Ouchiyama???

He was a giant of a man (202 cm, 152 kg); especially at the time.

Originally the tsuriyane was kept high by four poles in the corners. When TV broadcasts began, the tsuriyane was decided to be hung from the ceiling to prevent the poles covering parts of dohyo from TV audience. The poles (shihon-bashira) were sort of symbolically replaced by the four differently coloured fusa. Originally the lowest part of these were set at the height of 197 cm but since Ouchiyama could have lost his bout simply by touching a fusa with his mage, they were raised to 212 cm.

I don't remember whether Ouchiyama actually lost any of his bouts this way. Might have...

shihon-bashira
, pillars supporting tsuriyane until September 1952; since 1858 those were decorated using same colors as busa are coloured nowadays, see aka-busa, ao-busa, kuro-busa, shiro-busa, mizuhikimaku, agemaki

Very interesting information: a lot more than I expected.  His head hitting the ceiling = a real ouch  :-)

Was his tattoo removed because he was required to remove it?

Time to post some nice pictures again!

Azumazeki-oyakata looking extremely cuddly, despite his age. :D

Azumazeki1.jpg

Dejima, looking... words fail me.

Toki washing Haya's hair.

Hokutoriki enjoying some music during jungyo. Nice chin-rest, and is that parctice sheet with his shikona under his arm?

Hriki.jpg

Kotomitsuki, looking incredibly and uncharactheristicly cute.

I don't know how explicitly tattoos are asked to be removed but yes, a rikishi should not wear tattoos. I've understood that in Japan they have this unfortunate connotation of yakuza, organized crime.

I've been thinking of getting my shikona tattooed... :-)

A very good Friday afternoon to all of you working Mon-Fri, 9-17 jobs. Since I'll be dropping to work tomorrow to start some scans (our poor instruments are so booked during summer semesters), I've decided to postpone some other work until tomorrow, and so am using this opportunity to (what else?) post more pictures and relax. A load of Queen mp3s playing in the background, work on a University doesn't get better than this. ;)

In sumo magasines, banzuke are often illustrated by thematic pictures of rikishi (doing shiko, or in yukata, or in kesho-mawashi). One banzuke had photos of rikishi waiting ringside for their bouts. The faces are mostly the same: passive, in some other world planning their bout, or possibly watching the current bout with professional interest. Only Buyuzan, whose face can't hide anything, deserved posting with his look of abject terror. :-)

Buyuzan.jpg

Speaking of Buyuzan, he joins Tenho and K'waka in the  victims of dress-the-baby-up syndrome club:

Tochinohana finding the summer heat to hot to handle:

Kotoinazuma with his children. All I can say is  :-0  My compliments to mrs. Kotoinazuma!

Inazuma_brood.jpg

And finaly, Asashoryu and Kyokutenho in their less famous days, but looking very... delectable.

I think we had one on Kotoryu, probably from the same occasion, but I really like this one I stumbled upon on the net. Apologize if it's already been found here earlier. Akebono obviously, but I don't know who the other one is.

akebono.jpg

Apropos Akebono. Some of you might not have visited this site, which have quite a few old Akebono pics, especially from his danpatsu-shiki. It's worth clicking thorough the whole danpatsu-shiki methinks. Don't miss a cranky-looking Asashoryu getting his hair done (Punk rocker...)

Asanowaka dozing of - jungyo again. Profile in the foreground unidentified.

Kaio posing with a retiring Tomozuna-beya yobidashi:

Kaio&yobidashi.jpg

(Kaio really likes that Lion-King keshomawashi)

A blast from the past: Ganyu and Wakanojo playing chinese chess (methinks) during summer jungyo. Judging from his grin, Wakanojo seems to be winning. Comatose rikishi in the background unidentified, alas.

And with Korean jungy aproaching, here's Kasugao:

Ganyu_Wakanojo.jpg

I'd say it's shogi rather than xianggi. Judging from the pieces, the game is still in its early stages. Ganyu is about to lose a knight, isn't he?

While I'm at it, might I humbly request some Takanonami pictures...?

How come this thread was cut off at 6 pages?  It was up to page 10 before as I recall.  :-D  :-P

Because Rijicho changed the number of posts per page to 25 from 15 when the forum changed.

Yes, I did. Go see My Controls and then Board Settings to adjust the number to your liking. I'd like to ask everyone reading this to get acquainted with the personal settings possibilities the new script provides.
