Misisko 0 Posted September 21, 2009 Ms4w Takanoyama (3-2) tottari Ms7e Matsutani (2-3) Takanoyama!!! (Sign of approval...) The promotion (or at least prefect position for promotion next basho) seems to be more realistic now. Reminds me when there was last time such a skinny sekitori in ozumo? Asashosakari 16,985 Posted September 21, 2009 (edited) Late summary: After scuffling a bit for the last three tournaments, Georgian youngster Gagamaru looks poised to backdoor his way into juryo. Beating former maegashira Ryuho today he is the highest-ranked rikishi at 5-0 now and will likely be handed an easy-ish opponent at least for his next bout before probably getting a tougher final challenge, should he move up to 6-0. Ex-juryo Dairaido and Brazilian talent Kaisei are also 5-0 in makushita. West sandanme-hitto Mizuguchi knocked off his third makushita opponent of the basho, moving up to 5-0 himself and leaving only the aforementioned three makushita rikishi unbeaten. Perhaps we will see consecutive zensho records from that rank - if so, Mizuguchi will certainly hope to do better in his follow-up performance than last basho's runner-up Fukunohana who fell to makekoshi today. In sandanme six more rikishi remain unbeaten, among them collegiate rikishi Aoki, Naoe and Azumaryu, all from maezumo in Hatsu basho. BTW, stunning torikumi today...I don't think I've ever seen so many top makushita rikishi in action on the same day. Ms9w Nakanishi is the only single-digit-ranked guy who's having to wait for tomorrow (plus Miyamoto who already got to have his bout one day early, of course), so the top 17 rikishi were already done after the first day of the round. The promotion (or at least prefect position for promotion next basho) seems to be more realistic now. Reminds me when there was last time such a skinny sekitori in ozumo? Almost certainly Furuichi - just under 100 kg in his juryo debut, just over in his second go-around two years later. In any case, the promotion situation is a real mess this basho, even beyond Gagamaru's possible promotion. Right now, practically everybody from Ms1 to Ms4 still has a realistic shot at juryo. As long as the "right" guys end up MK, Takanoyama could certainly make it if he goes on to 5-2. Some cooperation needed from the juryo side, of course...right now it looks like there may be only two demotions. I hope they schedule lots of exchange bouts for the final five days... Doitsuyama 1,156 Posted September 21, 2009 The promotion (or at least prefect position for promotion next basho) seems to be more realistic now. Reminds me when there was last time such a skinny sekitori in ozumo? Almost certainly Furuichi - just under 100 kg in his juryo debut, just over in his second go-around two years later. Furuichi doesn't count - his BMI at the time of juryo promotion is even a bit higher than Hoshihikari's (both over 32 actually) while Takanoyama's physique pretty much resembles a normal human with a BMI of about 27. Since I didn't want to come up without an answer I made a bit of SQL, and here is the list of recent skinny shin-sekitori to beat. It's difficult to come up with such a list, because a lot of the weight data I have is dubious as several rikishi make a big jump in weight as the get strong enough to become a sekitori and I collect weights only yearly (which is why Asashoryu and Hakuho most certainly are too light at that point in Sumo Reference) or the "Sumo" magazine just didn't get around fast enough to update the weight data before 1990. Still, Ishinriki and Oshinoyama are good reference points for Takanoyama as these two look appropriately thin on the photos too. 2007.07 Hoshihikari 32.1 2004.05 Kotooshu 31.8 1995.03 Kyokushuzan 31.7 1991.03 Mainoumi 30.4 1988.07 Kyokudozan 28.9 1987.05 Ishinriki 28.1 1974.03 Oshinoyama 26.
Anjoboshi 2 Posted September 22, 2009 Still, Ishinriki and Oshinoyama are good reference points for Takanoyama as these two look appropriately thin on the photos too. The two links do contain the local reference. Ishinriki and Oshinoyama are the correct ones.
shumitto 417 Posted September 22, 2009 Takanoyama can barely stand a tachiai face-to-face, as he has shown at least twice this Basho. It will really be an uphill battle should he reach Juryo.
Washuyama 588 Posted September 22, 2009 Doitsu - Just curious, where does Chiyonofuji rank on that BMI chart? I remember him to be quite thin in the 95-100 kg range.
Doitsuyama 1,156 Posted September 22, 2009 Doitsu - Just curious, where does Chiyonofuji rank on that BMI chart? I remember him to be quite thin in the 95-100 kg range. True, he was 97 kg at the juryo debut which is a BMI of 29.9 (which isn't exactly thin except going by sumo standards of course).
