NHK English commenators and the Sumo database

Recommended Posts

Do the NHK English commentators know about the awesome sumo database? I think not, as Murray Johnson got his information incomplete today and slightly misinformed viewers.

While discussing the poor record of Taikai he quizzed the audience as to who had the worst ever record as an Ozeki ( and told the audience not to google it) then announced it was Konishiki in 1988 and next was musoyama in 2000.

While this is trueits not entirely accurate - a quick query (5 seconds )of the database shows that Konshiki doesnt hold the record alone he shares the record with 4 others.

Daikirin 1973.03 O1w 3-12

Asahikuni 1978.09 O1w 3-12

Masuiyama 1980.11 O1w 3-12

Wakashimazu 1985.11 O2wHD 3-12

and Musoyama did have 4-11 but so did 5 others including the current takasago oyakata,

Kagamiiwa 1939.05 O1w 4-11

Saganohana 1950.09 O1w 4-11

Kitabayama 1965.07 O1w 4-11

Yutakayama 1968.09 O2wHD 4-11

Asashio 1988.11 O1w 4-11

Seems a shame if they dont use a great resource.

the NHK people are given a piece of paper an hour or two before the broadcast and TOLD what to say - and when to say it. The pro commentator has it as does the guest if they have one.

Beside each bout is a note on which comments to cover - may have been his own fault (he had Masutoo as an up and comer a few days ago) but may have been NHKs/

Ok I thought they might have done their own research in the morning....perhaps the lackies handing the pieces of paper are the one who need to know the tools potentially at their disposal.

IIRC, the person in charge of the English braodcast isn't full time NHK anyway. Orion / Simmons will know if around soon.

Anyway, it is this bod doing the briefing ahead of time so not really a lackey. If the 'team' have anything to say I presume they can do so at that time but you know NHK.....
