Doitsuyama 1,173 Posted November 23, 2003 (edited) Kagaya lost his last bout and with 5-2 will stay in Sandanme, where the yusho was decided today in a kettei-sen; Yakigaya won against Koshinoryu. The more interesting action is in the upper Makushita now as there could be a LOT of promotions. It looks like Dewanofuji, Senshuyama and probably Juzan too will be demoted from Juryo. Two Intai from Musashimaru and Aogiyama also free up spaces in Sekitori-land. Lastly the probable expansion by four Sekitori could increase the number of promotions from Makushita to Juryo to no less than NINE. So almost everyone in top Makushita with a simple kachi-koshi can hope: Ms16w Daimanazuru 7-0, Ms9e Hakuho 6-1, Ms3e Wakatenro, Ms5e Roho, Ms6e Tochifudo with 5-2 and Ms3w Gokenzan, Ms6w Hamanishiki, Ms7w Sumanofuji, Ms8w Raiko at 4-3 look like reasonable candidates for the nine promotions to me... but this is unchartered territory of course. Sentoryu announced his Intai and there are no rikishi from U.S.A. left in Ozumo anymore. -- Doitsuyama JonokuchiJk31w Edited November 23, 2003 by Doitsuyama
Kashunowaka 300 Posted November 23, 2003 Lastly the probable expansion by four Sekitori [...] I find it interesting that no one seems to be really sure that the expansion will take place for the coming basho ... If it is the basho after the next, we'll all look like a bunch of nitwits. :-P

Asashosakari 18,650 Posted November 23, 2003 (edited) Well, we'll know for sure Wednesday, so not too long to be in doubt :-D I must admit I'm awfully curious how they're going to get themselves out of the situation they've created (assuming the expansion happens) - I've made a quick and dirty banzuke guess, and even though I know that Senshuyama and Dewanofuji would normally be sure demotions, I just couldn't do it and keep a straight face. (Holiday feeling...) Not when the people taking their spots would be 4-3's at Ms7w and Ms8w... Edited November 23, 2003 by Asashosakari
Kotoseiya Yuichi 3 Posted November 23, 2003 This bothers me. Are banzuke positions counted absolutely or relatively? I think relatively. How else? For example, I lost on senshuraku in Bench Sumo and ended 7-8 at Ms5W. Normally I would drop to about Ms7E or Ms7W, perhaps. But what if the expansion does take place? Two more guys to makuuchi, two more to juryo. Wouldn't that mean that I could more or less keep my absolute banzuke position at Ms5W or even get an absolute promotion (of sorts) even though I ended makekoshi and got a demotion relatively (from rank #76 to about #80)?
