Doitsuyama 1,173 Posted March 21, 2008 All makuuchi yusho leaders seem to lose today as first Tochiozan and Baruto looked overmatched against Kyokutenho and Asasekiryu, and then Asashoryu broke a 28 game winning streak against Kotomitsuki. Hakuho also didn't have an easy time against Kaio, but came through to join Asashoryu in the lead at 11-2. Kokkai won against Takamisakari in a bout to determine the third maegashira rikishi at one win behind the leaders. Kimurayama lost again as Kotokasuga secured kachi-koshi with a win against the juryo yusho leader. Amazingly Kimurayama still is the sole juryo leader as all three pursuers Tosanoumi, Tamanoshima and Kitataiki lost as well, Kitataiki falling prey to the rare kozumatori kimarite from Hakuba. Hoshihikari also won with a nice technique, beating makushita-bound Hochiyama with nimaigeri. messi19 0 Posted March 21, 2008 The most beautiful thing to happen today was Roho getting his just reward for yet another henka and Futeno securing a well-deserved KK in the process. Kokkai looked very strong in yotsu again and Chiyotaikai showed he is not totally lost at it, but Toyonoshima came through and remains his nemesis. Oh, and nobody beats Kotomitsuki 29 times in a row! (I am not worthy...)
Gernobono 455 Posted March 21, 2008 AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! McMickey!!!!!!!!! Why!!!!!!!!!!!!!!I can't believe today was the first day I didn't watch the sumo and actually did some work!!! That's an important lesson learned for me. Never EVER put work ahead of sumo. come on, you did not miss anything interesting......

Harry 67 Posted March 21, 2008 Again I only woke up to see the last few today so not many comments but wow, Asa lost again! No dive today and now of course it looks like no dives the other days either, just becoming more an more human as the basho goes on but now it looks like anyones game for the yokozuna match on senshuuraku. Injured? Getting sloppy? Just better opponents now in the Ozekis? Who knows? Kaoi did alright but he hasn't enough to beat Hakuhou so the yokozunas are all square going into day 14. Chiyotaikai still can't win against Toyonoshima so he is tied with Kaoi at 8-5. Kotomitsuki is now one away from KK so there will just be one kadoban Ozeki in May, the injured Kotooshu. Mitsuki meets Hakuhou tomorrow and then... Chiyotaikai on day 15? He still needs to win one of those for his KK obviously. Congrats to KKs for Sagatsukasa, Kasuganishiki, Tochinoshin, Kotokasuga and Futenou. I'm glad to see Futenou win, especially over Roho; he still hasn't posted his blog entry today but people are already congratulating him in comments on yesterday's entry. The gorilla man is still in it at 6-7. Perhaps he will stay in juryo even at 7-8? Gambatte Tosayutaka! Tomorrow's match against also 6-7 Shirononami will be tough as someone's getting MK. Ushiomaru/Hakuba is the opposite, someone's getting KK tomorrow. Maybe I'll try to stay up and watch the juryo matches live tomorrow, we'll see...

Harry 67 Posted March 21, 2008 unfortunatelly wakanofrog did not get punished for his henka..... But Goeido did. I was going to ask what happens if they both henka but... (actually I did...) Anyways, SOMEONE wants Goeido to KK as he's going against Ryuo tomorrow. Wakanoho will be in tough tomorrow against Asasekiryu who is fighting to avoid MK. Tomorrow's match against also 6-7 Shirononami will be tough as someone's getting MK it's "gorilla vs gorilla" tomorrow ... hehe .... nice torikumi. these two guys are similarly built on the top. we'll call it "Silverback Vs Kong". paolo 0 Posted March 21, 2008 Fascinating... Yesterday at 9.50 (italian time) Asashoryu appeared to be the obvious basho winner. Today at 10.00 the basho is completely open, Asashoryu seems to be falling downhill, Hakuho's form is not clear, even the three guys at 3 losses seem to have some chances for a kettei sen... Exciting and amazing !!!
Bealzbob 0 Posted March 21, 2008 10-3 M7 Baruto faces ozeki Chiyotaikai yet 10-3 M5 Kokkai faces M13 Homasho. Brilliant. Yes I 'get' the timing of when the opponents were drawn up but that disparity is ridiculous, they're practically at opposite ends of the banzuke.

A lot of beautiful bouts in juryo today, and talking of dive, a pretty emphatic one by Toyozakura - not intentional though.

And Tochiozan gets Kotoshogiku..That's just the way it is..Record-wise Tochiozan and Baruto were legitimate yusho contenders coming into Day 13 while Kokkai was not. That's why they are facing sanyaku rikishi on Day 14, because as you have indicated the torikumi was made before today's matches.

As it is a long weekend and I don't seem to be reliably waking up at 3am like I was earlier in the basho I may have to try and stay up for the last couple of nights to make sure I don't miss them... I want to see Takamisakari MK Roho! I'm sure Fay and others are hoping that Shogiku can avoid MK against Tochio. Baruto and Taiaki... Kokkai and Homasho. Records and banzukes aside they should both be exciting matches. I'm afraid I'll have to root for the Japanese rikishi in those matchups tomorrow even though I fear they may lose. Miyabiyama could get KK himself and hand Ama MK... should be a tense night. Edited March 21, 2008 by Harry

Washuyama 635 Posted March 21, 2008 Anybody think Kokkai has a chance in hell of taking the yusho? haahahahahaha ... good one ... ;-) I thought so too, initially. He faces Homasho tomorrow. Winnable... If he does win that one, he may face Kaio on Sunday. The yokozuna each drop one the next two days and you have a 3-way play-off in which case Kokkai will easily dust-off the two washed-up yokozuna.. (Holiday feeling...) Ok probably not, but I was thinking his fine record has been the quietest of the maegashira..

Asashosakari 18,786 Posted March 21, 2008 Give Baruto someone lower or Kokkai someone higher. Don't put their opponents 16 ranks apart is all. Sheesh, it's just one day out of 15. (Showing off...) And Kokkai has had the somewhat harder program so far, with more meatgrinder opponents. I think you're putting far too much emphasis on this because they happen to have the same records at this particular moment...would you even care about the rank disparity if Baruto was 10-3 and Kokkai 9-4? And what if Kokkai draws Kaio for his final bout (as Washuyama just insinuated), while Baruto gets, say, a 7-7 Miyabiyama - would that make it okay again, or would the Day 14 schedule still constitute an outrage? Shomishuu 0 Posted March 21, 2008 Anybody think Kokkai has a chance in hell of taking the yusho? Probably not because on senshuraku he'd not only have to beat an ozeki, but also win a three-way playoff with both yokozuna. A little much there, but I'm wildly impressed at how he's cured most of his old bad habits (and I don't get wild much anymore...)!
