Jonosuke 28 Posted September 28, 2008 * Kaiho Watch (Juryo West 13): 8-7 losing to Ryuo by hikiotoshi * Yamamotoyama Watch (Juryo East 12): 9-6 losing to Wakakoyu by okuridashi Wakakoyu (Makushita East 1, 5-3) over Yamamotoyama by okuridashi ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ (A rare occurrence in Makushita having to compete in eight bouts. Sometimes happens in Jonokuchi when they have odd number of rikishi. A win will count but loss does not. The bout was arranged after a sudden kyujo notice from Tamakasuga who retired today.) "I had lost two straight since I got kachikoshi possibly being released from all the tension so I took it as a good opportunity to get myself back." Onomatsu oyakata (former Sekiwake Masuarao), Wakakoyu's shisho --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (On Wakakoyu bout today) "I told him this bout would be huge for the next basho and told him to do his best." (Wakakoyu to be promoted to Juryo next basho.) Ushiomaru (Juryo West 11 7-8) over Hoshikaze (Makushita West 2, 1-6) by yorikiri ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (Ensuring his stay in Juryo) "I felt perhaps winning yesterday (against Kyokunanka), I could remain up here but I wanted to make sure so I really tried hard today." "I am always late getting revved up and it sure makes me exhausted mentally." Goeido (10-5) losing to Kakizoe by yorikiri, 10.7 sec ---------------------------------------------------------------------- (Getting his second Kanto-sho but losing) "This is where I am still not mature enough. At the moment I just feel a sense of regret." "I have been able to step hard out of tachiai and I find I don't really get hit harder by my opponents that often. I want to add more speed to my sumo and do my best the next basho." Aminishiki (8-7) over Kaio by yorikiri, 4.2 sec ------------------------------------------------------------ (Getting Kachikoshi and a possibility of returning to Sanyaku.) "When Ama-zeki is going well, naturally the level of training sessions go up. I will just have to get him pull me up too." Baruto (8-7) over Kakuryu by tsuridashi, 2.9 sec ----------------------------------------------------------------- (From 2 win and 7 loss, sixth straight win, finally getting in the bout after two tachiai infractions.) "Actually I got so tensed that I felt my legs were shaking. This is the most gratifying kachikoshi I ever had. We were both at 7 win and 7 loss. I wanted to have a quality bout between one man against another." (On sekiwake promotion) "Let's talk about it after the banzuke release." Ama (12-3) over Toyohibiki by yorikiri, 4.4 sec ----------------------------------------------------------------- (Showing after all Toyohibiki is his junior rikishi by patting Toyohihiki's belly a couple of times after the bout,) "I wanted to go with a sumo that leads into the next basho. I realized how significant each and every one of my bouts could be through the 15 days. When you want to win a yusho, you cannot afford to make even a tiny error."" (Falling off the yusho race and losing to Goeido) "Actually I got so upset with myself that I ended up emptying three bottles of tequila last night." "But all I can do now is to work out as hard as I could. I always need to have a sense that I'd never lose to a rikishi ranked below me. I used to feel, 'I hate to lose' before but now it is more like, 'I can't let myself lose'. In the end I will have to focus on my sumo, the Ama Sumo." Isegahama oyakata (former Yokozuna Asahifuji), Ama's shisho ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ (On Ama) "One stops growing once he stops aiming for yokozuna or yusho. The fact that he was in the yusho race till Day 14 and tasted the experience, should give him more self confidence."" Hanaregoma oyakata, Director of Judging ---------------------------------------------------------- (On Ama's ozeki promotion possibility.) "Cleary he has a good chance the next basho. It will become the basho for him to aim for ozeki." (Ama had 10 wins at the Nagoya and won 12 this basho. Generally the promotion bar is set at 33 wins for the past three basho and 11 wins should do it.) (A strong endorsement for Ama ) "He has displayed superb sumo this basho. I can't say exactly the number to qualify but we should take into account the number of basho he has been competing as a sekiwake and his ability as a rikishi. As far as the quality of sumo is concerned whether we are talking about his speedy sumo or good technical skills, I see no problem." Hakuho (14-1) over Kotomitsuki by yorikiri, 1 min 3.7 sec ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- (Giving up an uwate to Kotomitsuki first but then getting into his Hidari uwate form and took care of Kotomitsuki at the end.) "As we had experienced so many things, I felt I needed to fulfill the responsibility as yokozuna clearly. I felt I must make sure to keep focused and do my best through the whole 15 days." "I got the yusho yesterday so I tried to go as hard as I could today. I think the fact I was able to keep the good flow from the Nagoya Basho led to this yusho." (Was told he now has 66 wins this year and if he wins 14 more at the Kyushu, he will tie the most number of wins in a year record with Taiho, Kitanoumi, Chiyonofuji, Takanohana and Asashoryu of 80 wins.) "And you are trying to put more pressure on me again (but smiling)." Musashigawa oyakata, Kyokai chairman ------------------------------------------------------- (On Hakuho) "He is strong, really strong. He will be even getting stronger if he continues to work out." Musashigawa oyakata, Kyokai chairman -------------------------------------------------------- (On the basho after taking over from the former Chairman Kitanoumi just prior to the basho, experiencing rikishi confusion over his tachiai policy and Asashoryu's withdrawal.) "We have such series of incidents so it feels like it went by in a flash. I am realizing how difficult this job (Kyokai Chairman) really is. I must admit there were sleepless nights. I am sure we will have a lot more happenings from now on too (implying of introduction of external members to the Kyokai board and Yaocho court case)." (On his closing address by including a line, "We regret the withdrawal of Yokozuna Asashoryu".) "I was thinking about it from the time he went on kyujo. I was thinking we should express our sincere regret to the fans." (On Asashoryu) "Obviously in a discussion with his shisho if he expresses his wish to receive a treatment in Mongolia, that would be an option. However I also feel it is important for him to submerge himself in 'the environment of other rikishi'. I suspect he may get more anxious as well so even for the dohyo-iri ceremony, he should participate in the Aki Jungyo tour." Asashoryu (at Takasago Beya Senshuraku Launch party) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (Asked if he would be appearing on the Aki Jungyo starting on October 11.) "I am not sure yet. But if I am not fully healed, I may not. I just don't know." (Going back to Mongolia?) "Right now I am not returning there. I will see if I can find a way to get it treated in Japan." (Asked if he saw the Senshuraku.) "No I haven't. Actually I don't even feel like watching it." Takasago oyakata, Asashoryu's shisho -------------------------------------------------------- (On Asahoryu) "I intend to have him appear in all public events (such as Tokitsukaze Oyakata Retirement Ceremonial Sumo Tournament). I will have him perform at least the dohyo-iri. As for him participating in the Jungyo, if the progress is not going as well as it should then I will think about it." Katsuji Ebisawa, Yokozuna Deliberation Committee Chairman --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (On Asashoryu) "If he happens to withdraw from the next basho then clearly we need to consider his retirement. What we are saying is he should not come back in half-way if he was not fully prepared to participate. If his injury is not healed then he can take the whole basho off. That should be no problem." Yusho ------ Juryo (12-3): over Wakakirin (Juryo East 4, 6-9) by hatakikomi. Aran West 6, Mihogaseki Beya. Real name: GABARAEV Alan from Russia, 24 years old. 187 cm. 141 kg. Dohyo debut: 2007 Hatsu Basho. Juryo debut: 2008 Nagoya Basho. Favorite: Migi-yotsu, yori, oshi. "This is simply the best. I became the only one remaining Russian (sekitori) here so I did my very best." (On a possibility of Makuuchi promotion) "I want to face Ama-zeki soon." Sandanme (7-0): over Kamei of Kise Beya in the Yusho Kettei-sen. Yamashita West 81, Kise Beya. Real name: Hiroshi Yamashita from Kagoshima Prefecture. 23 years old. 173 cm, 160 kg. Dohyo debut: 2008 Hatsu Basho. Favorite: Tsuki, oshi. "I never imagined it would go this well to this point. My immediate goal is be like my senior at college (Nihon University), Ichihara-zeki. To make my Tsuppari more effective, I will be trying to get more training sessions to step harder and forward more." Sansho ---------- Shukun-sho: Ama East Sekiwake 12-3 Real name: DAVAANYAM Byambadorj from Mongolia. Isegahama Beya. Dohyo debut: 2001 Hatsu Basho. 24 years old, 185 cm, 129 kg. Gino-sho: None. Tamakasuga ---------------- (Retired officially and was approved to take Tateyama Toshiyori by the Kyokai as of today to coach Kataonami Beya rikishi.) "I have no regret of leaving. Actually I consider myself a happy man for being able to continue competing for this long." (After his Day 14 win against Mokonami making his record to 6 win 8 loss, he went himself to ask for kyujo to Judges Group as they make up the next day's banzuke.) "Even prior to the basho I was determined to leave if I wasn't able to have a satisfactory result. I found I couldn't hit hard and I couldn't stay in the dohyo well. And this morning I felt certain I wanted to retire." (Debuting at the 1994 Hatsu Basho after graduating from Chuo University as a Makushita Tsukedashi, in the same generation as other college Tsukedashi standouts as Musoyama (current Fujishima oyakata) and Tosanoumi but not was as well known.) "I was never a type of rikishi others noticed. My goal was to catch up to their progress. I think having had opportunities to compete on the same dohyo with them was my fondest memory." "Now I want to teach junior rikishi that in each bout they should not to take anything for granted and how important to work hard and persevere." The Kyokai announced with the retirement of Tamakasuga and his succession as Tateyama oyakata, former Ozutsu has resigned from the Kyokai. In addition former Makuuchi Kinkaiyama has switched from Sekinoto to Toshiyori Inagawa. Sekinoto Toshiyori Myoseki was acquited by Makuuchi Iwakiyama in June. ------------ The total number of Kensho banners this basho was 777, the fewest in the last three years for a Tokyo Basho where they were averaging around 1,000. The number of Kensho banners were over 1,000 three consecutive basho since this year's Hatsu Basho but it dipped to 949 in the Nagoya Basho. This is the first time since 2004 Natsu Basho when the number of Kensho banners marked below 800 when it had 685. ------------- In their upcoming Yaocho court case, Weekly Shukan Gendai announced they would bring in former Makuuchi Wakanoho as one of their witnesses. Wakanoho indicated he would hold a press conference on September 29. Wakanoho is currently suing the Kyokai claiming his dismissal was too harsh. Yokozuna Asashoryu is scheduled to make an appearance in the court on October 3.
Jakusotsu 6,401 Posted September 28, 2008 Hakuho (14-1) over Kotomitsuki by yorikiri, 1 min 3.7 sec---------------------------------------------------------------------------- (Was told he now has 66 wins this year and if he wins 14 more at the Kyushu, he will tie the most number of wins in a year record with Taiho, Kitanoumi, Chiyonofuji, Takanohana and Asashoryu of 80 wins.) Huh? :-) Asashoryu is the sole record holder with 84 wins in 2005. Thanks, Jonosuke, as always, for making our basho more enjoyable! (Showing respect...) Kintamayama 47,342 Posted September 28, 2008 More: Futenou, his name popping up as a candidate for the ginosho, but it didn't happen: "It's a pity, but it's the first time in three years that I had 11 wins so I'm really happy. I'll be aiming for a sansho as a joi!" Kitataiki, a makekoshi in his first Makuuchi basho: "The atmosphere and tension in Makuuchi is different. It's been a good lesson". Tamanoshima, regarding the retirement of his elder Tamakasuga : "I saw his face and he seemed refreshed. It's the best way for a rikishi to retire.. I respect his attitude of not giving up till the very end". Kisenosato, beating Hakuhou notwithstanding, can't get more than six wins for the second straight basho: "There really was nothing good about it.. I'll try to feel like a new recruit and feel like I'm starting from scratch next basho.." Aminishiki, hoping to return to Sanyaku next basho: "I wonder how it will pan out. In the mean time, it's good that I got my 8 wins.." Kotooushuu, getting his kachikoshi on senshuraku: "The difference between winning and losing is big. I am doing keiko seriously. I'd like the keiko's quality to manifest itself during the basho.." Kotomitsuki, who was in the yusho race with Hakuhou for most of the basho, after putting up a good fight today: "I did the best I could. At the very least, I wanted to show perseverance.." Jokkamura 4 Posted September 28, 2008 ...Tamakasuga ---------------- ... "I was never a type of rikishi others noticed. My goal was to catch up to their progress. I think having had opportunities to compete on the same dohyo with them was my fondest memory." ... He was there when I started watching Sumo, he became Sekiwake and stayed in the upper Maegashira ranks for a very long time. So I really noticed him and I would never have thought of him as an unnoticed rikishi. (From my point of view it's much more difficult to stay there as being Ozeki and having the chance of being kadoban from time to time.) So thanks, Tamakasuga, and good luck for the future!
