Introducing myself briefly..

Recommended Posts

I live in Southern Finland and have been following sumo for a couple of years now, enjoying it very much. I owe it to Eurosport since they are the reason I discovered sumo by in the first place. It looked very interesting and soon I started following it fanatically.

I was 17 years old when I first registered to sumoforum.com, now I'm 18. I guess there aren't many members under 20 here?

I played my first "sumo game" this Aki basho, name was Thomashimaru, got 8-7. I will play in the future also.

Other hobbies I have is "bodybuilding" or just lifting weights, I also contribute to the forums at bodybuilding.com. When I was 17 I benched my record, 105kg and aiming higher. Not for a while though. ;-)

This was briefly :-P

Well Tummpi I was gonna say welcome aboard but since you seem to have been here longer than me,thats not really appropriate.

Its nice to hear your story though-

Thomashimaru right?

I saw your name in the bench sumo line up,cant remember how you scored though.

Good luck next basho, maybe we will meet on the bench sumo dohyo.

Thanks Fujisan! I didn't realize I have registered before you, it just seems that you and your wolf have always been here!

Yes, the benchsumo, I was in it, but I kinda screwed it up... I had the same lineup from the start to the end, so I'm surprised if I got any wins. I didn't really have time to get familiar with the rules.. I had my (what's the English word?) ylioppilaskirjoitukset. (Maybe Kotoseiya or some other Finn can translate that?)

But next time I will get zensho! ;-) At least I will be active. Where do you find the results in benchsumo by the way?

I was also in "sumogame" at japanguide.com, that's where I got my kk (8-7).

Its probably cos I post so regular that I seem to have been around forever but my posts are nothing compared to Yoavoshimaru who joined after me and has already posted over 900 messages-I keep having weeks offline though.

I checked your score for bench sumo and you went 7-8,not bad since you stayed with the same line up-thats better than I did at my first basho and because of a large number of Kyujo rikishi you'll be moving up the banzuke for the next basho.

If you want to get the scores you need to do 1 of 3 things.

1/ Join the bench sumo mailing list and you will get the scores sent to your email address.

2/Log in at the site and click on "line ups and results."

3/Click on "Archives" on the site and then click on the "ML(mailing list) archives"

Option 3 will give you access to all the results since bench sumo began starting from the most recent backwards.

Hope that helps-Any problems Email BS rijicho Jeijima he will be only too pleased to help.

Hi Thomashimaru, and thenks for the intro :) Another Finn in the sumogames, and much needed to take some of the strain off the BIG THREE Kaikitsune, Kotoseiya and Hakajusakari (In a state of confusion...) I wish there were more Finns playing my two games... be sure to join in next basho! (Going kyujo...)

Cheers

Be aware that you will get 400-500 messages during a hon-basho month if you choose alternative 1. But hey, that's what mail folder filters are for. (In a state of confusion...)

In order to change your daily lineup, just login at www.benchsumo.com and click "Daily Entry Form". The form is very easy to use - you'll figure it out once you get there.

I believe the best translation would be

baccalaureate

\Bac"ca*lau"re*ate\, n. [NL. baccalaureatus, fr.LL. baccalaureus a bachelor of arts, fr. baccalarius, but as if fr L. bacca lauri bayberry, from the practice of the bachelor's wearing a garland of bayberries. See Bachelor.] 1. The degree of bachelor of arts. (B.A. or A.B.), the first or lowest academical degree conferred by universities and colleges.

7-8? Oh god, with a little effort I would have got at least 8-7!! But I'm still happy I will move up the banzuke, that was my goal in the first place!

I tried out your #2 and I found the results. I must have missed it earlier. Thanks alot!! Now I can see that I apparently submitted my guess on September 6th. If I just had known this earlier. (In a state of confusion...)

Oh your games?? Nice! I didn't know that.. Which two exactly? I'll do my best next basho, let's hope that takes me a bit further!

I guess we're the BIG FOUR now (Blinking...)

Ok, I checked it out and it doesn't seem to be too complicated at all. The difficult part is chosing the right rikishi. (Yucky...) Thanks!

You also played GTB, didn't you??

Yes I did as a matter of fact. I can't believe you remembered! You've got a really good memory apparently! Although I didn't do very well there (Going kyujo...)

Apparently you're right as usual! Baccalaureate for sure.. Thanks!

Bayberries? (Eh?) :-)

The official translation (used in Finland... and India (Sigh...)) is "matriculation examination". I believe it's more or less on par with the International Baccalaureate, European Baccalaureate and Reifepr

Yes, official welcome aboard Tumppi!

Southern Finland? Care to elaborate a bit? I think Finnish sumoforum members' geographic distribution is so far 2*Tampere, 1*Helsinki, 1*Turku

Only Kotoseiya can come up with a word like that baccalaurate :-D :-) :-D Gotta like the vocabulary storage of his....

Matriculation exam is the term I have always used and thought it was the only one. Anyways good luck with that! Indeed it is a new world nowadays I guess with matriculation exam. They even have some new EXIMIA grade there messing things up and some changes has been made in other ways too.

When I was 17 I benched my record, 105kg and aiming higher.

How is your deadlift and squat? The base of all power is deadlift IMO! No belt! Me thinks deadlift is the most efficient single exercise and largely neglected at gyms for some reason. Big muscles but a relatively poor lower back is somewhat odd combination. I did deadlift for 3 years with belt and realized suddenly that my back had grown hopelessly addicted to belt. I then gave up the belt usage in all movements and that was one good decision I never regretted since. I think using belt is somewhat two-headed sword. Sure it *may* protect the back from injuries but it leaves the back weaker when it has to be on its own and not rely on belt. Then again even stranger habit is to use knee straps in squat.....

Maybe we should make a poll on work out activity amongst the forum members (Laughing...)

They've become old enough to expire from the thread list but you can see them by adjusting those pop-up menus on the bottom of the thread list. Rijicho tells me he's been thinking about calibrating those expiration thresholds.

'Tumppi' is a common nickname for someone named 'Thomas' in Finland. Does it sound/look Japanese to you? It's hard for me to tell since I've been called that my whole life (Exercising...)

Tumppi does distinctly NOT sound Japanese ;-) For starters, there is no "Tu" in Japanese (Whistling...)

Thomashimaru sounds a little more like it! (In a state of confusion...)

Indeed (Exercising...)

Somehow I came to like Tanikaze while reading about sumo ukiyo-e (woodblock prints) a couple of years ago in the book "Sumo and the Woodblock Print Masters" by Lawrence Bockford. It's basically an arts book (and the pics are actually scanned and available at banzuke.com) but it was still written in a way giving something away about sumo too. (Whistling...)
