Mark Buckton 1 Posted March 18, 2004 (edited) Wow, Asashosakari-zeki, you are truly reaching high statto levels :-D Yeah baby, yeah, Grrrrrr. :-D Give it to me. ;-) (In a state of confusion...) Asashosakari 18,786 Posted March 18, 2004 Well, he's only one away from being run off the banzuke entirely.... Nah, that would only happen if he were to not appear at all (i.e. 0-0-7).

Asashosakari 18,786 Posted March 18, 2004 this means that you cannot drop lower than Jonokuchi? It's the lowest division, yes. Dropping out of Jonokuchi results in falling off the banzuke completely (becoming banzuke-gai). But as mentioned, that only happens if you're already in Jonokuchi and you sit out the entire tournament.
Takanobaka 0 Posted March 18, 2004 You're a stat guy, you might relish this challenge: how often in the past few years has someone suffered a bad MK (0-7 or 1-6) at the last position on the Banzuke and was still around for the next Basho? I don't know myself, but I always believed that this was grounds for 'mandatory' retirement, either because the Oyakata is to embarrassed to have someone so inept in their heya, or because the Kyokai itself sort of pushes them out, ESPECIALLY if it's someone who is somewhat of a veteran. Asashosakari 18,786 Posted March 19, 2004 (edited) Tatsuyutaka Jk48e 1998.11 (still active: 1-2 at Ms35e) There's an example that even one of those guys can have a relatively bright future. (Applauding...) And I seem to recall reading that long-time sekitori Aogiyama actually started his career with an 0-7 (and then some), so there's hope for all rikishi. (Dribbling...) Edit: Found the article I was thinking of. 10 losses at the start of his career. Edited March 19, 2004 by Asashosakari
