jump to 5.35 for the start - and at 6.05 it looks like he gets an earful from the head shimpan.

Asashoryu just doesn't accept a victory unless the opponent's lying in a puddle of blood 20 meters away from the dohyo.

Asashoryu overheating :D

Guess he wanted to show Hakuho who the real master is.

Did you see Asa and Hakuho today? Black yokozuna against white yokozuna. :-/ Oh, such a sweet topic to discuss for sumo fans and Japanese media. ;-) Another reason for sumo association to criticize Asa for bad behavior and maybe to suspend him from participating at the next basho. (Sigh...). Any ideas? (Eh?)

That left a bit of a bad taste in my mouth actually. Rikishi just aren't supposed to do that kind of thing. I don't think Hakuho should have responded in the way he did either.

I believe both Yokozunas were annoyed by the fact they lost so many bouts this basho. Especially Asa...

Now he wants to prove to the whole world he is still strong by beating the other yokozuna. But it seems he involved too much agression in this. (Applauding...)

Quite stupid of him if you ask me. But I guess that is his way of playing the game.

I bet Dorjoo will kick Davaa's ass if they fight in the street. (Applauding...) Anyway Asashoryu and Hakuho will not hear any good comments on YDC meeting

I don't see what the big deal is. Asashoryu didn't expect Hakuho to fall so quickly, and was in the midst of continuing his attack and couldn't stop himself. This kind of thing happens several times a day (usually when a rikishi keeps pushing after the opponent is already off of the dohyo), and wouldn't have even warranted mention were it not for Hakuho's overdramatic stink-eye after losing.

I don't agree. I think he knew very well what he was doing; it was a deliberate, petulant shove after the bout was clearly over.

bit of niggle between 2 blokes who had pretty poor bashos and failed to live up to expectations. Asa often has brain farts and gets carried away much to the chagrin of the YDC NSK and sumo aficionados. Silly stuff and once again failing to remember the 'hinkaku', yes that old chestnut again.

I think it was deliberate but more of a surprise that Hak went down so easily. It was more of a, "I wanted to put on more of a show than that!" shove of frustration with senshuuraku and Natsu basho as a whole. After all the buildup of an expected yokozuna showdown for the yusho on senshuuraku it instead was the two of them batting for the jun-yusho with the yusho already decided which is pretty anti-climatic.

I'm trying to remember... wasn't there some bad blood (or at least not "good blood") between Hakuho and Asashoryu, or perhaps their families back in Mongolia - maybe before either of them started pro sumo in Japan?

asa and hakuho playing for kotooshu, like in the old roman empire a show infront of the imperor...

sounds interesting... who could expect this?

The pause before the shove makes it look pretty malicious to me. It looks like Asa knew exactly what he was doing.

I agree. It happened before and this was just a continuation of attack with overreaction from Hakuho. But Asa is the guilty person as usual.

Just because it happened before is no excuse for this type of behavior, especially by yokozuna.

And especially considering it was done by two yokozuna on the last bout of the last day of basho. It wasn't deserving for the last day and worthy of yokozuna sumo. I have no doubt they would hear some harsh words from YDC members and possibly warnings to their shisho.

Asashoryu has done it before and in a way it could be interpreted as a move he couldn't stop at the end. But the problem with him is that he does this so often that many observers believe it was purely intentional.

Anyway it only got much ugly because Hakuho retaliated. It was his shoulder push against Asashoryu that was clearly intentional that could have triggered something much worse.

I understand they have been injured and their records were not much to speak of for a yokozuna but that is again no excuse. Having a class must be a definite asset for yokozuna. Hakuho has been going rather downhill since his last yusho as his training level has gone down and his conduct mirroring close to the bad Asashoryu behavior.

I was not surprised by Asashoryu's fierce aftershove. But I could see why Hakuho could have reacted the way he did.Losing,he may have relaxed somewhat. The extra push by Asashoryu may have somehow 'tweaked' Hakuho's injured ankle.Just a thought...

I thought they were almost "friends" before Hakuho grew up so rapidly. I had read that in a basho of some years ago Hakuho had waited for Asashoryu in the hanamichi to give him a high five after having beaten Hokutoriki on senshuraku, so giving Asashoryu the pass for a ketteisen. And that Hakuho was sometimes a guest for dinner at Asashoryu's home with Asashoryu's wife cooking. Was that true ? No wonder that the relationship changed when Hakuho became a menace for Asashoryu's dominance !

A total non-issue. Rikishi -- at least those with pride and a burning desire to win -- are so wound up at the tachiai, that the adrenalin is flowing bigtime. The wimpification of Sumo since the Waka-Taka jidai is really sad. You will see a lot more extra-curriicular activity in matches during the Showa era. Back then, they didn't even bother to put their hands on the dohyo at tachiai -- they just ran at each other and let 'er rip. Now, that was Sumo...

You will also notice that as Asa returned to the shitaku beya, the crowd runs to wish him well and touch him. Like it or not, he is still the most popular rikishi with the common people -- by far. Personally. I like him -- a lot.

Just realised how much this basho mirrors Hakuho's first as a yokozuna. Winning streak ended on Day 10, two subsequent losses to ozeki putting him out of title contention and then a loss to Asashoryu on the final day.
