I believe they need all who are willing to be trained as a Tokoyama these days.

I'm willing :-) How do I apply?

I recall Tomozuna doesn't have one. But then there are a dozen or so more heya to choose from. Go apply and expect to spend the next 20 years or so without having enough income to support your family and work long hours at the heya but free chanko.

He does have the hair, though..

Musashigawa Rijicho but lately Yokozuna Asashouryuu and Sekiwake Ama are conspicuous in their not putting down their hands, and there were many fans complaining to the Kyokai about this. "Lately, we're seeing a lot of sloppy tachi-eyes, some of them without putting the hands down at all. If the hands are not down, it's a do-over", he ordered.

Well we already muckygawa doesn't like Asashoryu, he sure has the Yokozuna in his sights, nice bit of singling out along with a fellow Mongolian when there are far more obvious tachiai felons about, (as noted by the fine members of this forums. )

I am sure that if we looked at some archive footage of the wrestler "Mienoumi" I am pretty sure we would find some pretty sloppy looking tachiai.....nothing like a retired hypocrite.

For all his failings I liked Kitanoumi - he was pretty much a WYSIWYG guy. I don't trust the new Richijo.

It was suggested to split the matta discussion. I have created a new topic on "Honbasho Talk".

Musashigawa is relentless. Today, he called Takanohana and Takasago Oyakatas to his office and scolded them- Takanohana for not calling the mattas and Takasago for his deshi's behavior and a demand he start showing leadership. To Takanohana he said: "The older members of the judging department are calling the mattas, so you have to be more careful and note that". To Takasago: "Your deshi is a Yokozuna and as such is supposed to set an example for all rikishi. You should firmly educate him!".

"I didn't say a word", said Takanohana.

Musashigawa is relentless. ...

One could get the impression, that he doesn't seek re-election.

I didn't realize the members of this forum will get to vote...

Maybe my english is too bad, but I don't get the connection between your posting and mine. (In jonokuchi...)

I was referring to the treatment of the other oyakata by Musashigawa.

Well, that's two oyakata...one who is probably seen as a bit of a loose cannon (Takanohana) and one who is widely regarded to be responsible for Asashoryu's failure to adjust to the expectations placed on him (Takasago). I doubt the other 100+ oyakata will lose much sleep over Musashigawa playing hardball with these two, hence my (sarcastic, I admit) comment that you must be thinking of some other voting population that won't want to re-elect him.

Musashigawa continues to be relentless. Today, he called Onomatsu Oyakata to his office and scolded him - for his deshi's loose mawashi.

"I didn't say a word," said Onomatsu. But he returned to the heya full of fierceness, and first deshi he encountered was the unlucky Kenou. Our very own relentless reporter Fay happened to witness the results of the incident...

The rijicho did not hear Asashouryuu's testimony, and was filled in by Tomozuna Oyakata who did."I believe his innocence. We are proceeding full steam ahead", he said, somewhat laconically.

AFAIK, some years ago the Kyokai set a salary scale that did in fact allow yobidashi, tokoyama et al. to live decently. In the old days yobidashi made extra money by hawking magazines and such.

But outside of basho time, the tokoyama I know don't have long working hours; they only arrive at the heya as asageiko is ending, and once they have dressed everyone's hair, the rest of the day is theirs. During basho, of course, they are also working in the KK shitakubeya; but not necessarily everyone is there, and it happens that a tokoyama may be asked to do the hair of a man outside his own heya.

Slightly related - in my interview with Hideo san published last week, he said one of the problems facing younger yobidashi is that they don't have any sponsors. Apparently, it used to be customary for yobidashi to have tanimachi (sponsorship clubs) that supplemented their income. Hideo says he still has some patrons, but young yobidashi only get one-tenth of the sponsorship he got at their age...
