Doitsuyama 1,173 Posted December 28, 2007 Hello all hoshitori players, The next basho is starting on January, 13th and you can send in your selections for Totoro's hoshitori. You can change it as often as you want until the deadline. The hoshitori page can be reached at: http://hoshitori.sumogames.com/Hoshitori/hoshi.html Here is a link to the rules for all newcomers, always worth a read: http://hoshitori.sumogames.com/Hoshitori/rules.html Here is a direct link to the entry form: http://sumodb.sumogames.com/Hoshi/HoshEntry.aspx The entries can be made until noon JST on Shonichi (January 13th, 2008). IMPORTANT! Please note that the link to the entry page has changed as I will no longer be able to keep the trusty website. Until or during Hatsu basho all pages related to the Hoshitori game will also be moved to the sumogames webserver. I intended that move sooner or later anyway as The Database will make it possible to add new features making administration of the hoshitori game easier - the new entry form already is coupled to the database and don't need to be changed for a new basho anymore. As an added benefit I also intend to program new pages for your pleasure - no further hints here. :-O For now I just hope that the new entry form is working well - I am off to Austria tomorrow skiing and internet access is based on luck. I will be back a week before the basho starts so it shouldn't be a real problem. I'd still be happy if some of you could test the new entry form for bugs and report until tonight, so I can make improvements in time.
Fay 1,677 Posted December 28, 2007 Worked fine for me. First try, a run time error, but when going back and trying again it worked.
Randomitsuki 2,768 Posted January 10, 2008 It's a little early to become all-panicky, but I was wondering about Doitsuyama's absence. He was supposed to return from vacation last weekend, and he's not been logged in to the Forum since then. Anybody know his whereabouts? I hope it's not another mysterious disappearance ala Kashunowaka...

Vikanohara 171 Posted January 10, 2008 I hope it's not another mysterious disappearance ala Kashunowaka... Several years back I had a solid friendly relationship with a Spanish guy. We used to chat hours and hours, for several years. But one day, suddenly all communication stopped. I sent him several e-mails, but none got answered. A very annoying feeling, as you simply can't know what exactly happened and just fear for the worst. (In a state of confusion...)

Doitsuyama 1,173 Posted January 13, 2008 Ok, the day 1 results are out now, but they aren't on the old server anymore. The new link to the daily scores is http://sumodb.sumogames.com/Hoshi/HoshScoreDay.aspx. Since there are more changes involved, I'll quote my daily comment regarding the website change. The transition is not complete yet, so please don't be too critical. Reports of errors always are welcome of course. A new year has started with new sumo and new Hoshitori games. The biggest news is - not Asashoryu's return, but the move from the Hoshitori website to a new server. I know that websites moves are rather unpopular, but I had no choice anyway as the old site has to be closed. I took it upon me to sweeten the deal by enhancing the Hoshitori website with new features. If you click on any player on this page you are getting the day-by-day results for this basho, and more importantly, the complete selection for the player with point breakdown. On the left are links to the Hoshitori selection stats and to the Hatsu 2008 banzuke. Another interesting feature is having all results back to Nagoya 1994, the first Hoshitori basho, available. From the aforementioned player pages you can get a complete history for this player by following that link on the left side. Especially interesting for Obana who has played in all basho bar one. Oh, and the Hoshitori results should be updated automatically now after the last makuuchi bout of the day, so you can check this page right away to see how you have done. You will just have to wait to read my comments of the day. Speaking of these daily comments, several upsets today - including Ama, Baruto and Homasho - made for lower scores. Takanodoitsu avoided all these pitfalls, having only Goeido as major point loser. Only Terarno and Baka to stay close. The number of players is slightly up to 143 and most importantly we have seven new players and two returnees.
Shiyonofuji/Kaiopectate 2 Posted January 13, 2008 The new link to the daily scores is http://sumodb.sumogames.com/Hoshi/HoshScoreDay.aspx. ========== Doitsuyama: The new site is VERY VERY cool! A little delay in loading on my wireless, but well worth the wait -- especially the career stats! Congratulations on the improvements to the site, and THANKS! P.S. It looks like I actually did okay at this game, several years ago...

Asashosakari 18,786 Posted January 14, 2008 Excellent! Though I'm not sure I wanted to be reminded that my best Hoshitori performance was way back in my debut over four years ago. What's that about beginner's luck? Anyway, nitpicks: A "Highest Rank" entry would be nice on the players' pages, either atop the career result table or at the bottom with the prize summary. And I think this is two different players...
Doitsuyama 1,173 Posted January 14, 2008 Anyway, nitpicks: A "Highest Rank" entry would be nice on the players' pages, either atop the career result table or at the bottom with the prize summary. And I think this is two different players... Highest rank is added now in the summary section. I separated Kitanoyama into two players as you are likely right. But I have been very cautious here because players have regularly been returning after long absences, so you never really know.
Doitsuyama 1,173 Posted January 14, 2008 Day 2 scores are out, or rather day 2 comments, as the scores were up right after the end of makuuchi: http://sumodb.sumogames.com/Hoshi/HoshScoreDay.aspx That link always leads to the most current day, you can select earlier days in the left sidebar of course. Two smaller additions: The daily leader(s) now is marked in the table, and at the bottom of the page is a small scoring summary table with maximum and average for all categories where points have been scored on that day. Yes, but yours is more colorful.. as for best website among games, I think GTB is by far the best, especially the fully automated futuristic look of the site..Click your name and go nowhere!! Ruziklao 34 Posted January 14, 2008 I think another round of :-/ (Showing respect...) :-) (Showing respect...) etc.. is in order for Mr. Doitsuyama. This is every sumo game players' wettest dream. Click your name and see you actually have a career!!Awesome. Indeed extremely interesting, kudos to Doitsuyama for this excellent rewriting! I hate to say this >:-( , but I was looking at careers of some seasoned veterans and surprisingly I was quite badly surprised by the level of their performance. Naturally, I am nobody to criticize them (Clapping wildly...) and thus I just ask: For how long can one sit at yokozuna spot without compromising the value of the rank? When should a yokozuna retire? Doitsuyama 1,173 Posted January 14, 2008 For how long can one sit at yokozuna spot without compromising the value of the rank? When should a yokozuna retire? Maybe I am the wrong person to answer this question after all, but basically it's the yokozuna's call to retire and different people have different standards. There isn't a Hoshitori YDC as well, but it (rarely) happened in the past that I asked some questions in private to a yokozuna. The hoshitori is a difficult game to do well all the time anyway (as you have seen) since you have only one pre-basho stab and can't correct it later. So, unless the scores are really bad, the minimum expectation I have of a yokozuna is that he is regularly playing - and one current yokozuna is indeed a bit disappointing in that regard. Still, I can't force a retirement of a yokozuna.

Vikanohara 171 Posted January 15, 2008 For all you persistence watchers out there : Any advice on how to turn this career record around ? -> http://sumodb.sumogames.com/Hoshi/HoshPlayer.aspx?p=776 In the current basho I'm on 137th spot and a 0-15 record (as usual). (In a state of confusion...) I would be even happy with a 5-10 record one day. (Applauding...)
