Maezumo Hatsu 2009 Videos & Results

Most definitely, based on his college performances he was supposed to be the best of the lot... OTOH, Nogami looks extremely promising, and perhaps more mature than most would have anticipated...

Having watched my way through all the bouts again just now...Takarafuji's hesitant tachiai isn't exactly what I expected to see from a good college rikishi. Maybe he just didn't feel like going in harder; his whole sumo seemed pretty lackadaisical to me in more than just one bout. But yeah, Nogami on the other hand...whoah. Very strong in all his bouts, and the way he kept up the pressure on Azumaryu in bout #3 was just excellent. So much for his classmate Takanoiwa being the higher-profile one...

I'd just like to add my voice to the chorus here.

This thread was another terrific example of how this forum continues to go above and beyond my expectations.

Thanks to everyone who contributed!

Tomorrow's news today...unless they've subtly changed the rules again since the last time we had such a big class (outside of Haru basho, I mean), the order on the new banzuke is presumably this:

#1

Picture nicked from Fay (thanks!), identities confirmed via Info-sumo's clip of the ceremony (thanks as well!). The numbers are as in the previous post.

Has anyone else noticed that Azumaryu is at least 60 years old?

I was wondering the same thing when I saw Fay's picture... Only in still images though, I didn't get the same impression watching him on video (his bouts and the ceremony). He does look about ready to do the kanreki in that Tamanoi picture.

Although I'm gutted I missed it, I'm glad Fay managed to capture the moment and that there is video elsewhere. The numbering above them makes the photo look like forensic evidence though (Laughing...)

The new guys made one final appearance on the doyho after all the trophy & sansho presentations. I'd anticipated each of them having a sip of sake, but not what happened next. Here's a video of the gory details.

Is this part of the tournament considered the opposite of a dohyo matsuri? What's its name?

That gyoji almost had a nasty encounter with the dohyo. Luckily there was a wise head on hand who saved him.

Thanks! (I am not worthy...)

On a related note, the crack web team at the Kyokai DB has reduced the basho count for Azumaryu and Takanoiwa to 1 now (same as all the "real" January recruits), so I guess the mandatory sitting-out in November doesn't count as a maezumo basho after all...

Thanks for video (Takamizakura) and newspaper scan (Nishinoshima). What are formalities for new Gyoji to join in ozumo?

I always thought the basho you actually step on the dohyo (be Mae-zumo or Tsukedashi) is your dohyo debut basho but everyone else thought otherwise.

Well, they didn't change the hatsu-dohyo date, that's still November... Anyway, the way this played out in the database entries I strongly suspect the Kyokai itself was simply making it up as they went along. I don't think they really had any kind of plan for how to handle it, but at least they've seemingly ended up with one of the more sensible solutions now.

I think the tournament ending ceremony is called teuchi-shiki 「手打ち式」. And when they lift up the gy
