Tokitenkuu injured - kyujo

Recommended Posts

Tokitenkuu injured his right foot toe in his match against Tamawashi today, and is doubtful for tomorrow. He went to the KKan medical center after his match today and had 6-7 stitches, according to the doctor. "We'll be going to the hospital tomorrow morning to see what's what. It looks like it's going to be hard for him to show up for his bout tomorrow", said Tokitsukaze Oyakata.

Thumb? Do you mean "big toe", or does he have a hand injury too?

(mods, thread move?)

Anyway, googling for the diagnosis got me to this blog post. Caution: Not the most pretty pictures.

ever had a disloc? The month must be for the tough sumo guys... (yeah, they are kidding (Whistling...) )

strings need time to get back to normal, even if it wasn't open-but here it is-, if re-injured, you have fun with that all of your life...(says one who had a surgery caused by such a thing)

*shouldn't have clicked that link* ;-)

Yeah I have. A thumb, but it wasn't open like that.

In my case, it took nearly a year to get mostly back to normal, but a lot longer for some things (amazing what you can't do when you don't have use of a thumb - I'm right-handed and it was my right thumb)

I thought I'd post on this old thread instead of starting something new.

Does anyone have any news on Tokitenkuu's condition leading up to Hatsu? I cannot seem to find anything online (in English).

regards,

Tokitenku was kyujo for Kyushu (sounds like coo coo for coco puffs) with his injury given as a fractured right rib, with a recovery time estimated at 2 months. Fractured ribs are quite painful and generally have to heal naturally. While two months is on the short end of recovery time, that's true for almost every injury that rikishi have. Sumo is a rough sport like that (too rough, in my opinion, as it leads to shortened careers).

I haven't seen any updated information (medical information or keiko reports) about Tokitenku, other than he sat out the various jungyo tournaments, but I think he should be good to go for Hatsu.

I'll await his return.

Thanks Inhashi for posting this.

That is a terrible news...

One good thing is the early detection, even so it is a big problem to handle.

With his kyujo, he will be ms 6-10 on haru banzuke, and he is 36.

As he has to take care of his health, I'm not sure he will ever be on a dohyo again...

That is most unfortunate but finding the problem is a good thing. If he sits out the basho he may want to think about the long term future real soon.

His chemotherapy treatments are to continue through to April of this year. Just that alone is difficult for anyone.

Did you actually look at the date this thread was started?

Very concerning news just broke that Tokitenku is battling a malignant lymphoma. He has been given treatments of chemotherapy. Because it was detected early, according to oyakata, the course of therapy is 'good'.

The course of therapy depends on what is meant by "detected early" and the type of lymphoma. From what I've found on the Internet, there are two major types of malignant lymphoma, Hodgkin lymphoma and non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL). Hodgkin lymphoma is considered to be the most curable form with a ten year survival rate of 80%. The cure rate for NHL isn't quite as good. According to the American Cancer Society, if the patient is under 60 years of age, the lymphoma is at stage I or II and has not reached organs outside of the lymph system, and the person can function normally, the prognosis is considered to be good.

The best scenario would of course be a complete cure, but that will take time. Since Tokitenku is now 36 years old, it's questionable if he will ever return to sumo. He has been a very entertaining rikishi and I wish him a life free of this terrible disease.

I know a bit about MH and I can tell you a) it is well understood and curable, but also b) no fucking way will Tokitenku participate in competitive sumo within, say, the next two years. And this asumes it is stage I or II MH and not some evil exotic NHL.

Yep, I think he is done in sumo as a competitor. Chemo will strip the weight and muscle mass off of him and at 36 he has had a good career and has nothing left to prove. Here's hoping he makes a full recovery and is able to live a long and healthy life.
