Rikishi's weight

Recommended Posts

Can somebody please let me know whether there is a place where rikishi's weights are recorded ? I think I remember Asashoryu was given at 139 kg when I first noticed him, and now I read 152 kg ! It would be interesting for me to see how long it took him to gain such a weight, exspecially in connection with his "fat mass percentage" matter that was discussed some days ago, and to compare his growth to the others' ones . Thanks.

here you can see how his weight evolved through the years

Thank you very much. I read at www.scgroup.com/sumo his weight is 152 kg. Have you got any idea where this number comes out from ? I thought that rikishi's are officially weighted once a year. Is that correct ? Are there any unofficial data taken during the year ? Thanks.

Presumably from the official profile, but I have no idea how often the scgroup admin updates his data. The Kyokai itself posts new weights for all sekitori before every Tokyo basho (but doesn't archive them).

Thank you too. But the mistery grows bigger: the official profile says 147kg ! Not that the thing is really important in itself; but it becomes hard to discuss about a possible uncontrolled weight increase if three different sources give three different figures ! I mean: case a. an increase from 139 to 152 within 6 months is a lot - case b. an increase from 142 to 148 within 5 years can easily depend on aging. In the latter case it probably might not affect a rikishi's speed; in the former it would for sure! And in that case it might mean an effort to move from a sumo based on speed to a sumo based on power, effort that for instance in Asashoryu's case should be considered unsuccessful.
