Treblemaker 254 Posted September 11, 2009 Wow. A lot of good match-ups for Day 1. The top half resembles something you'd see around Day 8.
shumitto 418 Posted September 12, 2009 (edited) Wow. A lot of good match-ups for Day 1. The top half resembles something you'd see around Day 8. Yes, and with everyone you would expect to be ranked from #3 and higher currently being there only helps it. Day 2 will be also good with a hopefully genki Kotooshu taking on Kyokutenho, Kaio facing Kotoshogiku, Aminishiki versus Kotomitsuki and many other high-profile rikishi facing each other early on. ilovesumo 12 Posted September 12, 2009 Osh looked pretty genki in Keiko. Kotoshogiku had no chance.
Kozaru 0 Posted September 12, 2009 Anybody else get the feeling that Asa is vulnerable to Baruto on Day 1?
paolo 0 Posted September 12, 2009 Anybody else get the feeling that Asa is vulnerable to Baruto on Day 1? Yes, Baruto will surely be a good test to understand Asashoryu's form. He is very very very powerful and he is slowly learning how to fight in sumo. Asashoryu cannot win on a basis of power, so he must use technique and speed. If he loses to Baruto, his basho will be a long long pain....
Jejima 1,346 Posted September 12, 2009 Anybody else get the feeling that Asa is vulnerable to Baruto on Day 1? Yes, Baruto will surely be a good test to understand Asashoryu's form. He is very very very powerful and he is slowly learning how to fight in sumo. Asashoryu cannot win on a basis of power, so he must use technique and speed. If he loses to Baruto, his basho will be a long long pain.... Asashoryu has never lost to Baruto in a hon-basho..... so maybe not the best weather-cock. If, Asa loses, okay 'poor Asa', but if he wins, could still be 'poor Asa'.
Kozaru 0 Posted September 12, 2009 Asashoryu has never lost to Baruto in a hon-basho..... so maybe not the best weather-cock. I knew that, which is why I made the comment. Baruto has never beaten a Yok, but seems tomorrow might be his chance. Asa is vulnerable, and I have a feeling Baruto has a really good shot this time. Baruti will not beat Asa. :-)
paolo 0 Posted September 13, 2009 Unfortunately I did not have a chance to watch Asashoryu-Baruto bout. How was it ? Power, speed or technique ? Thanks
Kuroyama 715 Posted September 13, 2009 Unfortunately I did not have a chance to watch Asashoryu-Baruto bout. How was it ? Power, speed or technique ? Thanks Oh my God. Sheer power. Asa picked up Baruto and yorikiri'd him out, just like that.
Kozaru 0 Posted September 13, 2009 At the beginning of the English broadcast, the guys said that Baruto told the press he was looking forward to lifting Asa up and out of the ring. That explains why Asa worked him that way. Should teach Baruto a very valuable lesson. And you gotta love Asa for that attitude!
Jejima 1,346 Posted September 13, 2009 Well, I don't think we learnt too much from today's Asa vs Baruto, except that it is best not to goad the yokozuna before one's bout :-) Asashoryu could well end up with a stellar basho (13-2 or better) or a 'mediocre' (for him anyways) with 'only' 10 or 11 wins. We need to see him face a 'nippier' foe, who has defeated him in the past, before coming to any forecast.

Hakuho might have let Baruto leave the ring with a bit more of his dignity intact. Didn't I tell you? Baruto had no chance! I was right!!!! :-) Alright Arslan, you win this round! But I'll be back! *shake fist and laugh maniacally* (I'm happy Asa won, by the way).
