Sumo Reference Updates

Don't use the "makuuchi division" restriction if you want results from outside makuuchi to be included...

The Toku in Tokunomusashi is the same as Tokushoryu ().

The maezumo Yoshino has a variant of his "yoshi" kanji where the top is not a "shi" (person) but is a Tsuchi (ground) The forum wont let me actually post the new character...

As you may have seen these variants on the screen, or in the official yearbooks, I suggest making the changes (whenever possible) to the sumo reference site.  I know that the NHK is not the most rapid or consistent with their use on its own webpage, but other official documents seem to show these variants are the true shikona or proper names of the rikishi.

Is there any way to sort the query by age? Etc. Search fot youngest rikishis to achieve division debut?

Yoshii Ko may be one of the youngest to get to makushita in May. He will be 16 years and 9 months old.

"Age" is not an item in the database as it is relative. Only Birth Date is.

Also Yoshimura from Dewanoumi has the same Yoshi variant.

What resource is the sumo reference using when determining what shikona kanji to record?  The NHK website?  That differs from the on-screen kanji shown in official broadcasts and in the official rikishi dictionaries.  The NHK site seems limited in what it presents - likely due to formatting and not the ability to use the kanji variants.  For instance, they still use the hiragana for the "hari" in Kitaharima, the "tsuru" in Tsurubayashi, the former Yotsukasa had his "Yo" in hiragana, etc.  Could we switch from the limited NHK site?

Shishi's rank and record for 2020.01 ought to be Mz 0-0-5 as customary for the delayed foreign deshi, not Bg 0-0.

And on a more random note: The basho location for 1927.03 currently reads "Tokyo, Osaka Uehon-machi Roku-chome", but the Tokyo part clearly shouldn't be there.

In bout query, in Shusshin, Georgia, Mutsu, and Osaka appear twice. Also Philippines is written as Phillipines.

Something funky is going on with this rikishi's profile when it's among the search results on Rikishi.aspx - he shows up twice in a hatsu-dohyo search and four times in an intai date search. He seems to go from double to quadruple on his shikona change (Kyushu 2015 x2Hatsu 2016 x4), but I guess that's just a symptom of the real problem.

Hmm, looking a bit closer it appears that a whole bunch of Kyushu 2019 retirees are affected like that: query. 12 excess entries there via four rikishi getting three extras each.

Well, a LOT of readings without this sign are uncomfirmed as well. But in these cases there are other plausible readings, making it particularly unsure.

How about the retired Toyonoshima? There is only one intai on the page at the moment: Sokokurai.

While checking the kabu of Kitanofuji (Izutsu-Kokonoe-Jinmaku) and his Izutsu-beya, I noticed that 2 rikishi of Kimigahama-beya (which changed to the well known Izutsu-beya later) are listed as just from Kimigahama-beya, though when they started in sumo, the heya had not branched out from the old Izutsu-beya yet. http://sumodb.sumogames.de/Kabu.aspx?kabu=35

Correct Izutsu->Kimigahama: Shirafuji and Fuji

Only Kimigahama: Taiga and Haji - Taiga was makuuchi Nishikinada when he changed from Izutsu to Kimigahama

From Hayato onwards, ex-Tsurugamine had branched out.

The old Izutsu-beya changed to Michinoku-beya later, Kitanofuji branched out of Kokonoe to form a new Izutsu-beya, which merged back into Kokonoe-beya, and Kimigahama-beya became Izutsu-beya.

THE hansoku loss from day 7 Natsu 20 years ago, after 83 years again: losing the loose mawashi means losing the bout - article 16 of bout regulations. forums search= Asanokiri was the one to show his private parts in a bout against Chiyohakuho.

The video linked in the database is NOT from that bout: http://sumodb.sumogames.de/Rikishi_basho.aspx?r=485&b=200005

A few finds that still are the same

article on Kaizen for his sumo debut.
He is from university sumo, so that should be added to database: from the Asahi university sumo club, like Tokushinho, and graduated in March from the law department. The ceremony was at the Asahi-dai Mizuho-city campus and he got the university president award, for boosting the prestige of the university by entering ozumo.

Last year at the meeting to support the rikishi from Asahi-dai http://www.asahi-u.ac.jp/topics/2019/3710/

Koni-chan has his proper shikona as real name now wiki/小錦八十吉_(6代), he had that of his first wife at first, which the database still lists - and hasn't added the present real name http://sumodb.sumogames.de/Rikishi.aspx?r=1287

Kotoasaki

His real name is given in the old Hochi article (still there) as Kakuta (also on the National Diet Library page for his book), not Tsunoda, wikipedia gives his first shikona also as Kakuta and Kotokakuta, not Kadota and then Kotokadota - Sadogatake-beya standard for the first shikona is Koto- with the real name. https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/琴旭基太造

That real name is different now anyway - he took on the name of his rich wife, Yokose 横瀬

Ozeki Tachihikari is listed as only being a member of Takasago beya when in fact he started out in Tomozuna under the wing of Yokozuna Tachiyama, and only got transferred to Takasago when Tachiyama abruptly left sumo in May 1919.

There happen to be dangerous kanji for the DB search: I wanted to find * - Unicode U+40D4 - and my browser froze - all 21156 lines were displayed, same as with just *

I don't like the search feature which displays a rikishi page at once if there is only 1 find, because

  1. I then still have to use a result page to get to the proper page URL for the rikishi
  2. many rikishi of the older past are not in the DB and the search would open the page of a recent rikishi with the same name, instead of the result page. There I could and can see with multiple finds, at once both when the time is not right and that the shikona was in use

Yoshizawa is missing from the search result list of Nakagawa-beya rikishi for (this) the Natsu basho http://sumodb.sumogames.de/Rikishi.aspx?shikona=&heya=54&shusshin=-1&b=202005&high=-1&hd=-1&entry=-1&intai=-1&sort=6

Search without basho limitation lists both brothers http://sumodb.sumogames.de/Rikishi.aspx?shikona=Yoshizawa&heya=54&shusshin=-1&b=-1&high=-1&hd=-1&entry=-1&intai=-1&sort=6

Funny, I had them, but they disappeared when I reloaded the page - a switch from May basho banzuke to July basho? - where the ranks are now the same and no longer new high
