Never seen anything like that - has anything like this happened before?

Goeido collected himelf quickly...wonder if we'd have the same result had this incident not happened. B-)

Just watching the news with my wife in our hotel room, and she said that the brief report stated that it was a woman trying to get onto the dohyo.

Yes, it was a woman who came down the stairs with a large pile of white papers. The usher (tiny middle-aged lady) was unable to stop her and she began to climb onto the dohyo just as Goeido and Takekaze were completing their last preparations. That's when Nishikido Oyakata and Takamisakari jumped up to grab her. Finally, a yobidashi was summoned to escort her back down the hanamichi.

The 'happening' was enough to make both rikishi turn around and they had to resettle their breathing before the match.

I've never really thought about it before, but I guess there is almost no police presence within the K'kan.

Let this be a lesson for Asashoryu: If you're going to pretend to be crazy you really have to go all out. Ganbatte!

So a woman actually made it onto the dohyo?? Wake the pets and call the neighbors, history has been made!

The woman is a hard core fan, we watched her several times with all these papers and signatures. I don't know who was the subject of her longing, Goeido or Takamisakari. She touched or contacted the dohyo at least with her clothes and when they jumped on her she almost fell on it. The poor woman looked totally deranged and in mental disorder - more than any Yokozuna.

Something similar happened in the morning, a woman wanted to pass the dohyo very near by, so she almost touched it. But the yobidashi were there. Thank God not one of these stupid foreigners.

I hope the woman is looked after ok.

out of curiousity what would they do if a little girl (let's say a 6 year old) got on to the dohyo?

Did she touch the dohyo? If so it should have been destroyed and rebuilt as it would be impure.

She didn't have a chance to stand on it, but she definitely touched it with her hands.

Poor thing! (Not a nice experience for the rikishi either, of course.)

I thought maybe it was some political stunt...so, what happens next? Will they actually have to rebuild the dohyo?

She was headed straight for Goeido. Takamisakari was only ringside at the time.

There's absolutely no way they could rebuild the dohyo in time to continue the honbasho. If she really touched the dohyo, and it's viewed as blaspheming sacred ground, it seems a reconsecration would be the simplest solution.

Maybe she's collecting signatures to enable women to climb the dohyo? You know, an activist? A feminist activist? Or maybe a hardcore fan who wants to change the tradition? Or a Hakuhou fan who did not want Goueidou in the race? Lucy?

I think she just wanted to show Goeido her chanko recipe collection.

Or maybe she found the secret of the magic hair-oil and was about to announce it to the world when Takamisakari jumped her to maintain the conspiracy.

(Shaking head...)

Where is Alanis Morrisette when you need her?

this was of course irony, you always seem to have difficulties with it

Maybe they could just scrape off the dirty bits. (Insert ironic foreigner emoticon here.)

On a related note I was told another one of these "special" fans was thrown out of keiko in Kokonoe this week for talking loudly to himself and yawning.

That was Asashoryu!

Actually, this is not as silly as it seems. When a rikishi bleeds on the clay practice dohyo (which is not raised but is a dirt floor) they purify with salt and scrape or dig out the offending area. They could do the same with the bits the woman got on and then through salt around liberally.

I'd be interested to see if anything is mentioned in Rikishi Talk, from kyokai members, or in the Japanese newspapers about this.

I'm sorry. I know I shouldn't type what I'm going to but it's just too funny to pass up.

Your sentence wasn't irony, it was sarcasm.

But when you told me I always had trouble with irony that wasn't actually irony.............well that was ironic.

Looks like we don't need Alanis after all. We have our own.

You don't need to tell me if I mean a sentence ironic or sarcastic.

But obviously you seem to have a little problem with me in the last time. I can't imagine what I did wrong to cause this, but take my apology for everything I might have said or done.

Hmmm...

I seem to remember someone from the forum reported some time ago that early in the morning before the jonokuchi bouts a couple of old ladies were sitting on the dohyo like nobody's business causing passing yobidashi to nearly have a heart attack.. But the search turned up nothing.. :(

Never seen anything like that - has anything like this happened before?

When I watch the NSK DVD collection, I remember an old fight where a drunk man came running up the dohyo and hit the back of the winner because he was not happy that his favourite rikishi lost.

I find this fight and download it on youtube

It was Ozeki Wakahaguro vs. Yokozuna Wakanohana I

Kyushu 1959 14th day

12th win for the Ozeki... who will win the Yusho after his senshuraku fight...

At the end of the fight we can see the drunk man on the dohyo (Shaking head...)

Did Wakahaguro even notice that guy who was pushing him?

Takekaze: "What the hell what that all about?... It's our livelihood, you know."

The last time something like this happened, according to Jiji Press, was in Kyushu in 1991, when a drunk got in on the act but was put firmly in his place by Kyokudozan.

Jiji also says that the women was escorted out of the k'kan by oyakata on security patrol and handed over to PC Plod.
