And what exactly is the question?

Two Komusubi and two Sekiwake, of course. And if you're hinting at a possible Kaio intai, well, the banzuke is already settled, so there'll definitely be five Ozeki.

11 is not good number - 2K, 2S, 5O, 2Y. No conspiracy theories at all! Kaio MUST stay!

(I am not worthy...) I'm not catching anybody! (Sign of approval...) Banzuke is not symmetric - that's all - M rank will loose 1?

My guess: if Ama is Ozeki 3 East, then there will be only Maegashira 16 West (no M16 East) to keep the two sides balanced. Could it be the other way round , that is Ama Ozeki 3 West and only Maegashira 16 East (no West) ?

Both wrong... just look at a big number of former examples.

Ok! O3 wherever & M16E! (Sign of approval...) Was once 3 sekiwakes ( third was 2SW ) and M16E, many other examples too!

Your case implies an odd number of Yokozuna/Ozeki. The rule is: fill east first, and put any surplus sanyaku at west. Maegashira don't matter for balance - they're always east-aligned.

edit: A nice example would be this banzuke.

Ooooops... two mistakes in three lines ! One of the best performances of mine ever ! But I can still improve....

Better not encourage them to really put any surplus sanyaku at west...

Quite intriguing! Was that a one time exception, or should we better have put Doitsuyama on S2W?

I always figured it was a screwup, just like they sometimes couldn't decide whether a single yokozuna sends the third ozeki to east or west (see Nagoya 2004 vs. Haru 2005 and following), but I really have no idea.

How many sanyaku in January? Well :

yokozuna:

Hakuho

Asashoryu

ozeki:

Kotomitsuki

Chiyotaikai

Kotooshu

Kaio

Harumafuji

sekiwake:

Baruto

Aminishiki

komusubi:

Kisenosato

Toyonoshima

Kotoshogiku and Kyokutenho will each probably be placed at maegashira1, Miyabiyama at maegashira2. Under different circumstances it would be justified to promote Kotoshogiku to komusubi. However, with 5 ozeki one would expect only a total of 4 rikishi ranked at sekiwake + komusubi.

So I'll go with 11 in Sanyaku for Hatsu 2009.
