Doitsuyama 1,173 Posted March 22, 2004 Kotooshu and Hagiwara virtually made certain of a double shin-Sekitori debut next basho with wins today, Kotooshu still has a good chance to win the Makushita yusho. Daishodai lost to the strong upper Makushita regular Yoshiazuma whom I expect to get to Juryo since some years. Hopefully he has the drive now. Onishi is 5-0 in Jonokuchi now, Kanbayashi has difficulties getting a kachi-koshi in his first Ozumo basho at 2-3 now after losing to Tamaasuka. -- Doitsuyama Jonokuchi Jk38e Asakubo (3-1) uchigake Takanobaka 0 Posted March 22, 2004 Hagiwara's meteoric rise appears to be fairly amazing. As for Kotooshu, hopefully this is the last time we'll see him out of the Sekitori ranks for quite a while. B-) Who else will he battle in Makushita? I'm guessing Kirinowaka will face Shironishiki, and Tachigami will face Maenowaka, but I guess Kotooshu will have to go against Ms18w Kitataiki since he's in the same heya as Kotokasuga. Barring something odd, it looks like we'll definately be seeing a playoff for the Yusho this time, possibly involving two Sadogatake deshi... Fun Fun Fun....if it ends up like I'm guessing (the Kotos and one of the low rankers in a playoff), then it should be very exciting to watch!
Asashosakari 18,786 Posted March 22, 2004 Warning: Long post ahead, and entirely uninteresting for those won't don't care about lower division torikumi. Barring something odd, it looks like we'll definately be seeing a playoff for the Yusho this time, possibly involving two Sadogatake deshi... Depends...a straight 7-0 yusho is still very much a possibility, and in my opinion the most likely one. For what it's worth, there were 8 rikishi at 4-0 after eight days. Normally that means a straight elimination tournament and no possibility for a playoff. Thanks to the two Sadogatake rikishi, it's a bit more complicated this time. B-) Possible scenarios: 1) Kotokasuga loses his 5th bout tomorrow, or his 6th bout on Day 11/12, or Kotooshu loses his 6th bout. In that case, no play-off and one guy will definitely end up at 7-0, either a Koto or one of the other four guys who are currently undefeated. 2) Both Kotooshu and Kotokasuga manage to go 6-0 (and would be the only ones achieving that), in which case each would probably have his 7th bout against a high-ranking rikishi who's at 5-1. (Kotokasuga-Hagiwara and Kotooshu-Yoshiazuma would be a possibility, assuming Hagiwara and Yoshiazuma each win their 6th bout.) At least that's what I remember the Kyokai did the last time such a situation happened. No guarantees though. B-) That leads us to... 2a) Both Kotos win their last bout, leading to a 7-0 playoff. When was the last time there was a 7-0 playoff in Makushita anyway? And would it be the first time for both rikishi to be in the Juryo promotion zone? 2b) One of them loses bout #7, the other one wins. Straight 7-0 yusho for the winning one. 2c) Both of them lose, leading to a huge 6-1 playoff. Fun for the whole Makushita! Who else will he battle in Makushita? I'm guessing Kirinowaka will face Shironishiki, and Tachigami will face Maenowaka, but I guess Kotooshu will have to go against Ms18w Kitataiki since he's in the same heya as Kotokasuga. Tomorrow's bouts are: Kotokasuga (Ms8e) vs. Maenowaka (Ms31e) Ryuo (Ms34e) vs. Tachigami (Ms41w) Depending on the results of that (i.e. who all exactly end up being 5-0), and barring any surprise decisions by the Kyokai, this should be followed by: If Kotokasuga wins: Kotooshu (Ms2e) vs. winner of Ryuo-Tachigami Kotokasuga vs. Kirinowaka (Ms57w), If Kotokasuga loses: Kotooshu vs. Maenowaka winner of Ryuo-Tachigami vs. Kirinowaka

Yubiquitoyama 4 Posted March 22, 2004 2a) Both Kotos win their last bout, leading to a 7-0 playoff. When was the last time there was a 7-0 playoff in Makushita anyway? And would it be the first time for both rikishi to be in the Juryo promotion zone? I felt the urge to find the answer to this one and it turns out its at least currently much less common than I thought. These are the occasions since 1970. I'm not entirely sure when the Makushita-division changed size, but at least during the 1960s it went to 100 or so rather than to 60, so the 7-0-playoffs were much more common. Note that 1970.07 two rikishi from the same stable and both high in Makushita met in a 7-0 playoff... Asashosakari 18,786 Posted March 22, 2004 (edited) This usually happens when the two 6-0 rikishi are too far away on the banzuke to merit a direct match and both win. Recently we had such a case as well (sorry, no specifics now...), and both LOST which of course is a common reason for big 6-1 playoffs as well. I didn't remember about it until you mentioned it and I looked it up just now. :-D The basho was Nagoya 2002, in which the two 6-0 rikishi were Furuichi (Ms15w) and Kyokunankai (Ms54e). I'll just quote your own post from back then. :-) The men in black didn't match up undefeated Furuichi and Kyokunankai as usual - maybe they didn't want to let Furuichi have an "easy" promotion to Juryo against the low-ranked Kyokunankai. Instead they matched himagainst Kinkaiyama, and promptly both undefeated rikishi lost making way for a Makushita yusho playoff with eight rikishi. So there are some more ways to get to a playoff this basho than the ones I outlined. Ah well. Since Kotooshu has already secured his promotion, I guess the above scenario would be most likely to repeat itself if the 6-0 rikishi this time are Kotokasuga and one of the four non-Sadogatake guys. Further correction to my post: I completely screwed up in my recollection about the potential last opponents :-P if the two Kotos are the last men standing undefeated. Turns out the last time it happened, the 7th opponent wasn't a 5-1 guy in either case. Hatsu 2003 saw Dewanofuji and Uchida/Futeno at 6-0, both of Dewanoumi-beya. Here's what the Kyokai handed them for their last bouts: Ms1e Edited March 22, 2004 by Asashosakari
