu's last yusho. I was cheering him loudly on the whole way. Whether this move is truly a henka or not is highly debatable, but that is what a lot of people called it. Anyway, a wrestler should be ready for anything, including the other guy pulling a henka. If every other bout was a henka, I could see the complaints, but now it is just one more weapon in one's arsenal to beat an opponent, which can go wrong for the puller of the henka much of the time as well. Treblemaker 254 Posted May 23, 2010 Hey guys! Can't you let shoutenzan have his little joke? I thought it was amusing anyway... Me too; though I don't associate this forum with generally having a good sense of humour... How sadly true this comment is...... Can count on one hand how many forum members have a sense of humour, and use it. And would still have fingers left over to scratch self with... However, life goes on... I used to hate the henka, until I realized that the issue isn't necessarily with the henka-er but the henka-ee. Anyone who grabs at air and eats clay simply wasn't paying attention and keeping an eye on the opponent. I've come to appreciate Henkuba a lot more this basho - everyone knows what he's going to do, and to fall into that trap - well, they have no one to blame but themselves. Two guys line up a metre apart... how can you not spot a henka in the making? Sure it's cheap, sleazy and cheesy, but it's legal and the onus is on the other guy to do something about it. Asashosakari 18,786 Posted May 23, 2010 (edited) Can count on one hand how many forum members have a sense of humour, and use it. I think what you're interpreting as a forum devoid of a sense of humour is more a case of a customer base that expects a higher level of quality than what's being offered. And would still have fingers left over to scratch self with... As I was just saying... Edit: To make it a little more blatant - I love gorging on fast food from time to time, but I'd never tell somebody who thinks McD's is junk, "Oh, you just don't have a sense of food." Aaand, you just proved my point. I never implied that the forum membership is totally devoid of humour, nor did I suggest that they were snobbish or elite-minded, as you've alluded to (although you may be correct in many cases). In my statement - that you quoted - there's a small word in italics. The fact that you misunderstood my post essentially proves my point.

I was talking about the kimarite that a rikishi often uses when he does a henka. I called it a hikikomori (引き籠もり) instead of a hatakikomi (叩き込み). After I thought about it I figured the hikikomori would either be a fusen or a new kimeteniyoranai kimarihou(決め手によらない決まり方).
