Ha ha. I only just read Mark's "Hang up the mawashi already, Hakuho, you're done" article. Suppose I read it in a rather different light, given Hak's follow up zensho yusho tournament.

People like him always forget one thing: Is there any way for me (in germany) to a) watch the bouts live and b) watch bouts of past bashos, without me or someone else having to resort to not perfectly legal measures? I don't think so. I would like to pay a fair(!!!) amount for this privilege, but...

So it's youtube.

Thank you Kintamayama-sama!

So.....Mr. Buckton claims that the disappearance of the free NSK feed is directly connected to Araibira's youtube service.

I'm far too drunk to comment on that.

"News being news in the modern era"

"Increasingly, however, the numbers of international media outlets, professional photographers and journalists reaching out for help in gaining access to morning practice or one of the six annual tournaments has also been increasing."

It has been several years since we have had to suffer thru one of Mark's bloviations about his copyright obsession. Some things never change.

As of today, a sumo fan not living in Japan has no way at all of watching sumo live, or even recorded for that matter, even if he is willing to pay exorbitant prices. As of today, sumo is unavailable. Period. If that is what the Kyokai wanted, they got it. It has nothing whatsoever to do with YouTube. If anything, the YouTube channels have brought in thousands of new sumo fans that in turn fill the Kokugikan seats.

I can not understand the Kyokai's logic behind this. Maybe someone can explain it to me someday.

Even if you live in Japan it's not trivial to get the sumo--unless you have an actual TV handy. I don't. I find this mindboggling. Plenty of Japanese people are on the train or at their desks when sumo is on.

I also agree with Kintamayama regarding overseas fans watching on YouTube: if you *literally cannot* give the Kyokai money to watch the show legally, they aren't losing money due to YouTube. QED. Bah.

And the mastery of vocabulary 'This phenomena phenomenon — coupled with the huge numbers of non-Japanese now seen each day at the honbasho — has, arguably seen global interest and awareness of all things sumo increase as a result.'

I suppose he's saying that both the first and the second derivative are greater than zero.

I suppose he's saying that both the first and the second derivative are greater than zero.

His verb should be conjugated in the plural, have, not has.

Perhaps he means the increasing increase is exponential.

QUOTE "And, on my own numerous visits to 15-20 stables in and around Tokyo".

I am surprised he didn't name drop every one of those 15 to 20 stables.

QUOTE "As a result, he was shut down on YouTube but the “by the fans for the fans” aspect of uploads had changed forever. Money was being made by a person with no right to make money in the first place. Others took note. Most importantly, those behind the management of sumo broadcasts noticed, put their heads together and not long after the grainy lifeline of fans around Japan and the world unable to get to tourneys was gone."

I wonder who it was that told them about the uploads on youtube? I bet it was someone who looks after their own self interests even if in the end, it hurts the sport of sumo.

Didn't the NSK stream already go behind the paywall while araibira was still active? Buckton's timeline of events (much like his reasoning) seems rather off.

This article was the result of a thread on the forum started by "skepticalsports" in May. I found both the discussion between the author and people on the forum and the resulting article really interesting:

http://fivethirtyeight.com/features/the-sumo-matchup-centuries-in-the-making/

Found it a very well written and informative article up to I read "According to MB." At that point, I semi-doubted it's seriousness... If that portion were removed, I would consider it a great article.
