昭和五十八太郎 0 Posted September 16, 2008 Just imagine how happy Akinoshima was, with 14 Kinboshi under his belt by 1992, and staying in the top ranks till 2003. With 40k per tournament (240k per annum) for 11 years. You do the math. Although I am sure that in my childish calculations I'm omitting that it wasn't always that kind of a cash sum, but it would've still given him substantial cash. :)

For comparison Kaio, with bonuses based on 5 career yusho and and "only" 6 kinboshi, stands at 90,776,000 total right now, and Asashoryu at 85,742,000. There we go, beating giants can bring in some nice cash. Although I didn't realize it was just under 85 million! That is pretty impressive. Surely he must be the richest man who didn't win a ton of tournaments. :-P

Surely he must be the richest man who didn't win a ton of tournaments. (Sign of approval...) Yes, he's the all-time record holder in accumulating bonus points (293.5 at the end of his career) without a single makuuchi yusho, so given his extremely long career he is in all likelihood also the one to earn the most bonus money. (Credit where it's due: I got that fact from the hosho-kin section on Takayama's site.)
Jejima 1,126 Posted September 17, 2008 (edited) Just to be complete, Akinoshima ended up with 16 career kinboshis. After the 14 mentioned above, he had one in 1993, and his last in 1999. He retired in 2003, so those last two added a bit to his retirement fund too. Maybe it is a shame that he came from the same heya as Yokozunas Wakanohana and Takanohana, otherwise he might have been able to add some more to his tally?
