Randomitsuki 2,759 Posted July 3, 2009 A few contenders for hard-to-break records, if not unbreakable. Most consecutive basho ranked in Juryo - Sawakaze, 39. The nearest active rikishi is Kyokunankai, 23 and counting. Most consecutive bouts in Juryo - Hakuyuzan, 555. The last rikishi to even get close was Toyonoumi, 450, a decade ago. Good catch, these two! What makes them so unbreakable is the fact that Juryo was much bigger back then (36 or 38 rikishi). Incidentally, Sawakaze's streak ended when Juryo was cut down from 36 to 26 rikishi in May of 1967.
Washuyama 634 Posted July 3, 2009 Lowest rank held by a former sekitori - Ryumon, banzuke-gai. I never knew this.. He was one of the Dewanoumi sekitori to visit the base I lived on as a kid. Along with Yoshinotani and the current Dewanoumi. Good memories...
Asashosakari 18,657 Posted July 3, 2009 (edited) Most consecutive bouts from career debut - Aobajo, 1631. No active rikishi in the top ten for this category, I have no idea who the nearest active challenger is. Hokutoryu, of course. (Sign of approval...) If you meant sekitori, AFAICT it's Kotokuni with 661 followed by Kokkai with 632. The highest-ranked active sekitori is Tamanoshima, I think, who made it to 710 before his first absence. Most consecutive bouts from career debut by a lower division rikishi - Hokutoryu, 973 and counting. A truly inspiring Ironman who has never made it beyond mid-Sandanme. Hiyoriyama (798) was the last rikishi to even approach 800, and he retired last year. Nearest active challenger is kubinage fan Tanno, 756. Interestingly, there are no less than four rikishi who started their careers together way back in Haru 1993 and have yet to miss a bout; Nishikikaze, Tenichi, Isenohana and Taiyo all have 679 appearances. Shinnishiki also started with them and has one single fusenpai. (No other absences though, so he also has 679 bout results but just 678 appearances.) Edit: BTW, Kyokunankai's juryo streak was interrupted after 15 basho. Edited July 3, 2009 by Asashosakari
Yubinhaad 11,500 Posted July 3, 2009 Edit: BTW, Kyokunankai's juryo streak was interrupted after 15 basho. Ah, yes, thank you for the correction. This is what happens when you rush things instead of researching them properly! (Sign of approval...)
