Mark Buckton 1 Posted March 16, 2009 (edited) and one of the best sumo writers out there has a year long column in a Japan/US magazine on Kitazakura so fingers crossed he is still with genkiness Edited March 16, 2009 by Mark Buckton
Asashosakari 18,968 Posted March 16, 2009 Gagamaru pushed him out easily today, and there seemed to be no fight in him. Is this it? His timing seemed to be off somehow, as though he expected a matta call. His tachiai didn't look so bad, but he nearly stopped moving after getting the first push back by Gagamaru... Asojima 2,873 Posted March 16, 2009 He seemed to be distracted by the crowd during shikiri. It looked like his concentration was elsewhere. The concerned Kita watch continues.
Tikozan 4 Posted March 16, 2009 I fear, Kitazakura could be retire if he does MK ;-)
Kuroyama 715 Posted March 17, 2009 He seemed to be distracted by the crowd during shikiri. It looked like his concentration was elsewhere. The concerned Kita watch continues. That was the feeling I got, although it's really hard to subtleties from the stream. (It's hard enough just telling what people look like with that picture.) Hopefully he's just having some trouble re-adjusting to a makushita schedule and will be on-form for the rest of it.

Asashosakari 18,968 Posted March 19, 2009 He didn't look good at all today - Yoshiazuma may be tall, but he's one of the least aggressive rikishi around in that banzuke area (think Takanonami without the excessive kime reliance), and if you're being marched back in short order by that guy, it's probably not a good sign. After seeing the first three bouts - I don't think Kita's coming back to juryo again. (I am not worthy...)
Orion 431 Posted March 19, 2009 and one of the best sumo writers out there has a year long column in a Japan/US magazine on Kitazakura so fingers crossed he is still with genkiness Could you give us more details? I'm always happy to read a good column -- though it might take me some time to read it if it's a year long. Orion
Takamizakura 1 Posted March 19, 2009 Are you referring to the article mentioned in this thread?
Orion 431 Posted March 20, 2009 Are you referring to the article mentioned in this thread? Many thanks. I'd missed that thread entirely. I met Chris Gould last year at (or after?) a dampatsushiki and have since read several of his pieces in the online Sumo Fan magazine. He's a very good writer. Asashosakari 18,968 Posted March 23, 2009 Did anybody catch today's bout? I missed it by less than five minutes...
Asojima 2,873 Posted March 23, 2009 Did anybody catch today's bout? I missed it by less than five minutes... Kita won, but our cameraperson was taking a scenic tour throughout the whole match.

Asojima 2,873 Posted March 24, 2009 (edited) KK on Day 10. He didn't look all that genki, but he outlasted 4WD. One more win will probably get him back into Juryo. At least, he had some salt to toss today in his Juryo visit. Edited March 24, 2009 by Asojima
Asashosakari 18,968 Posted March 24, 2009 KK on Day 10. He didn't look all that genki, but he outlasted 4WD. Yeah, pretty much. As mentioned upthread I honestly didn't expect he'd get the KK, but even so he's been struggling hard for every inch of dohyo space against guys who are barely borderline juryo quality themselves. Makes me afraid he's going to pull what Kobo did a while ago - 4-3 first basho, narrowly missing the re-promotion, then crash'n'burn next time. (Applauding...) Tikozan 4 Posted March 24, 2009 I also think, he needs a 5-2 for a safe re-promotion. Kotoyutaka, Yoshiazuma, Tamaazuka (all 4-1) could jump him and Sagatsukasa has a chance for KK with two wins in his last bouts And in Juryo I see at this moment 2 demotions (Yotsuguruma, Otsukasa) and 1 free slot
