sumojoann 1,256 Posted April 10 TV Japan provided live coverage of the Makuuchi division in my area (Houston, Texas) for the past 11 to 12 years. That channel ceased broadcasting March 31 of this year. Replacing it is Jme, a streaming app costing $25USD/mo. Their website indicates that Jme is available in North America and Canada. I spoke with an agent with TV Japan at 1-877-885-2726. He was located in Japan and didn’t speak much English, but he tried to help anyway. He said that Jme consists of 3 channels, NHK-World Premium (which will have sumo coverage, though he didn’t know how much), NHK-World Japan and Jme Select. The agent also said I would need to sign up with a streaming service (he indicated Apple TV, Amazon Fire Stick, Roku, and I have since found out Google TV and Samsung TV). We want to watch sumo on TV but I know you can also watch it on iPhones, iPads and other devices. I was instructed to purchase some equipment from Best Buy to attach to our TV. If you sign up through Jme’s website before April 30, you get one month free. My husband and I are still in the middle of this transition and still have a number of questions, but I’m confident we’ll be up and running by the start of the Natsu Basho!

sumojoann 1,256 Posted April 10 We were paying $25USD/mo for TV Japan so it doesn’t bother us. I suppose if it really bothers you, you could sign up only during the months that have a basho, then discontinue it afterwards!

My whole TV package costs less than that, and it has A LOT of stuff in it.
sumojoann 1,256 Posted April 10 Sounds like you have a real bargain. I look at it this way. If I watch all 15 days of a basho and I’m paying $25USD/mo, that’s $1.67 for 2 hours of live sumo daily. That to me is a super bargain!

I was going to make the same point, but it can happen if the bottom falls out of juryo as it did in January 2015 and January 2018. That's only twice in 60+ basho so I guess "extremely unlikely" is the appropriate term. He might also be helped if a couple of kabu-owning wrestlers in juryo decide to hang up their mawashi. Yeah, I was reacting to: "Six wins or better in May ought to be enough for the Isenoumi stable youngster to reach jūryō" We know it's possible, but it's certainly unlikely, though we can quibble about the most appropriate intensifier to put in front of "unlikely"
John Gunning 3,513 Posted May 9 I’m blaming that one on small banzuke print and eyesight not being what it once was. I had counted him as being makushita 5W not 6W. I can only apologise to the fans and promise to do more (optical) keiko. 3

To be honest, I'm not sure anything is more suitably sumo than checking a wrestler's rank by referencing the old school printed banzuke. Any resulting error I think can be swept under the rug (off the dohyo?) in my books.
