aderechelsea 125 Posted November 26, 2008 what's that? spring horse fuji? it will take some time to get accustomed to it.
Asashosakari 19,667 Posted November 26, 2008 what's that? spring horse fuji? No, it's a (what seems to me) fairly odd reading of the day/sun kanji (also the "ni" in Nihon/Japan). Haru as in Haru basho or Harunoyama is a different one.
Fukurou 534 Posted November 26, 2008 We now have Harumafuji as our Ozeki日馬富士 Does this name have some sort of meaning with Isegahama or the Tatsunami group? I was expecting something with "asahi" in it.
Otokonoyama 2,735 Posted November 26, 2008 (edited) Talking to the press. Mongolian wrestler Ama earned promotion to sumo’s second-highest rank of ozeki Wednesday after a series of strong performances in recent tournaments. The Japan Sumo Association endorsed Ama’s promotion at an executive committee meeting convened after the 24-year-old posted a 13-2 record and finished runner-up following a playoff loss to grand champion and compatriot Hakuho at the Kyushu Grand Sumo Tournament.Wrestling at the third-highest rank of sekiwake, Ama had compiled records of 10-5 and 12-3 in July and September and coupled with the latest showing surpassed the JSA’s loosely set requirement for ozeki promotion of 33 to 34 wins over three consecutive tournaments. Ama made his professional debut in January 2001 and broke into the top makuuchi division in November 2004, having overcome his size disadvantage with fierce training that produced the speed and tenacity to enable him to counter the power and weight of heavier opponents. http://www.japantoday.com/category/sports/...o-join-softbank Edited November 26, 2008 by Otokonoyama

Oshirokita 192 Posted November 26, 2008 sigh, I really got used to the name Ama. I was hoping if he changed shikona that it would be some change of characters but still "Ama". This new name will take some time to grow on me... harumph!
Johnofuji 232 Posted November 26, 2008 spring horse fuji How do you serve it? As Haru maki (spring rolls) or ba sashi (raw horse sashimi)?
Harry 67 Posted November 26, 2008 Some more of the rikishi formerly known as Ama, now Harumafuji or perhaps today's lunch special: horse meat from Mount Fuji! On parade:
Harry 67 Posted November 26, 2008 BTW, can anyone tell me another word, name (shikona, place or otherwise) that has 日 reading as はる? I can't find any. Only other use of 日馬 I've found is 日馬プレス Nichima press ( http://www.nichimapress.com/ ), 日馬ドラマ a drama and 日馬ふれあいフェスティバル a festival. Kusama is the other reading I've seen for 日馬 other than Nichima. Hananotaka 8 Posted November 26, 2008 "Haru" is one of the readings for 日 that are used in names. The "fuji" obviously comes from "Asahifuji". While certainly it does call to mind the famous mountain, keep in mind that the word "fuji" itself means "prosperous gentleman". I like it. Very cunning use of four kanji will insure gyoji cooperation to stay in the "fat lettering" ranks. No gyoji will want to make it harder on the guys writing out the banzuke by letting Harumafuji fall into the maegashira or, God forbid, juryo ranks.
Kintamayama 45,530 Posted November 26, 2008 Well, they explicitly said no "Asahi" kanji to read whatever, and OTH, "fuji" is definitely in, and Ama asked the "horse" to be there, so the last three kanji were no surprise. The first kanji came from nowhere, but no doubt we will hear some explanation as to its merits.

Asameshimae 220 Posted November 26, 2008 What I keep missing is why. If it has been discussed somewhere I am sorry, but why was it deemed necessary that his shikona had to change? I am very curious.

Indeed. I should have clarified that the READING came from nowhere..

Otokonoyama 2,735 Posted November 26, 2008 (edited) 正日-Masaharu 日成=Harushige 日翔=Haruto These are a few men's first names that use the HARU reading for 日. Nichi, Jittsu, Hi, Ka, Aki, Asa, Haru, & Hiru are possible readings for the character. While not especially common, the reading isn't out of nowhere. The character is actually quite commonly used in North Korean names... 金日成, for example. And his spawn, 金正日. Otherwise know as Kim Il-sung, and Kim Jong-il. I came up empty trying to find any and my kanji books don't list haru as a reading for 日 for some reason. Name kanji seem to be the hardest part of the language. Chiyozakura 148 Posted November 26, 2008 I am a little disappointed. I would have prefered a name with history, but it seems these are getting rare in sumo. Only Tamanoshima has a somewhat special name among the current Makuuchi rikishi.
