Adoptee Reports - Aki 08

Recommended Posts

My two adoptees both came through with impressive 5-2 records in Aki.

Hitachigo at Sd71W broke the 3KK/3MK cycle he has been on for the last two years. He started out with a 3-0 record, and added additional wins in his last 2 matches. I think he will advance to about Sd45 for Kyushu. His strength continues to lie in yotsu sumo.

Homarefuji, coming off two consecutive 7-0 yushos in Jonidan and Sandanme, was at a career high of Ms55W. In his first outing against the more experienced makushita rikishi, he started with two wins and ended with three wins. He continues to win using primarily oshi sumo. Kyushu will be only his 5th hon-basho, and he should be facing some tough competition at a mid-makushita rank. I wish him continued success.

An excellent basho for my three adoptees!!

Mizuguchi had slipped into high sandanme after a disastrous 1-6 MK last basho. this time, at Sd5w he was able to turn that result around and record 6-1. His only loss was to Ms60w Yamatofuji on Day 6, but perhaps worryingly half of Mizuguchi's wins came from hatakikomi. He now has over a third of his career wins as hatakikomi!

His stablemate at Kasagayama, Hidenofuji, has been hovering around the lower Makushita ranks for most of the last year. This 5-2 result at Ms49e will be particularly satisfying after he began with a loss. However, he will need to show more consistency to compete with those in mid-makushita in Kyushu.

Takanoyama at Ms28w had his third consecutive 5-2 result as he looks to re-cement himself in mid-makushita. He looks to be making a comeback after having to go kyujo in the middle of the same basho a year ago. Since then he has worked his way back from sandanme, with a 3-4 MK in Osaka as his only blip. This result will push him near to his career best position of Ms15e which he held in Kyushu three years ago.

Lessee...Koryu bounced back strongly from his rough makuuchi debut with 10-5 and will immediately get another shot. :'-( Kyokutaisei had to fight hard for his 4-3 kachikoshi after a 2-3 start, but he made it. :'-( One of my slightly irrational assessments for the prospect-worthiness of a rikishi is whether he follows up a makekoshi with a series of KK that get him to an even higher rank than before, so since he was 2-5 last time he'll have to tack on at least another kachikoshi in Kyushu. And lastly Daiseishin looks set to become my very own persistence adoptee :-( now with maezumo 0-4, and jonokuchi 2-5 and 1-6...I wonder how long he's going to stick it out as a 21-year-old debutant stuck that far down the ranks.

Great Basho for Kyokushuho - He got it. Last Basho's mk must have had a reason.

Hoshizakura and Owaka both had a 3-4...dunno what the problem was. Sorry for that.

Saio is not yet that big but if he developes the way I expect him to, he will be a great one like Kaiho.

1-6 will be 6-1 then. :'-(

He can be a real good one. Hope his Oyakata will be well enough to take good care of him.

Well, not sure this be the right place for this, but I'd like to wish my adoptee Okinoshita a happy 16th birthday. I've decided to adopt him just now, I hope I'm not tresspassing on anyone's property.

Oh, I almost forgot...

Minami: 3-4 - I hope two consecutive MK's are only a minor setback... (Sign of approval...)

Shibuya: 6-1 - YEESSSS!! Well done, Sir!! A 4-3 in November would be awesome, but I fear that the competition will be twice as tough as in Aki, so we'll have to see.

Takanomiya: 1-6 - Just (Clapping wildly...)

Kinunonami: 1-1-5 - He had to withdraw from the tournament, probably due to an injury.

Akinokawa: 4-3 - 2nd KK in a row

Kainomiya: 5-2 - It's about time to score a KK in mid-Jonidan.

Akinoyama: 4-3 - Follow your brother!

And I completely forgot...

Masunofuji, for his first basho in makushita, had a rather promising 3-4. He's still only 20 (and around 105 kg) so I believe he has potential to get higher, although he'll need to bulk up...

I have far too many adoptees (In a state of confusion...), so I'll concentrate this time on two of my favourites.

Chiyoarashi had a great basho, he could beat 5 of his 7 opponents and will make a big jump to upper sandanme. His technique was a bit onesided this time, all wins by oshidashi, but he already showed more.

My other one is Hokazan from Miyagino Beya. He is as hardworking as Chiyoarashi in training. After his 6-1 at Nagoya Basho he had his best rank at Sd 91. He missed his KK this time but he is a big talent, has to gain some more weight and then he will move up the banzuke (Holiday feeling...).

After a good first basho in July (5-2) in jonokuchi, Nagakura (Kokonoe-beya) missed the kachi-koshi with a interesting 3-4. I'm wondering if he got weight or not since I saw him in last May in Kokonoe-beya.

(I'm not against a picture of Nagakura ^^ thaaanks ^^)

Well this one is seriously overdue by several basho. Sorry Boys!!!

[also my general lurking mode can be attributed to way too much work in the freelance waves and the arrival of #2!]

Kainohama becomes KAISHIN

the shikona change sure seems like a last-ditch effort at this point in his career so I seriously hope it can change his flow!

the recap: after his 3rd extended absence including surgery, Kainohama came back weakly as expected into Jonidan maybe a bit too early but eked out his KK with 4-3 in March. However by May he was on track for a yusho in high Jonidan starting 4-0 only to be dogged by a minor reinjury after his 4th. Luckily he was already kk, because as I recall his 4-1-2 represents loss only by fusensho. Even with this injury being minor, I do believe it is hindering his return to former form, as he delivered only 4-3 from low Sandanme in July.

But now finally in Aki as shin-Kaishin we see a 5-2 from Sd73E, finishing with 4 straight! I saw no bouts, but have to imagine he was not in sync with the new shikona for the first 3 matches... Losses in match 1 and 3 were to unremarkable rikishi at or near career high, both by Yorikiri. The 2nd match win sounds cheap as a hatakikomi in contrast to the final 4 wins, where Kaishin seems to have fallen into step with the new moniker, I pray! Though coming against mere mid-sandanme highs Matsunoumi, Hokuoryu, Hanasegawa, and Kosei wins were yorikiri yorikiri oshidashi oshidashi. ;-) Hokuoryu and Kosei were his only KK opponents, both with 4-3, and merely of anecdotal significance his last 2 opponents are both Chinese.

To be honest, only opponent Kosei looks very promising, so lets hope the symbolic wins in low sandanme carry him up along with the symbolic change of shikona. I am surprised that they went with Kaishin, a very "standard fare" shikona for Tomozuna. Perhaps the oyakata feels the naturalized Brazilian will benefit from an infusion of simple tradition. Former career high is Sd20E so I don't imagine he will achieve a new high, but he will certainly be in the position to do so and even break into Makushita for January!

Kaisei

The fast-developing junior Brazilian Kaisei rode into Aki on a 4-basho KK streak for his 4th consecutive basho starting at a new career-high rank. That streak is sadly over with a 2-5 from Ms29w... but looking back to January I cannot say I have been disappointed!!!

6-1 >> 5-2 >> 5-2 >> 4-3 >> 2-5

That is a darned strong trajectory for riding a career-high wave out of mid-low sandanme pushing into solid mid-makushita territory.

At 21, I think we can expect to see Kaisei gunning for sekitori promotion by this time next year. I'm not certain he is ready by then, but what I mean is I expect him to make his first landing on the doorstep in the next 6 basho. I predict Kaisei will wallow in lower makushita for a basho or 3 starting in Kyushu, with middling 3-4s or the reverse, trying to learn what he has absorbed from a 2-5 MK in Aki. But as soon as he can digest the losses, we should see him ready for another run at greatness and searching for his new personal wall on the sekitori border.

(Lifting weights...)

Peace and all my heart to my Boys,

Kaiguma

Yaaaah, great ! Tons and tons of thanks, Martina for those pictures and the German TV subject !!! :-) (Clapping wildly...)

(Sign of approval...) (Showing respect...) ;-)

Maybe he has not yet much weight, but he improved his shoulders and his chest since I discovered him in May. It seems he's getting muscle, at the moment.
