Guest Mojo Posted March 4, 2004 Hello, I'm from England, I am here to chat and maybe learn something about Sumo. I'm from Cornwall in England, and I would love to be a Sumo, but I feel that I am not heavy enough yet maybe I will be in a few years or so...we'll see. I hope that I get to talk with all of you and that I make friends out of you (Punk rocker...) bye for now Mojo
Kotoseiya Yuichi 3 Posted March 4, 2004 (Punk rocker...) Nice avatar. So, I understand you're a teenager as you mention you're growing still? (Although so do I at my ripe old age, if only horizontally... (Applauding...) )

(Punk rocker...) Cheers (Applauding...)

Fujisan 533 Posted March 4, 2004 Yes Mojo I have lived in England all my life,in fact I have only been out of the country once and then only as far as the outer hebrides in Scotland- I assume you was asking if I was a sumo wrestler? No just a big fan- I cant be a rikishi for many reasons one being my never leaving England, also Im too old(37),too thin (8st 12lbs),too short(5ft 3in) and just no good at sports. Guest Mojo Posted March 4, 2004 Ohh is there a hight restriction on being a professional Sumo?
Fujisan 533 Posted March 5, 2004 Last I heard there was I think it is 5ft 7in.
Kotoseiya Yuichi 3 Posted March 5, 2004 The limit is 173 cm (is that 5'8"?). The minimum weight is 75 kg (11.8 stones(?)). There do exist even shorter men which have been given an exempt if they have proven themselves fit for ozumo career in some kind of physical tests. I seem to recall 166 cm is still the absolute minimum (?). This kind of leniency was introduced some time ago to offer chance of ozumo career to as many debutants as reasonably acceptable since the number of newcomers has been low lately. Someone will undoubtedly correct my mistakes. :-)
aderechelsea 124 Posted March 5, 2004 Thank you all for your welcoming replies (Holiday feeling...) Aderechelsea, your in greece, you say "worry more about finding a way to become a rikishi in England" yes that is a problem, do you have the same problem in greece ? :-P no we have two Heyas here in Greece. The one of them is right next to my house in Athens. I think i will go there to kick some ass......... (Being thrown tomatoes at...) (I am not worthy...) ok i was just kidding.Of course there is NO way of becoming a rikishi in Greece but same goes for all countries, except Japan. If you seriously want to become a rikishi you have to go to Japan......
Fujisan 533 Posted March 5, 2004 Yes Koto but I think you will find it is less if you are under 18 yrs old.
Kotoseiya Yuichi 3 Posted March 5, 2004 I'm not sure about that. I think the height limit doesn't take into account the applicant's age.
Yubiquitoyama 4 Posted March 5, 2004 I'm not sure about that. I think the height limit doesn't take into account the applicant's age. Yes, that's true as far as I know too. The lower limit 167 cm (5 foot 5 3/4 inches) is probably not negotiable I'm afraid. :-P

Manekineko 200 Posted March 5, 2004 Belated hello from me as well! For British sumo association, your best way is probably to english sumo commentator on Eurosport, Syd Hoare. You can probably mail him through eurosport web pages... I'd advise you to try out amateur sumo first, before attempting to go to Japan. All European rikishi currently active have past experience either in amateur sumo or some other form of wrestling. Being big is not enough, you have to be fit! ;-) Good luck! Guest Mojo Posted March 5, 2004 Manekineko, hello! And yes you are right, big is not enough, but I don't think I want to be a eurosumo ;-)
Sasanishiki 57 Posted March 6, 2004 For British sumo association, your best way is probably to english sumo commentator on Eurosport, Syd Hoare. All European rikishi currently active have past experience either in amateur sumo or some other form of wrestling. Being big is not enough, you have to be fit! ;-) Welcome Mojo. I'd just like to update the comment that Manekineko made. if you want to contact the British Sumo Association you search their website http://www.sumo.org.uk/ and contact stevepateman@hotmail.com Manekineko is correct in saying that the Europeans currently in professional sumo in Japan began in amateur sumo in their own countries (and often European competitions). Many were also involved in another sport such as judo or Olympic wrestling classes. Although pro sumo has height and weight guidelines, as well as age ranges which it recruits, I'd like to make everyone aware (if they aren't already) that amateur sumo does not 'discriminate' in this way. Amateur sumo has weight divisions, which allow for more even matches in terms of the size of competitors. It also has junior championships (not sure of the age range) and you do not need to be young to begin the sport. There is also amateur sumo for women run along the same lines. Enquire at your local association. For those in Europe check out www.eurosumo.com/ and all others try www.amateursumo.com/ (although the information at this site is at least a couple of years old). You can always try Google as a source of information. And before you ask...no I do not compete in sumo, but amateur sumo is the topic of my PhD thesis. :-O

I don't want to bring my 1,75m/71kgr body in a dohyo against guys like Kaio. (at least not without a gun or something like that......... :-) )
Guest Mojo Posted March 6, 2004 Ok (Eh?) How tall is that in feet aderechelsea?
Kotoseiya Yuichi 3 Posted March 6, 2004 1.75 metres equals 5.74147 feet which is... er... 5' 8.9" (?). Didn't you guys get converted to metric already in Seventies? (Eh?)
Guest Mojo Posted March 7, 2004 Here in England we use feet and inches for hight of people and metric for other mesurements.... we just use both, I am more fermiliar with imperial mesurments though.
Zenjimoto 40 Posted March 31, 2004 (Laughing...) Hi fellas, I stumbled upon this site and I am just a day-old member. A malaysian chinese, and oddly enough (all my friends here commented that I am the only one who is so engrossed watching sumo on T.V without fail) finds sumo watching so interesting. Welcome, Benny! Great to see yet another flag pop up on the forum. Malaysia is fascinating, I enjoyed every minute of my very short biz trip there a couple years ago (Sigh...) Well, have fun in the forum, try the sumo games if it tickles your fancy (would be nice to see Malaysia's flag pop up there, too!) and very nice work on the cartoons, indeed! ;-) Cheers Zenjimoto
