Kintamayama 47,320 Posted January 7, 2008 (edited) There will be 7 new recruits, including 2 4th year Nichidai guys-195 kilogram Fukao and Yamashita, both heading for Kise-beya. Another best 8 guy, Miura from Kinki Daigaku, will be joining Isegahama beya. Edited January 7, 2008 by Kintamayama
Sasanishiki 57 Posted January 7, 2008 That should keep Tasha happy. With Fukao being in ozumo there should be at least a little more news about him than before.
Kintamayama 47,320 Posted January 8, 2008 Fukao is 198 kilos, 1.80 meters. The 6th heaviest shindeshi ever. Miura is 148 kilos and 1.79 meters tall. Tipping the scales:
ilovesumo 12 Posted January 8, 2008 Oh no................. Fukao....he really turned pro..........."the wall" won't be too far...but let's see how far he goes. 頑張ってください。
kaiguma 0 Posted January 8, 2008 (edited) Oh no.................Fukao....he really turned pro..........."the wall" won't be too far...but let's see how far he goes. 頑張ってください。 Just say no to Meatbombs! Bad for the image of Sumo. Give us more Amas and you will have more middle-/high school Japanese boys interested in joining. Doesn't matter where Ama's from; what matters is he has an athletic body, technique, speed, and mental quickness. EDIT: STRAW POLL - when will Fukao Hit the Wall? Maezumo, Jonokuchi, Jonidan, Sandanme, Makushita, Juryo, Makuuchi, Sanyaku, Ozeki, or Yokozuna? My guess, Sandanme. Anything lower will be extremely pathetic. ilovesumo 12 Posted January 8, 2008 Even if he would be no meat bomb...I have seen him in action several times...he is just...no osumosan... wish him well but to be realistic- no way dude... (Nodding yes...)
Gusoyama 105 Posted January 8, 2008 Even if he would be no meat bomb...I have seen him in action several times...he is just...no osumosan...wish him well but to be realistic- no way dude... (Nodding yes...) too slow, too apathetic, too stiff? Please explain for those of us that have no experience seeing him.
ilovesumo 12 Posted January 8, 2008 (edited) Stiff, yes. Too big, yes. He is a Yorikiri-Hatakikomi man. Fix and out. Not interesting to watch and if the pathetik Hatakikomi-Yorikiri did not work, he is easily pushed out. He has no plan b. Asashosakari 20,279 Posted January 9, 2008 fukao first ever to have ozumo be his second stint at some form of professional sumo? ;) Heh. Arguably the first since the late 1930s, I'd imagine...
Itachi 396 Posted January 9, 2008 fukao first ever to have ozumo be his second stint at some form of professional sumo? ;) What do you mean? Nichidai is a university and so not professional. What form of pro-sumo did he do? Nice job with your nbase team by the way!
aderechelsea 125 Posted January 9, 2008 That NY World Sumo Challenge shit a couple of years ago .... just watched it again and Fukao sucks badly indeed ....
Sasanishiki 57 Posted January 9, 2008 Wow, I don't know about "the wall", but Fuako looks like he'd have difficulty with other parts of a sumobeya, like climbing a flight of stairs. let's face it, though, he went to the pedigree sumo university, Nichidai, and did OK, not great but OK. Admittedly he seems to have trailled off in the last couple of years (got too big, perhaps?) but I'm sure the oyakata will whip him into shape a little. But, what other chice did Fukao have apart from going into ozumo. He did enough at university to convince himself and others that he had a future n sumo, and somewhere along the line he got himself to a massive size so he could take this on. I do fear that he will crash and burn relatively quickly.
Asashosakari 20,279 Posted January 11, 2008 (edited) Another shindeshi report, and since I didn't understand a lick of the original Sports Hochi article even with the help of the 'fish, I'll translate Watashi's (thanks!) excellent translation from the German forum instead: One of the seven shindeshi has joined ex-Onokuni's Shibatayama-beya, but that's not quite where he was planning to be just a short while ago. 19-year-old Funakoshi Kotaro (船越 興太郎) from Katano City in Osaka actually had intended to enroll at prestigious Tokyo University (Todai) after finishing high school a year ago, and even scored in the high 70th percentiles in the national test for university admission (I'm not sure if that thing has an official English name...). He also ranked 14th in an Osaka-wide test of maths and sciences. "I'm interested in politics", he says, and as such was planning to enroll in Todai's department of law and political sciences. However, he didn't do well enough on the university's own internal admissions exam, and subsequently attended an Osaka prep school for the past year in order to improve his chances of getting into Todai on the second attempt. That's not quite how things worked out, though. "I started getting doubts. I was feeling pressured and couldn't concentrate on studying anymore." He had been an avid player of American football in high school (and had been engaged in a wide range of sports when he was younger, such as kendo, baseball and swimming) and was already planning to play football or do sumo once he would be enrolled at university - and then, in one of the bigger ironies, the Tokitsukaze scandal hit, with its attendent near-daily reports in the newspapers: "I'd always thought it was difficult to get into Ozumo. But when I found out [from all the scandal coverage] how easy it must be, I decided to give that a try." He went searching for stables on the internet, and eventually decided on the small Shibatayama-beya, sending the oyakata an email requesting enrollment in September. He eventually joined the heya at the end of the year, against the wishes of his family. According to the Kyokai's public relations department, he is the first-ever shindeshi to have taken a Todai admissions exam. While he isn't particularly large (178 cm, 109 kg), his American football background playing offensive guard and nose tackle is evidently carrying over. He finished the back strength part of the shindeshi tests in third place with 165 kg, right behind the collegiates Miura (185 kg) and Fukao (175 kg). Funakoshi's favourite rikishi is Ama: "I like him because he is so technically strong." Edited January 11, 2008 by Asashosakari

Petr 0 Posted January 12, 2008 Interesting news, now I'm thinking of going to meet him at Shibatayama and have a word with him to give Todai one more try. Some team member might help him to preare for the exams...

He reads English newspapers at the heya, and appears to be a very learned one. "I can always go back to university after I retire. School is a night thing and Sumo is a day thing. I'm getting used to it..", he said.

Ebashi has changed to 武道山 (Budouzan?) I can't discern the first kanji of Miura's new shikona but surely the last two would be read 'fuji'. After a more careful look, I wonder if it couldn't be Homafuji?
