Koldonowaka 1 Posted December 17, 2007 Hi all, I'm sorry to say that I've just informed that Kyushu Basho will be the LAST tournament we will broadcast on Eurosport. It seems that the Kyokai is asking too much money, trying to break Eurosport's exclusivity in Europe and this seems to be the end. Next week Eurosport will broadcast again the Paris Bercy Tournament from 1995, that you could see recently on Eurosport 2. And it will be the last time for sumo. I hope the Kyokai reconsider their position. :-S

Leonishiki 49 Posted December 17, 2007 (edited) This is the worst Christmas present I have ever received. Maybe the Kyokai have forgotten that everybody in Europe know about sumo thanks to Eurosport. Or maybe they believe that all europeans sumo fans are in love with sumo because their "good business manners"? Sad day for sumo. :-S Edited December 17, 2007 by Leonishiki
Oimeru 0 Posted December 17, 2007 :-S indeed. And so the circle will be closed... if I remember correctly, that tournament was also the first sumo shown on Eurosport. I wonder what the Kyokai are thinking -- that move doesn't make much sense without competitors for Eurosport, no?
Jakusotsu 5,874 Posted December 17, 2007 Actually, this is not the first time Eurosport threatened to discontinue buying Sumo Digest. In the end, they always managed to renew their contract, so I'm not taking this as the final word in the matter. Looks like standard haggling procedure to me. The (IIRC) last time Eurosport stopped broadcasting Sumo was April 2004 and this decision lasted until June 2004, so there is still some room for hope. ilovesumo 12 Posted December 17, 2007 :-S Cannot be...Asking for more money....what's better? Current level or ZERO? how to make new fans without Sumo on Eurosport??? Next one to cancel will be London Jungyo. Who needs this anymore then? Why not closing the Kokugikan and hold the Basho in a park? 2 more years here... then they have to kick me out of the Kokugikan...I WILL watch Sumo.... Bealzbob 0 Posted December 17, 2007 British Eurosport rarely showed the basho's and their often erratic time-keeping made it haphazard to catch it at the best of times even when they did bother showing it. So I am glad that their shoddy attempts and monopoly are now at an end. Hopefully it will now be picked up by someone who can do it properly, reliably and on time. If not, then nothing has changed at this end. Eurosport :-S
Kaiomitsuki 408 Posted December 17, 2007 (edited) Sad news (Sign of disapproval...) ... I hope it's not a decision against the Sumo from the french president, Nicolas Sarkozy !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Eurosport belong to the TF1 group (since January 2001 it has been completely owned by TF1) TF1 belong (43%) to the Bouygues group. The CEO of the Bouygues Group is Martin Bouygues and he is the "best friend" of the french president... Martin Bouygues was the wedding witness of Nicolas Sarkozy, and he is the godfather of his son, Louis. And it's not a secret that Nicolas Sarkozy hates Sumo ... Remember that in May - when he becomes the new french president - Nicolas Sarkozy cancels the French yusho prize. A little phone call to Martin and Sarkozy can certainly cancel the Sumo on Eurosport ! Someone knows if Carla Bruni likes Sumo ???? :-S It can maybe help to keep the Sumo on Eurosport (Laughing...) ilovesumo 12 Posted December 17, 2007 (edited) Yes...TF1...I forgot.... could be true what Kaiomitsuki wrote...sorry but, wouldn't that be tooooooooo childish... un petit Sitzstreik in front of TF1 building? :-S (JOKE! 冗談 fun!!!) ryafuji 811 Posted December 17, 2007 British Eurosport stopped showing sumo years ago, so doesn't make much difference to me, but it's still a shame. I can find most of the bouts on the internet I guess but it's just not the same.

I really hope so...being in the U.S. it doesn't affect me, but I'm trying to imagine what it would be like if the NSK pulled out of TV Japan in N. America. We've taken that for granted for so long, I don't think we'd know how to react...well, I guess we'd bombard the NSK's message box for starters....
