Hello there!

I'm an English teacher currently living in Tokyo where I've been working and living for 6 years. My Japanese, though, sucks due to teaching my own language 5 (long) days a week plus my hobbies of travelling, photography, and video-editing tend to get in the way. However, while my Japanese is limited, I've been studying Japanese history on my own these past years while attending many festivals from Kyoto to Sapporo.

You can see by my blog and youtube how I spend a lot of my time:

Roving Ronin Report

Ronin Dave

As for sumo, I once thought it boring and a subject ripe for parody due to an ignorance of the sport. However after watching it on TV my first month here, I started to get an appreciation for the sport. Sumo - more than just Big Guys in Thongs It was several years later till I actually saw sumo live at an outdoor exhibition and another year after that before I went to my first tournment. Since then, I've become rather hooked and try to go to the basho at least once whenever it's in Tokyo - though last year I made the effort to see the basho in Nagoya.

Despite my brief exposure to sumo I was fortunate to catch a fairly significant event in the sport - Asashoryu losing to Kaio in the May 2007 Basho on Day 13 which ensured Hakuho's promotion to yokozuna.

Anyway, hello!

nah, that's Macclesfield - where the ST 'plastic Manc' comes from I understand.

Met so many Mancunians in Japan who actually hail from Cheshire. Guess I can claim to come from both?

I was born in Manchester and have lived in Cheshire, Manchester again and Cheshire once more - all prior to the age of 18 and without ever moving house! Postal borders changing and all that. Family member nearby even had 2 phone numbers (area codes) that came through to the same phone once!
