Doitsuyama 1,178 Posted May 18, 2010 Two young rikishi with high expectations got the kachi-koshi in makushita today with Tochinowaka and Masunoyama, the latter from his career high rank no less. Some eternal talents who don't seem to be able to upgrade their game another notch give new hope with the early kachi-koshi, namely Fujiazuma, Nakanokuni, Nionoumi, Ikioi and Kihonoumi. In lower makushita we have Terashita with the kachi-koshi, continuing his climb back up from jonokuchi and now already surpassing his old rank before the fall after a 24-2 record. 43 years old Tochitenko won against 20 years old Kairyu and needs one more win to have another makushita basho. In sandanme we have two more rikishi at 5-0 with veteran Saito and sandanme regular Tosahayato, both outsiders in the upcoming yusho deciders. Jonidan has four more undefeated rikishi now with yusho favorite Sasakiyama, Saishin (11-1 career with his only loss on day 1 last basho against Sasakiyama), Hokudozan and Sekiho. Mongolian Ryuonami beat Terutsuyoshi to join the jonokuchi yusho lead with Hashimoto. Asashosakari 19,150 Posted May 18, 2010 (edited) Ms34e Furuichi (3-2) kainahineri Ms30e Sakaguchi (2-3) Is it just me, or is it getting more and more frequent? In Furuichi bouts? Perhaps... 2003: 6 kainahineri in 21 wins 2004: 3/21 2005: 8/22 2006: 13/21 2007: 12/20 2008: 11/19 2009: 10/20 2010: 8/12 Should be about 7/12 based on the last few years, so not a significant spike yet, I'd say. Bealzbob 0 Posted May 18, 2010 Sd32e Chiyootori (4-1) tsukidashi Sd29e Dewahayate (3-2) :-) He's back. 2 more now and we're into makushita at 17 years of age.
Bealzbob 0 Posted May 18, 2010 Is it possible to search the database for rikishi who have debuted in a division lower or greater than a specified age? I'd be interested to know what age the 10 youngest ever makushita debutants were and where Chiyootori ranks in that respect (if he was to get there for Nagoya). Asashosakari 19,150 Posted May 18, 2010 (edited) Is it possible to search the database for rikishi who have debuted in a division lower or greater than a specified age? I'd be interested to know what age the 10 youngest ever makushita debutants were and where Chiyootori ranks in that respect (if he was to get there for Nagoya). Only in a roundabout way, e.g. this query combined with some spreadsheet magic. At any rate, off-hand I can think of four rikishi on the current banzuke alone who did make their makushita debuts before turning 18: Ryuden (17y 3m 15d on banzuke release), Masunoyama (17y 5m 27d), Kotoyuki (17y 11m 0d) and Chiyoarashi (17y 11m 17d). More historically, there's Wakanoyama (17y 5m 18d), and Kobo just missed it (18y 0d 8d). Not to mention a certain few dai-yokozuna, of course... Bealzbob 0 Posted May 18, 2010 Your final point is the reason I ask. At that age he is potentially 'on schedule' for a great career. Has anyone seen him in action and does anyone think he has 'it' ?
Randomitsuki 2,817 Posted May 18, 2010 (edited) Your final point is the reason I ask. At that age he is potentially 'on schedule' for a great career. Has anyone seen him in action and does anyone think he has 'it' ?Using my weird talent data, I found that almost exactly 2000 past rikishi were in Chiyootori's current cohort (17 years old in the 13th basho). Only 38 out of these 2000 had a higher relative banzuke position than Chiyootori at that time. Among these 38 were 5 later Yokozuna (Tamanoumi, Wakanohana, Takanohana, Onokuni, Futahaguro), 3 later Ozeki, 4 later Sekiwake, and 2 later Komusubi. On the downside, nine out of those 38 who were better than Chiyootori at the current stage, never made it to Juryo.Later edit: What's even more impressive with Chiyootori is that he lost almost a year through injury. That again, however, makes his future potential somewhat dubious. Edited May 18, 2010 by Randomitsuki
Bealzbob 0 Posted May 18, 2010 Thanks Randomitsuki. All interesting; and I agree, the injury makes his current position more impressive while also bringing his robustness and longevity slightly into question. Let's hope it's a one-off.
