Hello all seems like a very agreeable forum this one, I am glad to have found it (dont know how I ever missed it or all the Sumo games and Sumo ML) I never realised that there were other people like me out there! (Sign of approval) I had no idea that a thriving and passionate sumo community existed, I have merely enjoyed and appreciated by myself with the occasional conversation witth my Japanese father in law who is impressed with my knowledge ( nothing like some of the legends like Moti though godlike.gif )

I live in Nara and go to the Haru basho every year, my first one was the Takatoriki yusho, I went on day 12 and the crowd was phenomenal in their support for Takatoriki (eat your heart out Robocop).

I first got hooked on Sumo in NZ 15 years ago. On Friday night there was a 2hour sport show that I always watched and every week they showed one day of a basho leading up to day 15, tooka long time to get to day15! Konishiki was the ONLY reason they showed it. He was a celebrity in NZ and everyone called him Sally the dump truck, I didnt even know his real shikona back then

Anyway I instantly became a fan of the wolf, I quickly learned he was the man.

Then when I came to Japan I got back into it and until recently was oblivious to all you fine people but now I share my passion for Sumo ( my friends think I am a nut and cant fathom my Sumo addiction).

My favourite is Asashoryu and he has been my boy since I first watched him in Juryo. Its amazing how fast he came through the ranks. But I have stuck with him because I like his style, very unpredictable armed with a huge arsenal of kimarite that he uses extensively.

others I like are

Kaio( because Doreen Simmons says he is a real sweetheart). Just joking Kaio rocks because he is so strong and is a nage man. I like nage, its a good technique.

Takanowaka, I picked him 4 years ago because I thought he had a lot of potential, there is still time

Kasuganishiki has potential too, pretty quick.

Kaiho because he is the little guy but he hangs in there.

Hayateumi (welcome back to the top) because he is a little guy too but strong.

Takanohana was also one of my favs but alas his knees went.

Those who I dont like....

Miyabiyama.. (Sign of disapproval) really dislike him. Was very upset he was made Ozeki, was pleased to see him gone.

Buyuzan. predictable and boring

Musahimaru....gone now but I only saw him when he was super fat and superslow and boring to watch ditto to Akebono. Bulldozing is boring sumo.

I have seen old footage of Musashimaru when he was leaner and faster and he looked awesome, but once he hit Yokozuna he packed on the pounds and became boring.

Most predictable..Takanonami (gone on big guy I dare you not to flinch at the Tachiai or go for the overarm reach)

(Nodding yes...)

anyway I have signed up for many Sumo games and will be raising through the ranks like my boy Asa did. So keep an eye on me.

:-D

Welcome, welcome to you too, Sekihiryu! I noticed your rise in the sumo games last basho, and was happy to see the Kiwi flag emerge for the first time in my two games :-D Hope you'll enjoy this basho once more, and the forum in general. I am guessing that by your statement and sweetie-emoticon about Kaio, perhaps you are a female sumo fan, or did I guess wrong? (Eh?)

In any event, enjoy! (Nodding yes...)

Cheers

No no that was tongue in cheek (Eh?) that lovey sweetheart was for Doreen to Kaio, I know she holds Kaio in great esteem after reading many of her articles in the KTO magazine.

No I guess that statement was poorly written because I respect Kaio for his prowess not his body :-D also I was just playing around with the smilies (Nodding yes...) you guys have some great smilies on this forum.

maybe I will edit the original post.

Welcome once more sekihiryu from another Asashoryu and Chiyonofuji fan-

I also got my start watching sumo in the late 1980s,when the rikishi where more often known by their nicknames outside of Japan.

An Asashoryu/Kaio fan - that's great! For some reason this forum sometimes seems polarized between Asashoryu fans and Kaio fans. :-/

You are obviously no fan of Musashigawa-beya. :-) I have more or less come to terms with Miyabiyama nowadays, but I used to share your views before and during his ozeki days. Now that he is but a has-been I find it harder to really dislike him. (Clapping wildly...)

Most predictable..Takanonami (gone on big guy I dare you not to flinch at the Tachiai or go for the overarm reach)

(Applauding...)

Aw, come on! There is no one more predictable than Toki, not even Nami! (Laughing...)

anyway I have signed up for many Sumo games and will be raising through the ranks like my boy Asa did. So keep an eye on me.

Nice to see both Sekihiryu and Musashimanning, another new forum member, among the new recruits in Bench Sumo, BTW. :-)

Guest Musashimanning

Welcome to the online sumo world!

Just thought I'd point out that predictable isn't always bad (Bleh!) While predictable, Toki's matches are almost always exciting. Plus you have to love that hair! I do have to agree on Miyabiyama, but as a big fat lumbering former offensive lineman myself, I can appreciate Musashimaru (Applauding...) Lets hear it for fat and moving foward (In a state of confusion...)

I'm surprised that the Pro-Miyabiyama Movement hasn't responded to these vicious comments yet. (Dribbling...)

Seriously though, (Applauding...) to the forum, Sekihiryu! :-)

I thought I was being really nice to Miyabiyama in my comment? :-D

Oh, I fully agree with you there. Chiyotaikai is also rather predictable, and Akebono was too (as a rikishi (Dribbling...)), so it's not a bad thing in itself.

I used to dislike Toki, but he has made me a follower with his performances during 2003. "Sekiwake Toki" was a joke in this forum only a few months ago, but he almost made it in Aki basho. And he was robbed of a komusubi slot this basho. (Applauding...)

We of the Pro Miyabiyama movement will leave the man himself to do his talking at the coming basho when he will squash Iwakiyama like a bug-
