Taka 33 Posted October 7, 2003 (edited) Hello my name is Stefan. I'm a 24 year old male from Denmark. Oh and i love sumo (Applauding...) I watched it for the first time in 98 or was it 99 when all the top rikishi visited Paris and competed in a couple of exhibition tournaments at the Bercy arena. It was broadcasted by Eurosport. And with some help from Syd Hoare i got hooked right away. And ever since that the more i've learned about it (still got a lot to learn though :-) ) and the more i watched, the more fascinated i became! Eurosport of course began broadcasting Bashos shortly after and i've watched everyone of them.. My favorite rikishi? I was obsessed with Takanohana. He had a lot to do with me being drawed to Sumo. I know a lot of japanese prefered his more easygoing and perhaps more likeable brother Wakanohana but there was something about Takanohana that appealed to me. For a westener or most certainly for me Takanohana had an aura about him, a charisma and personality that fitted my somewhat abstract idea of how a "true" or a great Yokozuna should be like. Almost a god like figure is a description i have heard. Likely some people will disagree with this but it was for a large part what got me fascinated. Later when i also learned to appreciate his exceptional belt sumo. His amazing balance and everything else, the more fan i became.................... Now of course he is retired :-( But my interest for sumo lives on :-) Actually i had my doubts joining this board! Because i'm so dependent on Eurosport i try to avoid the Basho results like it's the plague! I'm not always succesful though, for an example i'm aware who wins the next one ;-) But how do others in the same situation handle this? Learn to live with it? I'm not sure............ If there is anything i need to know about this board before i start posting please let me know (Eh?) Edited October 7, 2003 by Taka
Taka 33 Posted October 7, 2003 (edited) (Eh?) Ok i've done some reading of various threads and it seems ive been missing out on a lot! Streams of Bashos? (on the official site?) Videos already out the following day? Who needs ******** Eurosport then (Applauding...) I need info and some links guys! Please :-) Edited October 7, 2003 by Taka
Yubiquitoyama 4 Posted October 7, 2003 (edited) Hello my name is Stefan. I'm a 24 year old male from Denmark. Oh and i love sumo :-( Welcome to the Forum Stefan! (Sign of approval) It's a great name you have there :-D (Yes, I'm also a Stefan... ;-) ) Nice to see a Dane here. There are a few Swedes here including myself and some Finns, including the forum administrator Kotoseiya, but you are probably the first Dane here! (Eh?) (Please Rijicho, a Danish flag ;-) ) I watched it for the first time in 98 or was it 99 when all the top rikishi visited Paris and competed in a couple of exhibition tournaments at the Bercy arena. It was broadcasted by Eurosport. I remember the Paris koen. I would really like to see it again, partly because I have a definite recollection of Kotonishiki trying an ippon-zeoi (without winning the match), but unfortunately they stopped to send it (although it took some time :-D ). Anyway, I think Eurosport actually started sending the basho as early as 96. I remember for example Tochiazuma's Makunouchi debut (Kyushu basho 1996, the one with the 5-man playoff won by Musashimaru) being sent on Eurosport. Actually i had my doubts joining this board! Because i'm so dependent on Eurosport i try to avoid the Basho results like it's the plague! I'm not always succesful though, for an example i'm aware who wins the next one ;-) But how do others in the same situation handle this? Learn to live with it?I'm not sure............ Well, many of us have stopped trying, or never started... Other possibilites include to seeing the basho live on the webstream provided by NHK at the official sumo page you have undoubtedly visited: http://www.sumo.or.jp/eng/index.php The actual stream will be available on basho days between 16 and 18 Japanese time (currently it seems they only send the Makunouchi matches) from: http://www.sumo.or.jp/eng/basho/relay/eizo2.html (Applauding...) Many of the Makunouchi matches are also put on the net by Dale Carlson, a saint active on the English Sumo Mailing list who have saved many of us when we can't watch the live stream: http://www.banzuke.com/~movies/ :-) If there is anything i need to know about this board before i start posting please let me know :-) Not really... Rijicho (that is, the administrator of this Forum, posting as "Rijicho" when on administrative duty, and as "Kotoseiya Yuichi" otherwise) probably want you to read the forum rules at least once before starting, but basically they just say you shouldn't be intentionally bad... : http://www.sumoforum.net/rules.html Welcome again. Just start posting! B-) Edited October 7, 2003 by Yubiquitoyama

Taka 33 Posted October 7, 2003 (edited) Thanks a lot ;-) Obviously i'm not very good with years. It was of course earlier than that (Eh?) I'm driving myself crazy right now trying to remember which one was my first Basho :-) (Just do not get it...) (Applauding...) Kotoseiya Yuichi 3 Posted October 7, 2003 Yay! A Dane! I've seen Danish visitors in the logs but you're probably the first one to register as a member. :-) (That cross looks a bit too thin... Is it?) Yes, basically the rules I'd like all registering members to read. Unfortunately there exist links that point straight to the forum page. Should one follow such a link, he/she might never visit the rules page as is intended. Actually, I need to fix that as well in the next update... Well, anyway, nice to see you here! (Applauding...) Zenjimoto 39 Posted October 8, 2003 Welcome, Taka! Indeed good to see another flag represented. Yes, I think you will find that following the basho over the internet might be just as good as waiting for the condensed Eurosport version much much later :-) Wishing you lots of fun here, and of course, no welcome from me would be complete with an invitation to join the numerous sumo games that are out there, starting with next basho... it will be good to see the Danish flag represented there as well, you would be the FIRST one indeed! (Applauding...) Find the two games I administer at http://www.sekitori.com ! Cheers Zenjimoto

Exil 301 Posted October 8, 2003 Hey, another Takanohana fan. (Applauding...) Pleased to meet you. (Eh?) Actually i had my doubts joining this board! Because i'm so dependent on Eurosport i try to avoid the Basho results like it's the plague! I'm not always succesful though, for an example i'm aware who wins the next one ;-) But how do others in the same situation handle this? Learn to live with it? Once you start playing sumo games you can't live without real-time results. :-( Wishing you lots of fun here, and of course, no welcome from me would be complete with an invitation to join the numerous sumo games that are out there, starting with next basho... it will be good to see the Danish flag represented there as well, you would be the FIRST one indeed! I think there's someone from Denmark playing the Juryo game. Many of the Makunouchi matches are also put on the net by Dale Carlson, a saint active on the English Sumo Mailing list who have saved many of us when we can't watch the live stream:http://www.banzuke.com/~movies/ :-) Also, if you're interested, some lower division videos. Zenjimoto 39 Posted October 8, 2003 I think there's someone from Denmark playing the Juryo game. Yeah, but he is actually a German who lives close to Denmark, and who plays some other games for Germany, so he doesn't count as a true Dane in my book, just like Kofuji doesn't count as a real United Arab Emiratian! :-) Cheers Z. Fujisan 512 Posted October 8, 2003 (edited) Hi Taka, welcome aboard- Chuck your salt in,slap your belt a few times, then glare at your opponent Takanohana style and finally join the fray. Two things- I remember when I first saw Takanohana in the late 90s thinking what an arrogant wrestler he was and didnt like him much but when I found out he had won 22 basho my attitude changed, after all you cant argue with that great record-Im sorry he retired thats for sure,we lost one of the greats. If you love Sumo I cant begin to say how much you should try the Sumo games, they enhance your love by giving you your own stake in the matches-Apart from those mentioned may I reccomend 'Bench sumo, chaingang and Rotosumo-'You might be best only starting with one or two and building them up in subsequent bashos but there is over 20 great games to choose from. Onnagumo 4 Posted October 8, 2003 [Anyway, I think Eurosport actually started sending the basho as early as 96. I think it was even earlier, 1995. I know because Eurosport first got me hooked on sumo in that year, and then our cable company stopped showing Eurosport in 1996 (Eh?) Since we weren't connected to the Internet at home yet, I had to wait everyday to hear the results from my husband when he came home from work..... Boy, was I glad they started showing it again later. But why did they have to wait until AFTER Nagoya basho 1996 :-) ;-) Welcome to the forum, Taka-zeki! I hope you're going to enjoy it here as much as I do. This forum rocks! (Applauding...)
Taka 33 Posted October 8, 2003 What a great photograph of Kotonowaka that is! Looking much forward to it. I at least like to think that i'm pretty good at predicting bouts! But we will see (I am not worthy...)
Yoavoshimaru 0 Posted October 8, 2003 Welcome to the jungle (I am not worthy...) Takanohana was cool. Denmark is cool -- I had a friend from there in school. Having another Stefan aboard is also cool (I am not worthy...)
Onnagumo 4 Posted October 8, 2003 What a great photograph of Kotonowaka that is! Yes indeed it is! And you should see it full size (I am not worthy...) (Heart), check the "Some more pictures" thread in Ozumo Discussions. This kind of pics is exactly the reason why I hope that thread will go on for years (I am not worthy...) Onnagumo 4 Posted October 8, 2003 I'm sorry, Taka-zeki, but the picture wasn't in the "Some more pictures" thread. It was in another thread in January http://www.sumoforum.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=246&st=0 , but I just checked it, it isn't visible anymore. But of course I saved it for myself (I am not worthy...)

Kotoseiya Yuichi 3 Posted October 26, 2003 It's still not too late to enter to any of the games although with Guess The Banzuke you have only hours to spare. 18.00 CET today is the deadline. Try it! It's cool! Other games have their deadlines just before the basho starts, Bench Sumo a bit earlier. www.sumogames.com is the server you're interested in (whenever it happens to work again)... Taka 33 Posted October 26, 2003 (edited) with Guess The Banzuke you have only hours to spare. 18.00 CET today is the deadline. Try it! I just did! But that was tough! I don't expect to do well in that at all. I definetely need more experience before I can compete in that game. So the reason that I couldn't enter the http://www.sekitori.com was not that I was late but that I was early :-| That's great then cause I thought I missed it (Sigh...) :-/ Edited October 26, 2003 by Taka
