Kotokanyu got himself kicked out of Sumo after that bout, by charging into the opposite changing room and punching Ikioi, I believe with a towel around his fist. Nonetheless, it was egregious enough that he was quickly forced to retire, with none of the important members of his heya showing up for the danpatsu. This also was not allowed to take place at the KK. He retired in an atmosphere of shame. Comparison's apparently were never made (out loud) with the Roho incident, even here on the forum IIRC. i.e., why was Roho not forced to retire under very similar circumstances. In fact I seem to remember the comparison du jour was Zidane. (Laughing...)

That's probably because the circumstances were NOT similar. Rohou did not punch out Chiyotaikai who beat him , but hit a photographer later. A grave act in itself, but really no comparison.

Well, sure, just not a direct comparison. But it's easy to make a loose comparison. Both of them lost their cool over things that happened on the dohyo during a bout, and then physically assaulted someone in the shitaku-beya. I can certainly see several reasons why Kotokanyu's case was considered more severe, but I can venture a few reasons why Roho's was more severe, such as more exposure and bad PR for the kyokai. Obviously in the sumo world, respect for your aite trumps respect for any other human being, and I'm not saying that is wrong.

I think the Roho incident was a big reason he was kicked out. If he had done it prior to that he might have only received a suspension.

I never would have thought of it this way, but there is a sliver of logic to hold onto there. Interesting...

I'm pretty certain that Kotokanyu was more a victim of the Roho incident that Roho himself. IIRC, Kotokanyu's incident happened the basho following Roho's, so I think its possible that the Kyokai decided to make an example out of Kotokanyu in order to send a message to the other rikishi that any such future behaviour would not be tolerated.

Kotokanyu seems to have hurt feelings what was beaten by hand at the top of Dohyou by Ikioi.

Took me a second to make the connection there.

Yes, embarassed regarding a beating, right? Spin that, flip it around... I guess so...
