Doitsuyama 1,192 Posted March 26, 2010 Hakuho avoided a day 13 loss to Kaio this time to stay undefeated and on course for his 13th yusho. His last two opponents faced each other today as Harumafuji won a doozy against Kotooshu with a called hikiotoshi. Miyabiyama had his nine win streak broken today, and to say that Baruto overpowered him would be like an understatement as the bout was totally one-sided. Baruto secured his second consecutive jun-yusho (at least) and now has 33 wins over the last three basho which was not enough last time, but this time there is no weak middle basho, so I suppose he would get the promotion to ozeki even with two losses. It's likely that he will win another one or two though even if he's not that comfortable with his last two opponents (6-6 against Kotoshogiku and 4-6 against Kotomitsuki). Tochiozan is having a great basho and capped it with a nice win over ozeki Kotomitsuki, his fifth in a row now, to make a strong bid for a sanyaku promotion as he just overtook Miyabiyama in the pecking order. He can help his case tomorrow if he beats 7-6 komusubi Kisenosato. The other komusubi Aminishiki also is 7-6 with a spectacular uwatenage win over sekiwake Toyonoshima, both landing on their heads. Toyonoshima is make-koshi with that loss, making it a (likely) clear-out at the sekiwake rank. Kasugao finally fell to make-koshi and will fall to juryo along with his opponent Bushuyama, and a few more rikishi still need one more win to be safe with Sagatsukasa, Tamanoshima, Hokutoriki, Shimotori and Takekaze. Juryo leader Tamaasuka got his win streak broken at six as Tochinonada withstood his forward attack just good enough to put him down with a timely tsukiotoshi. Koryu is in the co-lead again, now at 10-3, as he beat Wakatenro, while Kimurayama had an oshidashi win over Daido to join Tochinonada at 9-4. The very recent makuuchi regular Futeno can't even get a kachi-koshi in lower juryo nowadays as he fell to make-koshi already with a loss to sai-juryo Tokushinho. Asofuji got credited with a susoharai against injured Shirononami but he didn't need to do much to see his aite falling. pisipepu 0 Posted March 26, 2010 The other komusubi Aminishiki also is 7-6 with a spectacular uwatenage win over sekiwake Toyonoshima, both landing on their heads. That was really scary landing, i was afraid they will break their necks :O It also brought me a guestion - as this was really tough decision for gyoji to make (shinpans came together and all) will he still be required to give "resignation" if he makes mistake in such case? Gusoyama 103 Posted March 26, 2010 I suppose he would get the promotion to ozeki even with two losses. I disagree with this statement. 2 losses to end the tournament, one of them against a Maegashira, would be deemed "unacceptable".

You think so? Seems pretty Juryo-tilted to me -- the bouts are critical for the sekitori, while none of the Ms opponents has a realistic chance at promotion. How do you figure? The only two makushita rikishi who are in a better position than that trio already have spots - Matsutani and Hoshikaze up, Shirononami and Asashoryu's empty spot down. I would hope that the carrying of the tanto is purely symbolic these days (Applauding...). In practice, do the top two not hand in a letter of resignation instead if they make a mistake? Or is it expected of sanyaku and other makuuchi gyoji too? That's what I was getting at.

Was it Akebono who had an empty sheath with sword hilts attached, for use in overseas jungyo?
