And Takahama is back to Hamanishiki??

Kyokutenhou-7th time post-war that the oldest Makuuchi rikishi holds a sanyaku rank

Ohh, now I get it - that's "7th-oldest rikishi to be promoted to a sanyaku rank". (Though the upcoming official banzuke topics will probably say 6th-oldest...)

Yes, I guess that's correct.. I know he's not the oldest Makuuchi, so I thought something was wrong, but I understood it later when someone posted an explanation...

Since my religious beliefs do not allow me to use queries on any site, does anyone remember a higher promotion to Makuuchi than Maegashira 7 , new-maku and/or sigh-maku?

Down in Sandanme, some guy changed his shikona to 右肩上がり, which means growing or expanding, but it's literally "raising the right shoulder" and that is extremely amusing to me. It's Sandanme 3, so it should be someone relatively known. I wait in anticipation to learn his identity.

I think it's Yoshino from Otake-beya, heretofore underway with his real name. Or Azumazeki-beya's Kubota, but he's more likely the other shikona change at Sd4, because the new one incorporates a rarely-used kanji from Ushiomaru.

Not in modern times. Tosanoumi & Miyabiyama in 1995 & 1999, respectively achieved M7 from J1 each with a 14-1 Yusho. However, if you go back to the 1930's and beyond there are occurences of Juryo rikishi being promoted even higher. If your beliefs don't allow you to query perhaps they allow you to look at the results here.

We have two higher (re)promotion in the modern era :

Daiju achieved M6e from J1w (Natsu 1970) (new-maku)

Wakamiyama achieved M6w from J1w (Aki 1968)

I think it's Yoshino from Otake-beya, heretofore underway with his real name.

Yoshino it is. Maybe inspired by Rohou's departure in some way?

"With all the bleakness we have had lately (Rohou scandal), I wanted something to bring us good fortunes!", explained Otake Oyakata about one of the strangest shikona ever given to mankind. Migikataagari. "I just hope people will notice my sumo and not the strange name..", said a bewildered ex-Yoshino.

Ozumo: Sandanme Yoshino changes his shikona to Migikataagari ("right shoulder raise")

"Migikataagari." On the 29th the ozumou rikishi name changes were announced and a rare name will be announced above the dohyo in Nagoyabasho.

Otakebeya's sandanme rikishi, Yoshino(21). Since last year's Nagoyabasho kachikoshi and subsequent rise to makushita, he has risen and fallen between sandanme and Otake oyakata (former sekiwake Takatoriki) gave him advice. "At this time the ranking appears surprising," said the man himself.

Last year, the heya's top rikishi Roho was axed over accusations of smoking weed, and the sumo world's image was tarnished. The Otake oyakata said, "Everything was bleak so in order for all of us to be happy we followed," the expectations of the deshi. Regarding Migikataagri, "I think it has become the primary topic of discussion, but I want to attract attention to sumo." Can you get rid of an elevator record by way of changing a name? "Hey you! Your shikona has changed!!" "Huh??" was about how the Rightarmraise shikona was announced to Yoshino. Yoshino (who is also the highest ranked rikishi at Ootake-beya) was notified of the change a day before the banzuke was announced. "Well, it has good symbols so I will gambarize..", he said. "I felt , like 'HUH???' I heard something about it before the May basho, but was it for real?? I kind of laughed a bit..", he said. "As I knew of the shikona change, I thought it was going to be something like 'something-riki' or 'something-hou' , the usual Ootake beya suffixes, but this??" He was officially told about it last evening by the Oyakata. Ootake is dead serious about this. "In these times of recession and general gloom I though this would bring in a ray of light into this world.. It's a shikona that makes everyone want to support it. Of course I'd like his achievements to improve as well. I want everyone who comes in contact with Yoshino to be blessed!", he explained.

Yoshino , however, managed to screw up twice when attempting to write his new shikona. "I got the kata (肩) character wrong..", he muttered.

Everyone is waiting to hear the yobidashi call out his name. "If I were my opponent, I'd probably crack up laughing..", he summed.

it's really surprising and funny - maybe for everyone except Yoshino. To be honest, I am surprised of the comments that are clearly in the "yeah, I agree it is stupid, but what can I do.." specter. I can imagine how furious he is inside...

And what was Otake thinking? Didn't he realize that he will make fun out of his highest ranked rikishi? "To bring a ray of light into this world"?? Either I really miss how fundamentally glorious the kanji of the shikona are, or maybe Otake's finding of Roho's secret stash has led to this sudden enlightenment.

At least he didn't do it to Morikawa.
