Day 9 results and day 10 pairings

Recommended Posts

Hakuho managed to beat Baruto in a great yotsu-zumo bout featuring two rikishi of similar strength while Asashoryu went with a more forceful approach, overpowering Harumafuji with a quick yoritaoshi. The two yokozuna are now alone at the top as Tochiozan lost to Tamanoshima. Kotooshu overcame a bad history against Wakanosato with a good yorikiri win to secure an early kachi-koshi and join Tochiozan at one win behind the lead. Tamanoshima is the only rikishi moving to seven wins as Goeido and Kakuryu had surprising losses. Toyohibiki beat Masatsukasa in a bout between two rikishi in danger of demotion to juryo. Koryu is the only other rikishi in high risk of demotion as Yamamotoyama won against Tochinonada for his fifth win.

Shotenro is the sole juryo leader now as he beat makuuchi Koryu while Hakuba had his third consecutive loss and Ushiomaru lost too. Both fell back into an eight rikishi strong pursuer pack. Kotokuni is doing surprisingly well in his juryo debut, beating Daishoumi for his fifth win, while Yotsuguruma, the aging juryo debutant last basho, is slowly slipping down as he 3-6 with a loss to Hoshihikari.

I would call the Hakuho-Baruto match today the best bout of this basho at the moment! Yokozuna had to work hard to keep his clean record.

Looks like the torikumi makers may finally have wised up that it's not a capital offense to do optional exchange bouts before Day 13...
