Day 7 results and day 8 pairings

Recommended Posts

The two yokozuna continue to dominate their lopsided match-ups as Hakuho now is 9-0 against Baruto and Asashoryu 34-2 against Kyokutenho. Ozeki Harumafuji shows strong sumo this basho, quickly shoving Kakuryu out to stay undefeated. Kaio, Kisenosato and Takamisakari all won to stay one win behind the lead, but Kakizoe and Kotoshogiku (suffering a painful ketaguri to Tokitenku) are down to two losses. All seven yokozuna and ozeki won for the second consecutive day, bringing Kotooshu, Kotomitsuki and Chiyotaikai to 5-2. Must have been a long time that all yokozuna and ozeki are 5-2 or better after seven days, with seven or more of them.

Juryo saw a familiar pattern today with all three leaders losing. The leader group at 5-2 is six rikishi strong but it could have been more as only three rikishi out of seven at 4-2 got a win today. The still pretty new juryo Kotokuni looked promising the last few basho (25-12 over the last three basho) but maybe reality caught up with him like it did with Yotsuguruma last basho as he is down to 1-6 already. Wakatenro also is 1-6 and might be another rikishi getting more juryo run than really deserved as he stayed in juryo with a 28-32 record over the last four basho (indeed rising from J14w to J9w based on the huge banzuke luck three basho ago, moving from J14w to J5w with 8-7).

Okinoumi's juryo career has been quite disappointing. He doesn't show much ability to break free from makushita level sumo and loses feebly a lot. He might have been a rikishi whose career gets a Shotenro like move upon arriving in juryo but he has turned out to be a grey rikishi without anything really to offer so far. Maybe he gets his act and body together and shows different kind of sumo in Hatsu 2010 but for now he lacks everything.
