Kintamayama 45,484 Posted February 10, 2009 (edited) Asashouryuu intends to go on vacation to Hawaii as a prize for his yusho. According to his people, he will be leaving after Harumafuji's Ozeki promotion party on the 21st. This vacation has been planned since the middle of last basho. At first, Cebu Island was the destination, but Asa voiced his wish to go to Hawaii, where he seemingly had a good time last year. He is also planning on leaving right after tomorrow's one day tournament for a visit to Mongolia. Edited February 10, 2009 by Kintamayama

Kintamayama 45,484 Posted February 19, 2009 Asa has started training. Mostly weightlifting. 160 kilos curl, 3 sets of ten times and 750 kilos of leg press, three times, whatever the heck that means. "I couldn't stand up during my meal", he joked. He has not returned to Mongolia so far, but he said earlier that he planned to go after the 21st, so there's still time. sekitori 492 Posted February 19, 2009 Asa has started training. Mostly weightlifting. 160 kilos curl, 3 sets of ten times and 750 kilos of leg press, three times, whatever the heck that means. "I couldn't stand up during my meal", he joked. According to Wikipedia, "the leg press is a weight training exercise in which the individual pushes a weight away from them using their legs". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leg_press The article goes on to state that the weight claimed by some people doing this exercise may seem artificially high--much more than 750 kilos. That's because they use only a partial range of motion. Using a full range of motion, the weight being moved is much less and I'm sure Asashoryu is using the full range of motion. If the curls mentioned are bicep curls (there are leg curls as well), they are technique sensitive and it's very easy to "cheat" when doing them. I assume that Asashoryu is doing bicep curls and if he is using the proper technique (again, I'm sure he is), doing three sets using ten repetitions with 160 kilos seems like a reasonable amount for someone of his size and strength. Since bicep curls consist of flexing and extending the lower arm and if Asashoryu is doing them correctly, it also indicates that his elbow must be in pretty good condition because it can successfully handle doing all those repetitions with that much weight. Of course, if the curls mentioned are NOT bicep curls, disregard the above paragraph. :-)

(Eh?)I've seen him doing hammer curls with a pair of 80 pound dumbells, which is impressive in itself. The leg press number sounds OK..... :-/ Edited February 20, 2009 by hidenohana
sekitori 492 Posted February 20, 2009 160 pounds right???? :-) Do you have any idea what kind of feat a curl of 160 kilograms is? (Eh?)I've seen him doing hammer curls with a pair of 80 pound dumbells, which is impressive in itself. No, it's not 160 pounds. It's 160 kilograms which is almost 73 pounds. Since he has done hammer curls in the past using 80 pound dumbells, that sounds about right. And as I mentioned before, successfully curling that amount of weight ten times in each of three sets is a pretty good indication that his elbow seems to be okay. I just wonder what type of curls he's doing. I'm no expert, but I believe that hammer curls with the palms facing inward throughout the exercise are less stressful on the elbows than regular curls with the hands facing forward. At least, that's how it feels to me when I use dumbells that weigh about one third of those used by Asashoryu.
sekitori 492 Posted February 20, 2009 [No, it's not 160 pounds. It's 160 kilograms which is almost 73 pounds. 160kgs is 352 pounds roughly You're correct. I divided 160 by 2.2 instead of multiplying. So much for my metric conversion skills. :-) But. 160 pounds still seems like an enormous amount of weight to curl with one arm, especially by someone who has had elbow problems. Since Asashoryu has used 80 pound dumbbells before, it seems likely that the weight he's currently using is closer to that figure. Using both arms with a barbell, curling 160 pounds seems quite possible.
Sasanishiki 57 Posted February 20, 2009 Kintamayama will be translating from Japanese newspapers so they will be using kilograms. This means that the weight specified is 160 kilos as KTY originally translated. Now, whether or not this is correct reporting, on the other hand, is a different matter. Kintamayama 45,484 Posted February 21, 2009 (edited) Asashouryuu was one of the 1300 guests at Harumafuji's Ozeki promotion party today. Immediately after that, he left for Hawaii. "I just want to take it easy. I intend to do some weight training in Hawaii", he said, obviously in a good mood. He explained that this trip was a promise to his daughter. "Harumafuji is alike a younger brother to me, so I'm really happy. I'm afraid to lose to him, but I hope he will be the next Yokozuna", he added. He had a lot to drink at the party and was swaying, so to speak. "I seemed to have over-drank.. Sorry..", he said, smiling sheepishly. He will return on March 2nd. At the party, he was kindness in the hard crowd: Edited February 21, 2009 by Kintamayama
Kintamayama 45,484 Posted February 22, 2009 (edited) Some papers are having a field day with Asashouryuu's "drunken behavior" at the Amaparty. "I ain't drunk..", he shouted at one of the reporters when asked, swaying about. This was after he himself apologized to some reporters that he may have "drank too much.." When asked when he will be returning from Hawaii, he answered angrily: "I dunno.. Look for me!!." He apparently was switching from "amicably friendly" to "totally pissed (intended)"and vice versa quite quickly. At one point, he zonked a reporter acquaintance on his head playfully, but the reporter said he just looked like a common drunk. The front collar of his hakama seemed to be soiled with sake, which did not add dignity to the wide picture, adds the reporter. "I didn't know he was going to Hawaii.. I just hope he doesn't cause any disturbances..", said a surprised Musashigawa Rijicho. Asa with Rijicho- "Peace, man!" Still not great to soak the front of your kimono or haori collar but it is a much different matter than being drenched to the waist in sake I'd say!
