Did anyone catch the last thing Hakuho said in Mongolian after accepting the NHK trophy? He was asked to explain what he said, in Japanese, but would be grateful if any Mongolian-speaking forum members could help with the original translation. Thanks in advance!

Literal translation is sounded like this:

Hakuho:

Regardless of how far away from you, I am very happy to share this happy moment marking my tenth yusho with my father, mother, brother, sister and fellow Mongolians.

As a concluding remark, I wish in this new year of Ox, good spirit, good health, and success to all my fellow countrymen and women. Thanks.

A better translation could trickle in. But I've noticed that Hakuho's Mongolian is clearly not the very best. I think he speaks better Japanese.

How is it possible ? Hakuho came to Japan at about 15, as far as I know. Mongolian is his mother tongue. Do you think he could have lost his Mongolian while living in Japan (which I cannot believe), or do you mean he never spoke good Mongolian ?

It's true his Mongolian wasn't perfect. Probably when you live outside of your country for long time you loose the sense of language because you are not using it that often. While living in Japan Hakuho use more Japanese than Mongolian. So he just forgot how to speak it. (Bomb about to be blown...)

Especialy since Hakuho (unlike Asa) cannot speak Mongolian to his wife... It's true that a decade is a relatively short time to get rusty in one's native tongue, but stranger things have happened.

BTW, am I the only one who thought Hakuho was prompted to this by Asa's Mongolian outburst in the last (I think) basho, and would not have done it otherwise?

I rather think it's the effect of ilovetochinoshin waving her Mongolian flag at the yusho winner. (In a state of confusion...)

I don't know about Hakuho, but my impression from Kotooshu's speech when he won the yusho was that his Bulgarian sounded a lot like a Japanese translation and the intonation was quite Japanese as well. Anyway, I think they could easily re-acquaint themselves with their mother tongue in less than a week.

I think he was a little bit surprised by that question, so his natural reaction was to reply what he (obviously) replies usually ("Please continue to cheer for me", etc...), just "translated" in Bulgarian. And the intonation I think was naturally connected to the content. So it wasn't really a surprise for me - considering that asked to speak in Bulgarian was a surprise for him (Bearded disguise...)
