Doitsuyama 1,173 Posted March 20, 2008 Hakuho lost to Chiyotaikai, seemingly deciding the makuuchi yusho race prematurely with the yokozuna's second loss. But Asashoryu made it a race again by losing as well, to sekiwake Kotoshogiku. Tochiozan and Baruto reached double digits with wins today, suddenly levelling with Hakuho and only one win behind Asashoryu in the yusho race. Kokkai and Takamisakari also won and are getting close to double digits as both are 9-3 now. Tosanoumi won against Kitataiki and at 9-3 he is back in the yusho race as leader Kimurayama lost too, to Masatsukasa. Tamanoshima also is still in it, beating Kotokasuga to be one win behind the lead at 9-3 as well. Masatsukasa is the sole rikishi at 8-4 as Tochinoshin, Kotokasuga and Sagatsukasa all lost today, the third consecutive loss for Tochinoshin just before kachi-koshi. Hochiyama had the ninth consecutive loss today and at 1-11 he is in big demotion danger even at J6w as he needs to win all the remaining bouts now. 31 years old Shunketsu also has a bad basho and with 3-9 he also needs to win the remaining bouts to stay in juryo. It's the same condition for shin-sekitori Hokutokuni who is 4-8 now at J12e. Katayama and Tosayutaka are slightly better with 5-7, needing two more wins, both actually have consecutive wins going now. And the final demotion candidates Kirinowaka and Sagatsukasa just need one more win to stay. Harry 67 Posted March 20, 2008 (edited) Wow, what a night! Two yokozunas lose, two okuridashi's, hair pulling, exciting matches from Miyabiyama and many others. A great night of sumo all around, with several results I was not expecting at all. Tochinochin started off the night but just couldn't figure out Wakakirin. Tochi pretty much tripped himself for the loss, though Wakakirin helped him down, tsukiotoshi. Wakakirin is still hanging in there at 5-7 while Tochinoshin just can't seem to break through to kachikoshi at 7-5. Waka seems Tochinonada tomorrow. Kakizoe pulled down Yoshikaze (karma after his previous day's glorious henka tachiai I think)to go to 6-6 while Yoshi is now makekoshi. Kakizoe meets another MK, Otsukasa tomorrow to start the makuuchi show. Kaiho found some life and beat Toyohibiki via tsukiotoshi. Toyo is now MK. Kaiho meets MK Koryu tomorrow. In the first highly anticipated match of the night for me it was Takamisakari against Homasho. Home pushed him right to the edge, feet on the bales of rice straw imbedded in the clay dohyo and somehow he stayed out! I couldn't believe it when he then spun Home around for the yorikiri win to go to 9-3. Robo does it again! Homasho falls to 8-4 after such a promising start, though still a solid KK. Robo meets Kokkai tomorrow while Homasho will see Hokutoriki. Iwakiyama is now hanging in there at 5-7 with a yorikiri win over Otsukasa who is now MK as a result. MK Ryuo could be another victory for Iwakiyama if he can continue to move forward and stay on his feet. His mobility is still very poor however so I don't think he'll win all three remaining matches for KK, though he could still surprise me. Already MK Ryuo, via katasugashi, beat Kasugao who is now 6-6. Kasugao fights Tamakasuga next. The next fight I was looking forward to was Baruto vs. Futeno who is still looking for KK. It started off well for Futeno, pushing Baruto forward toward the edge but he just couldn't push him out and a twist at the hips for Baruto put Futeno out via sukuinage. Baruto is now 10-2 while Futeno sits at 7-5, teetering on the edge still. Futeno has as his aite tomorrow, Roho which could be an opportunity to go to KK though the Russian is crafty. Baruto goes toe to toe with Asasekiryu on day 13. Tochiozan made fairly quick work of Hokutoriki with an oshidashi. I was looking forward to this one but it was never really close at all. Tochi is now 10-2 along with Baruto and goes against Kyokutenho tomorrow while Hokutoriki meets Homie, as said above. Roho (6-6) pulled down Tamakasuga. I thought there might have been a little bit of hair pulling but for the most part it was just a good effort from the "Russian Bird". The hikiotoshi is one of his moves so you have to watch for it and he used it well tonight. As mentioned earlier, Roho will try to keep Futeno out of KK on day 13. Tochinonada's yorikiri of Wakanosato leaves him at 6-6 and still in it. Nada meets the resurgent Wakakirin (5-7) tomorrow in a must win for him. Kokkai beat Goeido via okuridashi, a pat on the tush to send him out disappointed and still looking for KK at 7-5. Wakanoho at 6-6 is also hungry so that should be a good one against Goeido tomorrow while Kokkai will meet Robo as I already said, both men already kachikoshi but still fighting for banzuke position and the envelopes. Tokitenku kept his KK hopes barely alive with a hikiotoshi over a dejected Dejima. Toki will meet Kisenosato tomorrow who is almost at KK so very hungry himself. Toyonoshima is already MK but fought hard to beat Aminishiki who was embarassed by the defeat and did not tilt his head one degree after the match before leaving. Takekaze should keep his slim KK hopes alive tomorrow. The reason Kisenosato isn't at KK yet is because of a remarkable match by Miyabiyama! Who would have expected that it would be Kisenosato gassing out before the blobmonster whose fierce harites lead to an easy okuridashi as Kise practically walked out by himself, he was so tired. It was a long match but without much of a breather in the middle, both men pushing each other to the brink only to have good defense keep it going. The slap fest was getting nasty and I'm surprised their faces didn't look worse by the end. Get that man some shochu! At 6-6 Miyabi is still in this one and will meet fellow 6-6 record holder Kotoshogiku on day 13. Kakuryuu is also at 6-6 following an easy win over Takekaze who seems determined to go down as low as possible to improve his chances in Tokyo next time. Ryuu meets Ama next time to try and keep his record above .500 for the tourney. Ama somehow survived a brutal illegal hikichonmage attempt by Asasekiryu which went unpunished but in the end I'm not sure if Asa gave it to him or if Ama took the win via sitatenage. His chonmage was extremely dishevelled as he took his envelopes. The win keeps KK a possibility for him while Sekiryuu takes his same 5-7 record teetering over to Baruto on the 13th day. Wakanoho stopped short and pulled down a pissed off but already KK Kaio via hatakikomi for his 6th win. They next see Goeido and Hakuhou respectively. Kotomitsuki also got his needed 6th win over also already KK Kyokutenho today via yorikiri. Mitsuki needs to keep it going tomorrow but Asashouryuu won't make it easy for him. As I already wrote elsewhere, I was saying to myself before the Hakuhou Taikai match that it would be OK for Taikai to pull him down today to help his beya-group mate Asa and to get himself KK. The tachiai was good, no henka and then Taikai got Hak in a wicked nodowa. Hak put all his weight forward and with just a little pat on the back and a side step Hak went barreling out of the dohyo!!! I couldn't believe it. Ozeki beating Yokozuna isn't that rare I guess but with Chiyotaikai's elbow I didn't have much hope for it. Just one green zabuton flew. I also thought this was a bit bad as the senshuuraku matchup with Hak and Asa was now kind of ruined. But not so fast! Kotoshogiku did the unthinkable in pushing Asa back out of the dohyo, making it look easy in fact to the disbelief of the once again human looking Asashouryuu-ningen. Giku still has a ways to go for KK but he is in it and this win should give him confidence going against Miyabiyama tomorrow though that could be another brutal one if Miya brings his game again tomorrow. The zabutons flew, Giku got an interview and the senshuuraku match was on again, at least for the time being. Amazing, simply amazing. I'm so glad I woke up in lots of time for this one. Kaikitsune Makoto 203 Posted March 20, 2008 Due to injustice, I have not see any sumo today but there are some nice and less nice streaks though. Nada was 0-6 but is now 6-6 so 6 in a row while Potsu injured his shoulder and has gone from 4-0 to 4-8 and goes back to juryo. Kokkai and Aminishiki are in the same menisci injury boat. Limpings don't mean much. Both limp at times when the menisci gets into painful position and so. Nice set-up for tomorrow's musubi no ichiban. Shoryu pissed at Sadogatake-beya due to losing to Shogun while Mickey in 4 bout winning streak and fighting for his kk. Ok so it is not musubi no ichiban after all but at musubi no ichiban genki U vs Hakuho is good too. Life is life and tomorrow no chance to watch sumo live either which is very very sad. Washuyama 635 Posted March 20, 2008 ...Absolutely no effort from Asashoryu today. Dive While I don't know if I agree with the "dive" remark, for argument's sake, let's say he did. Is that a bad thing after watching Hakuho lose, he knew the interest in the basho probably would drop dramatically if he had a two bout lead, almost guaranteeing his yusho. Now while Asa is still the favorite to win, there will be a greater excitement going into the Asa-Hak match on the final day with the possibility of a kettei-sen still on the table. Just my 2p.. Kaikitsune Makoto 203 Posted March 20, 2008 But Asashoryu made it a race again by losing as well, to sekiwake Kotoshogiku. Good choice of words. Absolutely no effort from Asashoryu today. Dive I haven't seen the bout but with these kind of comments you will ridicule Shogun's sumo quite fully and also bring the same shit about George Best or who the hell was he that you did some years ago. So you are saying that Asashoryu decided that he would rather take a loss instead of zensho yusho to underline his comeback? And no effort from Shoryu? What the hell does that even mean? Means he didn't get his sumo going. Oh man, you piss me off. Of all the damn members you bring this shit like this here. Sumoforum doesn't need this, not as long as I am here. Discuss your dive-bullshit somewhere else. If you have tonque in cheek, then take it out and stuff it into some other place. If you are serious, then be my quest but be a guest on forum too when such comments are about to emerge. Then again if you'd actually be right, it is so screwed up situation that it is even more pissing off. Oh man....this is not healthy feeling I have. But sure discuss this more and especially Asashoryu fans, come to discuss this vividly, explain how Shoryu never puts effort or underestimates his foe when he loses and especially now that Hakuho lost, it can't be but a dive. Do that and make my day. I'll be back later to read all wonderful stuff and will bring my own artillery fully then. What a fun night it will be. Lets dive into a dark dense ocean of tooth paste where monsters reside and nothing but vile destruction comes. New era has begun. Life is no longer life. Kintamayama 44,346 Posted March 20, 2008 Absolutely no effort from Asashoryu today. Dive I strongly disagree. A yokozuna doesn't dive. There is no reason in the world he'd throw a bout on day 12. It's dumb. He's got two other opponents before Hakuhou. If this were day 14, well, I can understand you thinking that, but day 12? He has a very motivated Kotomitsuki and KaioU who you can never write off regardless of anything. Makes no sense. The other thing that makes no sense is the fact you totally disregarded your boy's ugly, blatant, disrespectful henka today. You, who have become the guru of the Dou?? How does that sit with you?
aderechelsea 124 Posted March 20, 2008 Nishi.. i think you are seeing what you want to see in this particular bout ... the guy just lost a bout. Happens to the best from time to time.
aderechelsea 124 Posted March 20, 2008 btw .... Hakuho totally messed up his bout. Instead of pushing Taikai's elbow to free himself from the nodowa he just pushed forward as hard as he could , giving Taikai the chance to slap him down with a perfectly timed inashi. Kudos to Chiyo. and he showed that he is a sore loser ... he barely moved his head instead of bowing after the match ... (Sign of approval...)
Kintamayama 44,346 Posted March 20, 2008 The other thing that makes no sense is the fact you totally disregarded your boy's ugly, blatant, disrespectful henka today. What henka? He went forward and then pulled down Kaio. He got the respect he deserved by being slapped to the dirt. Or are you saying Wakanoho should have gone easy on the old arm-breaker? Are you seriously saying it wasn't a henka? Come on.. It was a blatant henka if there ever was one. And I'm not saying anyone should go easy on anyone - I never liked KaioU to say the least and the pitiful "presents' he got two bashos ago were.. well.. pitiful. I am also the number one advocate of henka in the universe as you know, and it was a textbook, brilliant henka. I just can't understand why you are looking the other way on this. I wouldn't have mentioned it if you hadn't turned all traditional on us lately.. BTW, KaioU was actively and visibly pissed, something he rarely is, because your boy wouldn't man up. I know I have no evidence but can you watch that bout and tell me you believe Asashoryu went all out? Yes, Asa went all out. He always does. Kotoshougiku was way ahead of him in every move and didn't leave him a chance. Give the guy credit, he's worked hard for it. Asa made a monumental effort on the edge (all out..), but Shogiku's belly was too strong. Even Asa has lousy bouts sometimes, and today was one of these days. After Hakuhou lost, there was a close-up on Asa sitting on the side, and I knew there and then that he would lose. I say he became complacent and saw the yusho too clearly. I wager he loses one of his next two bouts.
Kintamayama 44,346 Posted March 20, 2008 On another note-two bouts should not be missed - Ama-Asasekiryuu which already has been mentioned, and first and foremost-a real keeper and wawaweewa - Miyabiyama-Kisenosato. Watch Kisenosato literally collapse (not fall- on- the- floor collapse, but totally- exhausted collapse) at the end from the effort.
Bix Poku 1 Posted March 20, 2008 Today is the day I regret most not having seen todays bouts through live stream peephole. My only hope is that info-sumo (be his soul praised to high heavens) shows us what happened exactly.
aderechelsea 124 Posted March 20, 2008 Wakanoho doing a henka? nah .... that was just "Kyokushuzan-style" tachi-ai. Both arms stretched to receive the opponent and then pull-down. No henka involved. Kaio didn't go all out .... (Sign of approval...) Ama's win was declared a shitatenage but it was clearly the same technique that Asashoryu used against Kyokutenho. It involved a leg trip with the arm. anyway .... of minor importance. Kisenosato and Miyabiyama gave a nice passionate battle. Many tsuppari (that favored Miya) and some yotsu at the end (should have favored Kise but actually didn't) and a finish with lots of huffs and puffs. Kisenosato's stamina is horrible. You just cannot lose mainly because you are out of breath against Miya (who is much older too).
Kintamayama 44,346 Posted March 20, 2008 A "henka" is moving to the side or backwards at the tachi-ai. Hitting and then stepping back is not a henka. For what it's worth I think Wakanoho himself said it wasn't great sumo in the interview. Ozeki Kotomitsuki and Yokozuna Hakuho both henka'd him this time out. The latter even had the barefaced cheek to come out with something along the lines of "He likes to jump around at the tachi-ai so I watched him carefully" after pulling a henka of his own! "Not great sumo" usually means "I henka'd blatantly..". As for others henkaing him, good for them, and good for him for doing it today. He did, he did. I'll check what the papers say and get back to you shortly.
bulsara 0 Posted March 20, 2008 Sorry to disturb your argy-bargy, but what do you experts think about Baruto's chances and his sumo this basho? Who might be the last two opponents etc. Thank you!
sekihiryu 51 Posted March 20, 2008 It was a pretty dismal half asleep effort by Shoryu today, way too complacent and got caught napping by a quick Shogun. He deserved to lose and shogun deserved to win. the end
Bealzbob 0 Posted March 20, 2008 (edited) Kaio - Wakanoho Have to say it doesn't look like a henka to me. Ama - Asasekiryu - Good stuff Kisenosato - Miyabiyama - Dirty henka Miyabiyama! Edited March 20, 2008 by Bealzbob
sekihiryu 51 Posted March 20, 2008 Who would have expected that it would be Kisenosato gassing out before the blobmonster That was very strange. Someone as young as Kisenosato who reportedly does as much keiko as he does to run out of steam like that against the most overweight veteran in makuuchi?? Odd indeed. Miyabi belted the air out of Kisenosato, you have to give Miyabi his due he hits hard and can take as good as he gives. Miyabi has won many a long slap fest like that, Kisenosato is not used to that game.
Asashosakari 18,783 Posted March 20, 2008 Wakanoho doing a henka? nah .... that was just "Kyokushuzan-style" tachi-ai. Both arms stretched to receive the opponent and then pull-down On that note, Miyabiyama and Takekaze seemed to be doing a double-Shuzan on Day 11, minus the pulldown part obviously since there was nobody in position to be pulled down. kame 0 Posted March 20, 2008 I didn't see an actual henka from wakanoho but it def was, as has been mentioned, kyokushuzan sumo, so following the kanji meaning it was henka! either way, he pulled exactly the same move vs Kokkai so prolly Kaiou is partly to blame. he did seem more upset at himself.
