Doitsuyama 1,173 Posted November 22, 2003 All the lights were on the two top Makushita Mongolians fighting for a place in Juryo. Both failed, but in their shadow another Mongolian, even younger at only 18 years, might have succeeded! This is Hakuho at Ms9e who won against Wakatenro to finish the basho with a 6-1, and this might be enough if the announced expansion happens for the next basho. Small Furuichi also had a successful basho with 6-1, albeit in lower Makushita. He finished with his trademark kainahineri. -- Doitsuyama Jonokuchi Jk34w Aigaki (4-3) kotenage Jk38e Ishikawa (3-4) Jk29e Nakane (3-5) yorikiri Jk32w Ogata (2-5) Jk27w Takemura (4-3) kotenage Jk28w Yoavoshimaru 0 Posted November 22, 2003 I wouldn't be shocked to see a Takanonami intai. :-) Sumanofuji isn't as big as I thought from seeing him in action a couple of times, I see now looking at his stats, you're right.
Zenjimoto 40 Posted November 22, 2003 You were probably thinking of Susanoumi, who has retired.
Asashosakari 18,669 Posted November 22, 2003 (edited) EDIT again: It just struck me that if Takanonami continiues this way (he has been really bad this basho), Gokenzan might find himself being heyagashira of the once great Futagoyama stable in a few months... :-) Of course, Gokenzan is already past 30 years of age himself, so the question is how long he'd actually be able to enjoy that lofty position... Tenkashoryu 0 Posted November 22, 2003 This is Hakuho at Ms9e who won against Wakatenro to finish the basho with a 6-1, Oh yeah I know this kid, he has very strong wrestling background. His dad used to be one of the greatest yokozuna of history in Mongolian wrestling. So I bet he is gonna be strong sekitori. But I don't think he would get promoted to Juryo from next basho, he is Ms 9 at the moment so looks like he would become top Ms in next basho
Asashosakari 18,669 Posted November 23, 2003 EDIT: I checked: Gokenzan turned 30 in July (which happens to still be a year or 2 younger than I thought he was...) Yeah, I also thought he was already 31 at least, but at any rate, at 30 years and a few months, he technically is past 30 years. :-P Not that it matters much...he has never managed to become a steady sekitori and I doubt he's going to improve all that much in coming years, whatever his exact age is. More EDIT: Of course, Musashigawa is not completely devoid of the same problem. Kakizoe, Miyabiyama and Bushuyama are still relatively young, but not more either. Musashimaru retired plus Musoyama, Dejima and Wakanoyama quickly closing in on the end of their career, while Buyuzan aren't exactly a future hope either. Despite this basho's marvellous count of 8 sekitori the future doesn't look very bright. After those 8 there are no coming stars and barely coming sekitori, with only 2 Makushita-rikishi and a bunch of Sandanmes. In a not too far away future, Musashigawa-beya could well be crawling with oyakata, but no good rikishi to warrant their work... :-P Well, Musashigawa has never exactly been a hotspot for raising young rikishi, as opposed to grabbing lots of promising college rikishi. I wouldn't be surprised at all to see another Makushita tsukedashi out of Musashigawa-beya in spring...
Zenjimoto 40 Posted November 23, 2003 I wonder if the rumored "Takanohana effect" will perhaps bring fresh talent to Futagoyama, and perhaps Maru might do a little of the same for Musashigawa, now that they are Oyakata... does anybody know whether recruitment at Futagoyama has seen any boost?
